Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

Weird question about the ModBot giveaways.. I'm in the US. When I try to redeem the code for the game that I won, it says it's not available for purchase in "this country". Anyone run into that?

Picked up surprsingly more games this sale than I expected:

Glittermitten Grove. Simply amazing. Not on sale as it just came out. I got my money's worth out of this. Played it to completion (I think?) right after I got it (~8 hours). Quite entertaining. Absolutely recommended. The management sim is much deeper than you expect.

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt GOTY Edition. I couldn't pass this up either. I barely have the HDD space to install it, but am excited to dive in for the next several weeks. Everything I have heard is amazing.

Anyone know if Assassin's Creed Rogue runs well on PC?

It does, but there is a 60fps cap:

You played the actual game or the other game?

Zero problems finishing the game with a 970. Keep in mind the game just redeems to a uplay key and you need uplay installed to run the game.

I'm a huge AC fan and thought the game was just kinda meh, I'd recommend only playing it if you have finished every other AC game. You should definitely play AC2, AC4, and Syndicate before you play Rogue imo as those are better games story/mechanics wise. Rogue is built on top of AC3 engine (maybe AC4) I believe but uses a lot of ideas from AC4. Also the ubi store has a deal where you can get Rogue, Black Flag, and Liberation for $20 total. They also have other bundles like Syndicate+Unity or EVERY AC game for like $110 (seems expensive).

This is the only steam sale to date where I have yet to buy a single game :( I guess my library is mostly complete.

Has anyone purchased Geometry Dash only for it to not even work? Pressing play quickly flashing a box for a second, closes, and nothing happens. I see a lot of posts about it in their forum and no real solution. Lucky it was cheap but still disappointing...

just about ready to quit this new shantae game. the platforming is extremely frustrating and the lack of saves/meaningful checkpoints is pissing me off.

What's your thought about Liberation? I forgot that it got a PC port.

Heck, it's been a while since I've made significant Steam library additions, but I think the time off has just given me a lot of stuff to buy this time around. I had 65 wishlisted games when the sale started, now I have 27 (partly due to purchases, partly from weeding out a few titles I decided to do without). I also picked up a few things that were highlighted in the Hidden Gems thread.

That 52 game thread broke me, im long past the 52 games but now I dont want to play any new ones until 2017.

When I finished Assault Android Cactus the other day I actually thought to myself "aw man should have saved it for 2017"

Guess its more Paint it Back until then, that shit wont be over for weeks with the amount of content it has.

Stupid made up arbitrary goals >_<

For some reason, this turned into a big sidescrolling binge for me. All three Shantae games, Wings of Vi, Momodora, and Jumpjet Rex. Also got ABZU, Contraption Maker, and Space Moth DX and Gungeon were gifted to me from friends. Most being games I wanna play to completion!

I think it's pretty clear that the first step to obtaining actual information in an online discussion is to not put off your audience immediately with a broad strokes statement about how they're probably all wrong anyway.

Gaf told me that they don't really care much about what people say online so they probably won't feel put off. Besides it's the usual video game snark.

How is the first one? Never heard of it before, I've only played diner dash and overcooked, this does look fun though.

Really good. Only gripe is that it feels a bit more like playing piano with a keyboard but otherwise it's a great great puzzle/management hybrid.

Did you want people to lie to you and say that they thought Child of Light was bad? That's not how recommendation and preferences work.

I was going in blind!

Huh, so you wanted us to validate your bad taste? Good to know, I'll ignore your questions in the future :P

(just kidding, I won't ignore you for disliking good games)

I bought it for the art style. I ended up loving it for everything else, plus the art style. It shouted "great game" to me and was even better.

I guess it's a good artpiece and storytelling, but gameplay really bogged me down. I actually thought it would have been better if it was a full-on sidescroller platformer than an RPG.

I put Ori as number one this year.

It's a God tier game. And is in my top 3 GOAT.

And this is coming from a casual non-metroidvania gamer.

Just trust me. You will love it.
I bought Ori due to literally everyone saying it was the second coming of video game platformers. I will say after beating it and unlocking everything that it's a solid platformer with hit detection issues and "cheap" difficulty added in.

People will say that it's not meant to be "easy." I agree, some parts are done well and you definitely feel like "yeah, I died and it was definitely my fault," but there were numerous instances where unless you knew exactly what was happening and what would come up, there's no way you'll catch it unless you have some seriously good reflexes. The controls and jumping can also be a bit finicky at times, but I would say the majority of the time it controls well enough.

It's not a bad game, I still would recommend people to play it because the art design is absolutely mesmerizing, but definitely don't go in thinking it's as amazing as people hype it up to be. It has its flaws.
Metroidvania defines the structure of the game, not the main gameplay mechanics. The structure could be summed up as "traversing huge interconnected worlds with relative freedom and possible sequence-breaking, having to backtrack and unlock new areas and items with new powers"

The gameplay mechanics and the genre change accordingly; all of these are "metroidvania" games as far as structure goes, but with different twists:

- Outland: action platformer (with a sprinkle of bullet hell)
- Guacamelee: beat 'em up / platformer
- Metroid: shoot 'em up / platformer
- Metroid Prime: fps
- Castlevania: hack 'n' slash / rpg
- Infinitely Twisted Shadow Planet: arcade flying / shooter
- Kirby and the Amazing Mirror: puzzle platformer / action platformer
- Ori: platformer

As for your original question about Ori, it's worth the price and it's several leagues above Outland (which is kind of an average game), in both artistic and design choices. Hope that can help.

All right, I'll keep Ori in mind when I couldn't find anything else for my spare money.

With that said, I don't think you backtrack in Outland.

That's a challenge I will never be able to complete. I find 4-5 games per year that I get absorbed by, then drop the rest that don't absolutely engross me.

I'm with ya. Kinda putting off shorter games and just working my way through Hitman until the new thread goes up.

I felt the same way. After finishing a play through I thought it was very cool seeing how my choices measured up against other players.
I enjoyed it, particularly the dialogue and early part where the mystery was still mysterious. As the game neared the end I wasn't especially interested but finished it up anyway.

Streaming from PC to a 60" TV, it was difficult to see what the face icons were. I presume they were happy/sad when the relationships improved or deteriorated, but I couldn't make it out (if it had a green arrow pointing up, and a red one down that would've been much clearer).

If it'd kept up that mystery and my subsequent interest, then I'd say it was one of my favourites of the year. As it stands, it's just middling to me. Worth a play through, but I feel no need to ever return. I also felt the voice acting wasn't very convincing.

Looks like GTAV has passed 6 million owners according to Steamspy. I wonder how much more they sold via their Social Club thing. Either way what a monster of a game for R* and it was like 2 years late coming to PC. Such a beast.

im saying Sattelite Reign and Grim Dawn are most likely to not show up in bundles anytime soon.

If you want my actual recomendation, its Darkest Dungeon since its near the top of my games of the year. I dont like Grim Dawn, and I havent played Sattelite Reign yet, And I havent bought Invisible Inc because, like I said, im sure it will be in a humble monthly soon enough.

This is a late reply, but thanks for the info! I went ahead and bought Darkest Dungeon due to your recommendation. That and the Giant Bomb quick look for the game persuaded me.

And yet RDR2...

I posted like 2 years ago about waiting for GTAV to hit $15 before I buy it

Still holding strong

and probably will be 60 years from now

It starts off VERY strong and then kind of trails off, feels unfinished almost. It breaks a lot of interesting ground - you play as a woman, black, you deal with slavery and racism quite a bit, it has a more focused templar vs assassin story - but again its one of those games where the first half is much better than the second half. The setting is great though, takes place in New Orleans and I believe the timeline is between AC3 and AC4. I played it on PC and never noticed any port issues, since the original was on Vita but they upscaled the textures for PC.

I'm currently replaying AC2 on my console (Ezio collection) and to me its still AC2 (+revelations/brotherhood) and AC4 are the "must play" games of the series, with Syndicate, 3, Unity, Rogue, and 1 all sort of lesser and only worth a spin if you really enjoyed 2 and 4.

Its passed over 70m copies total sold worldwide on all platforms so its definitely a beast, the only ones ahead of I believe are Tetris, Minecraft, and Wii Sports. I triple dipped and have bought over 15 copies of the game to give out as gifts, it was $24 for consoles during the holiday sales. The fantastic thing is that the GTA 5 Online system lets you import your character from console to PC and vica versa, any time you want, so you can progress on one system and then move it over if you want.

Oxenfree was great, good writing, good voice work, great story, A+ atmosphere, didn't last too long and a decent amount of clever twists. My only complaint was that
there's little reason to replay the game aside from very, very tiny story scraps
.

For a night on the couch with my SO, it was a great experience.

So you guys suggested to me N++ after I asked for local coop suggestions. Holy shit this game can be tough. My brother and I are only in "intro"! Wth! It's very fun but I'm afraid that my brother of 8 years won't be able to complete most of these missions. I like the game though it's very fun. It sucks that coop is a little harder.

I'm stuck on that one level where there's a ghost of your character and it does what you did but it kills you if you don't avoid it. I'm my own worst enemy.

GTAV in first person with gyro steering / aiming is the best thing right now. I'm enjoying myself way too much.

Was really excited for the nameless king fight in Dark Souls 3 and then the dude I summoned 1 hit the first phrase and the second stage was over in 30 seconds lol. I should completely solo first playthoughs.

You really should. Tried a summon once, feels like cheating. I didn't do anything and win. Never again.

Actually the best thing is to not be able to afford new games - this sale I haven't gotten anything, and I'm 'having' to play my backlog.

Definitely more enjoyable to play games than worry if I should get a deal now or in the future, or if I should stay current with games or play my older ones, or if I should buy games that are popular right now and all the gaffers are playing.

Not saying it's ideal, but whatever - not as annoyed right now at not being able to buy games...probably my first Steam sale without a buy.

What profile are you using?

I made my own, it's based on a regular 360 config. I'm currently using a mod to give the game native steam controller support, so it switches when i'm on foot, or in a vehicle. I'm still trying to figure out how best to handle Gyro Steering, but this is what I've got so far: http://i.imgur.com/RsJqhKw.png - it feels really good to me.

For Aiming, I have the right pad set to Mouse-Like Joystick (with sensitivity pushed a bit high in the game), and it switches to Mouse when I pull on the left trigger (Mode Shifting option in the Touchpad editor). Gyro is also enabled when I pull on the left trigger.

If you aren't interested in modding it, you can just set a button that switches between action sets. If you run into any troubles just let me know.

He's using the "I still havent bought Melty Blood because im a cheap bastard" profile.

Cool, I'll try this later. Thanks!

Just got a hot new game, wonder how the multiplayer community is...

It says Powered by GameSpy on the box. You know that's the good stuff.
