Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

Stardew won't be a drag like Harvest Moon right? Like there's less waiting time, and you aren't punished for taking your time? I hear the cave section is tacked on though.

I mean, would it be more like Rune Factory?

It really depends on if you're trying to min/max your farm. There are mistakes that you can make in your first year that aren't "ideal." FYI, if that's an issue for you.

There's also a time mechanic. At first, there are a lot of things that you want to do that you can't because there are things you have to do. But as you expand, upgrade, get better, etc. you start to find more time.

That's the only part that isn't real life to me. No matter how far I expand or upgrade, I can never find the fucking time to do the stuff I want to do because of the shit I have to do. #lifesux

So is there any RPG on Steam that has combat on the level of Dark Souls 3 or Dragon's Dogma? Or have I reached the peak?

None on Steam as far as I know, those 2 seem like the candidates that hold the candle here at the moment.

Did everyone else play Sleeping Dogs DE without the steam overlay ? Doesn't seem to work for me. Sucks for achievement popups.

EDIT: Fixed it by closing MSI Afterburner

Amongst the games on my Steam wishlist, I've been keeping an eye on Seraph, Ghost 1.0, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky and The Witness. I've heard enough overwhelming yet vague praise about The Witness that I'm eventually gonna get it and jump in blind, but can anyone recommend/try and sell me on those 3 other games?

Also, between PS4 and PC versions of The Witness, is there any reason to prefer one over the other?

Stump's reviews are always interesting. I am a bit disappointed by the last one though: you don't talk about the elephant in the room, which is the difficulty of the puzzles.

The Turing Test, Haven Moon, or the Room Two?

The Room Two: More frustrating than the Room because you're running between areas rather than being in one area, but not really difficult, especially with the hint system.

Haven Moon: Easier than Riven, harder than Myst. If you read the letters then you will at least figure out the objective of the meta-puzzle, then it's just a matter of thinking about what you have to work with. Nothing as nuts as the animal stones or fire marbles in Riven.

The Turing Test: Harder than Portal 1, but not very hard. There are maybe 4-5 puzzles and a few of the optional rooms that really give you that satisfying breakthrough that scratches your brain itch, but overall it is more like a pleasant and not super hard puzzle game. Compared to Talos Principle, way easier than the harder levels or star levels, but also 99% less padding so you probably resent it less, hahah.

Noting that I haven't played either:

Trails in the Sky is often described by people as "the only JRPG [they've] liked since the classic SNES/PS1 era". It has really stellar reviews among players and critics alike. I'm confident if you're even considering it you'll like it. In terms of criticism, I've heard two things: 1) small amounts of anime titty bullshit, 2) it's a little on the long side.

Ghost 1.0 most of the feedback I've heard is "I loved Underrail Unepic, the developer's previous game, and this is also a good game". It's weird to see people give positive feedback but also damning by faint praise. Most people seem to like the stealth and emphasize that it really really is a stealth game, not an action game.

You can change the FOV on the PC version and many people found the default FOV and movement settings nauseating. It's obviously not going to look better on the PS4 than a beefy gaming PC.

Well, fuck.

You can give Lords of the Fallen a go. It aims for that same avenue. There are no i-frames in the game, so you have to try to predict when to roll, where in Souls you have both snap reactions and timing to rely on. The result is that Lords feels, how I put this, shittier.

Personally, I didn't last long. It's definitely not bad. And it's not that bland, either. There's some cool conceptual stuff going on with the world-building. Interactions with NPCs are decent enough but lack depth.

I don't particularly recommend it, but it's also not a garbage game or anything. It might scratch an itch for a bit.

Ah cool, thanks. Was worried at the lack of news from outlets.

Ghost 1.0s dev previously made Unepic, not Underrail.

God Eater and FF IX will probably round up my haul, I really want to play both so that beats out wanting to wait for better deals, maybe by the time those better deals pop up my hard on for them will be gone. In fact I need to start buying the shit I actually want to play, and not just shit that is cheaper. I got half a mind to buy Nitroplus Blasterz which is the only anime fighter I actually really want, but 30€ is too steep. Im kicking myself for not using the skullgirls voucher on release. But buying Melty blood for half the price just because its half the price isnt eally the anwser either (im not even shitting on Melty Blood btw, I just dont want it that bad is all), I already kinda regret getting Arcana Heart.

ill save the rest for Marvel or for something that pops up after the sale in a weekend deal because they like to be sneaky like that...Ill never forget Vampire the Masquerade, those fuckers.

It's alright. Bought it for 5€ and had fun for a weekend with it.

this. Its very pretty and the gameplay is fun, just super repetitive. But those special kills never get old, and have I mentioned its very very pretty?

Its very pretty.

I know that Chinese censor skeletons and skulls, thanks to following the updates of Dota 2.

So they get a better badge than ours for Steam awards. Life is unfair.

Who would want this badge, really?

Better stop before level 10, like at levels 5, 8 or 9.

So I just finished Oxenfree and yeah, wow, that was pretty awesome. There are some bits where it does kinda feel a little tedious what with the having to go to the place to find the thing to unlock the door to go to the other place to do the other thing etc. But the story is super compelling and the way it's told in dialogue as you move along really helps to keep the game going. Plus it has one of those Telltale style "X% of players decided to do the thing/not do the thing" stats things at the end, which is cool.

Anyway it's super great and it's cheap in the sale so everyone buy it.

In terms of criticism, I've heard two things: 1) small amounts of anime titty bullshit, 2) it's a little on the long side.

Are we talking 50-ish hours like the description says? I recently clocked about 100 hours into Bravely Default and I've beaten both Persona 3 and 4 couple of times, so "long RPG" is a bit of a subjective term to me.

Oh man, it's one of those games...?
Only PC games that have ever made me feel nauseous were Stanley Parable and The Beginner's Guide. My PC's not super beefy by today's standards, but it's way above game's minimum requirements, so I guess I'll eventually get the PC version.

What..? Trails in the Sky is, notably, completely devoid of "anime titty bullshit". You may be thinking of Trails of Cold Steel, and even that has only a very small amount near the beginning.

As for length, the first game (FC) is about 30-40 hours (depending on how many sidequests you do) and the second (SC) is a little less than twice that.

They're excellent games, with very good story, characters, writing and world building and superb music.

Turing Test. Basically, what made me not buy the game was the numerous reviews on Steam stating that the game did not manage to create "ahah" moments and that all the puzzles except for the optional ones were way too easy.

Given that you play a lot of puzzle/adventure games, that's probably true. I think there are a handful of ah-hah! moments and I agree that the optional puzzles are more engaging than most of the main game ones. To me maybe a good point of comparison as to what I liked about the game is Portal 1. Portal is short, relatively easy, and greatly enhanced by its quality presentation and plot/ambiance elements. The Turing Test is somewhat short, relatively easy, and greatly enhanced by the presence of the plot and themes explored outside the main mechanics. I can't speak to how it would evaluate if it was just the puzzles presented in a drab way. I think like Portal the game is ripe for DLC or a sequel that really stretches the mechanics a little bit further or has a higher degree of difficulty.

Ghost 1.0 most of the feedback I've heard is "I loved Underrail Unepic, the developer's previous game, and this is also a good game". I remember making various posts in the July thread praising the game as I played it. My final conclusion:
I really liked it. I might have liked another zone but overall the length felt more or less right, the story was fun and it worked, complete with all the references.
With the game called Ghost 1.0 (which I interpreted as a reference to the GitS manga), I do wonder if there will be a Ghost 2.0, or a 1.5. I'd buy it.

And since I'm here talking about it, might as well share again the Steam review I wrote for it:
This is a really good game, definitely recommended to anyone looking for a short and sweet metroidvania like game.

Nice production values, good humor, a lot of references, both in narrative as well as in the game itself thanks to the geek items but, the most important aspect of it all, great gameplay.

Ghost controls really well, there are many secondary weapons to choose from and many upgrades, the skill tree has some interesting choice to make a character that fits your own play style, some rooms present light puzzles which require a little thinking as well as good execution and backtracking to get all the secrets is nice thanks to the teleport between save rooms.

On the negative side of things, I encountered a couple of weird bugs, though they were minor things and not game breaking and considering updates keep coming it can easily be overlooked.

Ghost 1.0 is a great improvement over their previous game UnEpic (fun game but with some decisions I didn't enjoy) and a strongly suggested purchase for any fan of the genre.
Hopefully there will be a Ghost 2.0, but even if there isn't I'm looking forward to @unepic_fran's next game.

I have enjoyed playing Gremlins Inc. these past days. It is a game which has been in Early Access earlier this year and has matched the Early Access price during recent sales. The game is a kind of board game with many rules which would make it hard to play outside the virtual world. Many people think the game depends too much on luck, but I would disagree so far: there are tournaments held every few months, with slightly different rules (first, choose a card among 3 at each turn, rather than get it randomly ; second, no special power for each player) and I admit I was totally crushed by my "pro" opponent during both encounters today.

Various things to be take into consideration before purchasing:
  • the game is done by Russians, so it might get removed from Steam (only half serious),
  • there is a DRM and it is always online, with servers in Amsterdam and Singapore (no problem to play in Europe).

Wait, so it uses real time?

Nah, there's a in-game clock. So you don't have to wait whole seasons to move into spring, for example.

I believe Animal Crossing went off of your actual season, if I'm not mistaken? Assuming that you didn't mess with your DS's clock. It's not like that or anything.

Any games with campaign coop on a decent sale that you guys enjoyed? Looking for something to play with my brother after we wrap up our current game. Genre doesn't really matter.

Also what's the price history of the sale cards? Do they hit as low as 5cts towards the end? Kinda want that lvl 10 badge

Couple more games, forgot to include them earlier. Enjoy!

Been a good sale. Actually bought quite a bit (for me). Liked the daily votes and looking forward to the results. Miss the frenzy of the dailies, etc., but older/more busy me doesn't mind so much. (^_^)

Guys, should I buy Pathologic HD or its better to wait for the Remake?
Pathologic made a lengthy post explaining why it won't be a remake(different dialogue, quests, mechanics, etc) and how it'll be a very different game so I'd play the original if you're looking to experience one of the more unique titles of the medium.

I see the wizardry 6,7,8 bundle. I heard good things about the series. Are they all worth playing or just one of them? I heard saves transfer, is that true?

so whos the resident god eater expert that we annoy when we boot up the game and go "the fuck is going on?"

Dead Rising 3 is at a solid price. I just can't help but feel it's going to be in a $15 humble bundle sometime in the future.

I read that but my fear is that, I asume the remake will be the definitive experience, and I expect that by playing the HD version before I may get spoiled the story, plot twists, ending, etc. I would preffer to play it without any prior knowledge but I'm not sure how long the development of the remake will take.
