Final Fantasy XV SPOILER THREAD

Gladio turned into a nutbag after sea monster, though. I understand that he was trying to keep Noctis focused on the mission and whatever, but A) I was playing Noctis and was focused on the mission, so there was a huge disconnect, and B) I don't really remember any cutscenes or lines of dialog from Noctis before that where he really wavered in an appreciable manner that necessitated a bunch of yelling and snide comments.

After several of Gladio's "Maybe you could try to think of others for a change." (Don't know exactly what he said anymore) I literally screamed at the TV, lol. I did wait for Ignis, but sometimes I had to lead the way. In this chapter I really came to hate Gladio.

Prompto is by far the best bro, yes. And Gladio by far the worst. He got really annoying in the later chapters. He also has a mullet and mullets are disgusting. The best part of the game was when he left and Aranea joined the party, if only it stayed like that for the rest of the game.

Didnt realize this was a FF XIII spoiler thread, I was planning on finally beating that game soon :|

Oh shit. I'm sorry, I guess there is no point in spoiler tagging it now. =(

The game is missing vital stuff in its current state....

But imagine if this game had released in an EARLIER state when Uncovered Final Fantasy pretended it was ready for release?

Let that sink in.

Dude is a fucking asshole, he immediately starts chastising and riding Noctis' ass right after Luna's death. For fucks sake, chill bro and let the man have some time to grieve for two second. Selfish asshole.

Gladio giving you shit shows he a hypocrite when he buggers off for a while and doesn't tell you why (yeah dlc i know) yet rants at noctis none stop after chapter 9

It was so satisfying in a somber way finally watching Noctis grieve like he needed to after you "kill" Ardyn in the train. I was like "yeah he's crying. Fuck you Gladio."

Pretty sure the cut scene says like 3 weeks later. I don't recall immediately after before the train but the train one has some time in between it and the death.

He gave him "several weeks" to get over it. Don't really understand the hate for Gladio. He only snapped at noctis twice and both times were necessary. Nobody else in the group would do it so he had to.

And oh, it said 'several', not 3? I don't know why I thought 3. Noct had to get it together.

Agree with this.

Gladio's character assassination was quite bizarre. I thought all four characters were rather likable to some degree but I couldn't stand him after Leviathan. He was fine at the end of the game which makes his weird asshole phase even more out of place. I didn't mind the talk on the train and it's justifiable to some degree, but his behavior in the following dungeon was really annoying.

I really hated the jump scares in chapter 13. Not only do I hate horror elements, but the game kept throwing them at me to the point where it was annoying. I think the game is really flawed, but I still enjoyed my time with it. Even though the afterlife cutscene was kinda cheesy and unnecessary, the whole logo reveal/change is something that still sticks in my mind, so I guess it was worth it for that.

I know there was some discussion earlier, but this is probably the first FF game where the all the ages of the characters make sense. Cor is 45, which makes sense because he was a member of Regis's group when they had their adventure (which would be a good story to tell), Aranea being 30 was really cool because it's the first time a military personnel of her type and career has had a realistic time-frame (her days as a mercenary leader starting at 20 and spent 10 years rising to prominence, as opposed to Celes already being a general at 18).

Some people were shocked by Iris being 15, but I don't know why. She looked and acted like she was a teenager and having a crush on her brother's handsome prince friend is something a teenage would do. The fact that her and Noctis were still chummy was that they've known each other since they were children.

Luna being 24 is cool and I think this is the first JRPG since Drakengard 2 where the protagonist was in love with a woman who was significantly (by JRPG standards) older, with Nowe being 18 and Manah being 24.

It's Gladio's job to be an asshole because someone has to. I still like him as a character as well as the one party member I didn't have to worry about in combat.

I thought it was cool that Luna had several years on Noct. That was kinda a weird (but pleasant) surprise. Most games have the heroine as the same age or younger. Still hoping they add in Luna content either through patch or dlc...

Gladio snapped at Noctis because Noctis was grieving over a dead person while his friend (Ignis) was still alive and suffering. Gladio is sympathetic to Noct, but he's also sympathetic to the rest of the "family." I can't really be mad at Gladio for that. It was refreshing to see Gladio care about other members of the group. Previously he had acted as Noct's guardian, but now he was protecting other vulnerable members of the group.

It's easy to take Noct's side, though. The Brotherhood anime depicts Noct as a loner of sorts. People found him intriguing ("Royalty!") but he spent his free time lost in thought, chilling by himself in back alleys, etc. Luna appears to be the only girl he let get close to him in any way, and even then that was only via letter correspondence. He's the sensitive sort, not one to chase tail, so when he loses the one chick that's ever caught his interest, at the moment he's finally reunited with her... It's rough.

So basically: I sympathize with Gladio, and I sympathize with Noct. The whole train scene in Ch. 10 is one of the best in the game, IMO.

Where did you see their ages? The guide I'm guessing? How old are the bros? Cindy? I assumed Noctis was at most 22 and at least 20. Iris being only 15 is surprising. I thought she was only like a couple of years younger than Noctis. No wonder he seems so incredibly annoyed during their "date."

The bad thing is that it just says 3 weeks and we don't know the details like many of the stupid off screen bullshite in the game.

Gladiolus was kind of an ass but I wouldn't hold that as a flaw against the writing. Hell, his brotherhood episode was all about that. Part of his character is just that he has trouble with people not living up to his standards. He got over it, but the crippling of one of, possibly his best, friends and general shittyness of the events in Altissia brought it back. When he looked at Noct, he started seeing that same whiny brat he used to see. Noct was obviously grieving over Luna, but he didn't seem to care too much about Iggy from an outside perspective. Gladio saw himself as dealing with everything correctly, and unfairly demands that Noct does so too.

One of the things I loved about the mine was that whilst Gladio is the one demanding you slow down for Iggy, Prompto is the one who's actually helping Iggy back up when he falls.

I actually think this is one case where "it happened offscreen" works. You know it's been nearly a month, but the pain is just as real and raw for Noctis as ever. That's an elegant way of showing how hard he's taken this.

It's just tough love. Not something I prescribe for everyone, since everyone is different emotionally and some people are more harmed by it than helped. But Gladio meant well. He was trying to get Noctis to think about people other than himself. They couldn't change the fact Luna died, but they could do more to help Ignis who was still with them.

One of the things I loved about the mine was that whilst Gladio is the one demanding you slow down for Iggy, Prompto is the one who's actually helping Iggy back up when he falls.
Yeah, both of them were trying to help Ignis, and I love that. Really builds the bonds between the bros.

Yay, getting FFXV LE OST soon. :3 It couldn't evade the clutches of customs so had to pay 19€ of taxes, but at least it has arrived to Finnorando and is on its way to me now.

I hope to find some hidden gems I've never even heard so far and find better appreciation of some tracks I did hear but couldn't appreciate due to them being cut short (exploration themes) or them being drowned out in chaos/me being focused on what was happening on screen.

I noticed that too. Gladio was chastising Noctis about Ignis and being an asshole in general but poor little Prompto with his scrawny arms had to carry Ignis through the dungeon. Now I dislike that mullet even more lol.

.

It just hit me, all 3 supporting members were hit/hurt in the way that they supported Noctis. Ignis always watched out for him and went blind, needing people to look out for him.

Gladio was a bodyguard who, out on his own needed guarding.

Prompto was just a best friend, who was struck by his best friend and left all alone.

Deep...thoughts...:)

I think Ignis being wounded is the most I've cared about a videogame character, like, ever. Like I actively wanted to protect him. I actually walked through Ch. 10 just because I didn't want to leave him behind.

I posted this a few pages back - Im reposting it because I really want to hear some opinions on this:

There's also Arrested Development-level references to Ignis's vision throughout the game, talking about how he needs his glass for things to be "crystal clear" and is always the one to note how poor visibility is at night/in dungeons, with Noct responding "then clean your glasses".

I tried that too, but Gladio didn't shut the fuck up with his sarcastic ''Don't wait for us, huh?'' BS, so I just went on. D:

I thought that was a nice twist but him developing Daredevil like skills in a few weeks somewhat diminished the effect of that happening.

One of the most touching moments in the game is this exchange that can happen randomly while walking around Insomnia in Ch. 14:

(Note: I'm paraphrasing this)

Noctis: "Hey Specks... Can you see any light at all?"

Ignis: "A little, yes."

Noctis: "So you'll know when it's dawn?"

Ignis: "Yes, I should."

Noctis: "......Good."

Noctis knows he's going to die, but hearing that his friend Ignis will see the return of daylight gives him comfort. Noctis is living for others, not himself. That's the truest expression of love.

I noticed this too. Great foreshadowing.

For me it said several. Idk if they've changed this in patches or if it's different in other languages.

I have a soft spot for Ignis because he's just like me in real life. My girlfriend pretty much agreed with me too.

That being said, it was sort of depressing to see Ignis get blinded as I have degenerative eyesight myself. I hope that when (not if) I get to that point, I can be as bad ass as he was post-time skip.

I also liked how they handled Prompto wanting to feel accepted (i.e. the motel scene, the MT scene). Yes, more exposition on the whole MT angle would have been appreciated, but the takeaway is the same: Noctis doesn't care about Prompto's social standing, origins, what he's done or hasn't done. He just loves him for who he is at heart. They all do. There's no need for chest-beating alpha male fakery. They're just four friends who truly value each other.

Honestly Iggy's blindness is probably my favourite aspect of the story. Dude just gets fucked up, but he keeps fighting, thanks to the rest of the gang supporting him. It really feels earned, since they spend so long on how it not only changes him, but how it doesn't. It's a much subtler change than say killing a party member, but I hope it'll be remembered as a great example of party members changing as the story goes on.

And god yeah, that will you see the dawn conversation felt real good. It gave the scene where light breaks through even more kick. That's the sign of great characterisation and development.

They were a little hamfisted with it, like the car conversation when they're like "Hey you don't even need your glasses, do you?" "No, but I'm such a trope that I need SSS-rank vision to notice every detail of everything, or my name's not Scientia!"

At that point everyone should have noted "this guy is losing his eyes".

It's interesting that if we go off brotherhood Prompto is the only one who was noctis' friend before the game. Ignis was the butler and gladio was the hard ass instructor.

Thats super touching. And that mustve been an optional conversation because I missed it. And i fucked around a lot in Insomnia filling the whole damn map by walking all over it so I guess its a very random throwaway conversation but I loved it.

They were all friends before the game, but yes, Prompto is the only friend who came about the old-fashioned way. Just someone Noct met in his day-to-day life.

Noctis met Gladio and Ignis in more of an employer/employee situation, where they were serving him and the real family. At first, Ignis found Gladio and Ignis to be annoying, and they found him insufferably moody, but the Brotherhood anime does a great job showing how they came to empathize with each other.

By the time FFXV starts, they're all the best of friends.

So if Prompto is an MT and also the biological son of Verstael, s the implication that he was a victim of his dad's sick experimentations or? I'm kinda lost on that thread.

To Hell with Gladio in the vast majority of the game.

To Hell with super dry Ignis.

Prompto is super overrated but I don't blame people clinging to him like crazy because he's the only person (or should I say MT) actually trying to get some kind of character development besides Noctis.

I still think the game has a cool suicide mission tragedy thing but the more and more I think about the writing and the characters... I get bitter.

You're in the minority. The relationship and chemistry between the 4 bros is one of the game's most lauded features. Even the harshest critics tend to agree they're likeable. I for one loved them. Gladio less but still likable enough.

You know, with the Starscourge being explained as as photosynthetic organisms that parasitize humans it comes into contact with and turning them into demons basically makes FFXV a better Parasite Eve game than 3rd Birthday.

Ignis reminded me of a super chill version of Gremio from Suikoden.

I loved him even if he was a little blah until he lost his eyes.

I've played through and finished every mainline FF game (barring XI and XVI) and I have to say the final campfire scene where Noctis tells his friends "You guys are the best" has to be the best scene in ANY FF title.

This may be a true but it is a very, very low bar to hurdle.

So if Prompto is an MT and also the biological son of Versatel, is the implication that he was a victim of his dad's sick experimentations or? I'm kinda lost on that thread.
Must be. Could also explain why Prompto was able to escape, it's likely the dude got special treatment.

I still can't decide whether I like the MT stuff or not, regardless of it's terrible exposition. On the one hand it fits well with his backstory and issues, but on the other it kinda undermines Prompto's role as the everyman.

Do we know if it'll be expanded upon in the dlc?

Yeah, it's well worth taking your time in each chapter because there are many conversations that seem to trigger at random but deliver great character-building.

I just wish more was done to develop why Noctis cares about Luna. It's pretty clear she's the only girl he's ever pursued romantically. The game makes it clear that his love for her is genuine. But I'd like to see the reasons why he loves her. They clicked well as kids and kept each other in the loop via letters (presumably because cell phone communications between Insomnia and Gralea could be detected). But let's see more of what's in those letters.

I definitely get the sense that for all his attempts to look "cool," Noctis is a super-sensitive dude who deeply admires Luna's goodness and has her on a pedestal in his mind. She's his constant, a symbol of all that's well in the world. But I'd like to see more of the chemistry they share.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: One of the best things they could add would be "letters from Luna" that Umbra delivers to you, once per chapter, for the first nine chapters of the game. These would be detailed full-length letters, fully voiced by Luna; and there could be full-length responses, fully voiced by Noctis. They could be accompanied by cutscenes of Luna and Noctis reading, writing and reacting.

These letters, if done well, could show us the feelings they share. Noctis could get raw and real in his letters. He could talk about how he feels few other people understand him, and how only Luna seems to get him; he could grieve the death of his dad, something we don't see much of in the game; he could gush about how eager he is to see her. Luna could do the same, and we could also see a lighter side to Luna. I like in the Brotherhood anime how Luna laughs when she reads Noctis' letter about Ignis' attempts at recreating the cake he had in Tenebrae. A little levity would go a long ways toward humanizing her, since most of her screentime is spent talking about Oracle stuff.

And these letters wouldn't replace the short notebook messages already in the game. Those would just be more like text messages delivered on the road. The full-length letters would be more like the meat and potatoes of their long-distance romance. Give us some insight into how they connect in a meaningful way, despite the time and separation.

I can imagine (or hope) that Gladio only acted like that because he was also just sad, scared and desparated in this mess situation that they were in and didn't know how to proper react with his feelings, so he put all his anger towards Noct.
Nevertheless, the talks and atmosphere in C.10 felt very genuine and real to me.

Prompto was adopted when he was 1 by a family in Lucis. He was a fat lonely kid in a Lucian school before he started taking care of Luna's dog Pyrna, who wrote to him after it returned to her thanking him for taking care of it and being a good friend to Noctis. This drove Prompto to improve himself to be a worthy enough friend to Noctis by changing his diet and not skipping any days, leg or otherwise, to reach his new svelte body and be Noctis's bro when he reaches high school.

Of course, Noctis remembers him when he was a fat kid in grade school and would have been friends with him anyway.

Thats super touching. And that mustve been an optional conversation because I missed it. And i fucked around a lot in Insomnia filling the whole damn map by walking all over it so I guess its a very random throwaway conversation but I loved it.

Yeah there a few random conversations when wandering Insomnia.

There is also one about where they used to hang out and another about a place where Noctis had a part-time job.
