I mean, you don't spend almost a year and a half cancelling a game...

I'm worried about X-Box, I feel like if Scorpio won't change things significantly for them than that's it, they are out.

The AAA industry would be in big trouble if such thing happens, Sony alone can't hold AAA gaming :(

It's going to be their own fault if Scorpio doesn't do well. I don't know what reasons they had for cancelling the game after all this time besides what's already been posted about deadlines etc. However, if they can't muster up some good software to show how good Scorpio can be then that's gonna be it, they need the software to entice people to upgrade/get scorpio.

This year's E3 all eyes are gonna be on MS and what they have to show alongside with Scorpio. I hope they are just not planning on 3rd party scorpio games such as madden, fifa, and w/e else to pull the weight with scropio enhanced features. Or some quick sizzle reels with awful music in the background.

Also, it's going to be hard to get people excited about what they may have down the pipeline cause some might just say, yeah looks good but it's gonna get cancelled anyway. In any event, they are making it easy for Sony to run away with all the glory, xbox only gamers just lost another bullet in the chamber and unfortunately platinum is going to be losing developers.

Not an Arthur Gies fan, but in this case he's correct. Scalebound demoed like shit and Platinum had 4 years. At what point would it have been acceptable for MS to say 'nah, we're done here.'? How much good money after bad?

This isnt how production works. Imagine if 3/4 of those years you are meeting your publishers milestones and goals and then on the last year they just dump on you a huge pile of shit that you'll never be able to resolve? The product specifications changed, your personnel isn't ready for the task and your options are to either quit or try to bust your ass to actually finish it?

This isn't even a console A and console B issue. Publishers like EA and Bethesda have done it before.

Now that Scalebound is cancelled, I don't know if I have any confidence in a lot of their exclusive games getting released. My Xbox One is pretty much a Killer Instinct Box right now.

Whoa, didn't see that coming, this is unfortunate. While I wasn't crazy about the last footage they showed, I love most of Platinum Games work, so I was still kind of looking forward to it.

Hopefully Platinum will be able to recover from this and no one loses their jobs.

I truly hope the switch is all that it looks to be... it could help to inject some excitement and variety into gaming.

Currently, it is a PS4 kind of world, like the PS2 days... utter domination

basically anything announced from Microsoft that isn't Gears, Halo, or Forza I will be skeptical of it actually coming out going forward

it was just a tech demo BS. Probably isn't wise to think cloud computing will manifest itself like that in the final product.

Can't help but think crackdown was hidden away in hopes people forget what was demoed in 2015. Because sure as hell none of that is going to be in the game, if it even comes out that is.
Microsoft hasn't even said anything in regards to the unlimited power of the cloud in a long while, now it's all about the 6TF power of the Scorpio.

Currently, it is a PS4 kind of world, like the PS2 days...

I wish. The original Xbox was a pretty good alternative to the ps2 and had plenty interesting exclusives plus a very apparent technical advantage.

His comment about them batting a 50/50 was kinda right though and the game looked bad last e3.

I know right? Those two Scalebound E3 demos were universally panned for being dull and boring. Same goes for Fable Legends... dull uninteresting gameplay.

But I'm not letting Microsoft off the hook for this, they really need to do a better job of picking the projects they invest in and not reveal things too early.

†: Exclusive defined here as a game that is on the xbox one and no other platform, including PC

Lists are stupid in the first place, but considering MS has basically said they want to merge their Xbox and Windows Store and they aren't holding games back from the PC, this modifier serves no purpose what so ever, except to paint the MS line up in a worst light. I'm sure they didn't need help with that.

Years ago people were saying PS4/Sony was gonna die. Let's not make the same mistake with Microsoft's gaming division.

The last time Sony held absolute dominance over the gaming industry without real competition we had one of the greatest, if not the best, run of games ever on the ps2.

This weird notion that one company being inherently dominant is bad is just flat out wrong. In fact, there's a strong argument to make that for video games we would all be better off if there wasn't only one console and everyone made games for that.

Yeah, Sony was great during the PS2 era. Now look at them during the first 4 years of the PS3 era, and imagine of there was no competition.

Sony being so dominate in the PS2 era is why they were so awful as a platform holder in the first 4 years of the PS3's lifecycle.

What is the point of excluding the PC side of things when MS have clearly stated that all their first party games from now on will also be on PC.

The point that many people tried to tell these months is that there is no point to buying Xbox hardware anymore. Not having exclusives [or heck, at least some attractive new IP exclusive] can hurt Scorpio a lot.

Have I fallen through some kind of wormhole leading me to an alternate dimension where NeoGAF did NOT crucify Dennis Dyack for his 'one console future' screed?

You are in the small minority then.

Because MS can do better. And it would be nice to see more games that dont have halo, gears or forza attached to them by new studios or old ones.
i know i am in the minority, but to be fair this entire forum and all forums are the vocal minority. the 20 million people buying CoD every year could care less about the couple of hundred people on forums who hate it for example. I do like to see new games as well but i also want my halo, gears, etc as well. I can see people hating on MS for not doing more big SP games, but nobody hates sony for not doing more MP games. I play primarily MP games but i like a good SP game as well occasionally. Its a good reason I have both. MS does MP much better and Sony does SP much better. I don't see an issue with pushing your big franchises. any company would do the same. just like activation does with CoD, EA with BF, Sony with UC etc those big franchises help fund newer IPs

SSOD being just an OK game probably has something to do with it. Game got overhyped for simply being an exclusive.
I disagree but i respect your opinion. I'm primarily a MP player but this was one SP game i played start to finish and loved every minute of it. only less then a handful of titles have gotten that from me this gen. Matter of fact there isn't another SP game i spent that many hours in at all this gen. the gameplay and combat system was new and amazing. very fast paced with an emphasis on movement over cover. the comedy in it was great as well.

Look at my post above. There are parts of these games that are really good. Many people really liked QB despite its narrative shortcomings. I LOVED SUNSET OVERDRIVE and bought it within a few months of its release. But if it's down to $$$, it's hard to know if MS will try again with these games.
i understand that as well. the vocal minority yells at MS to make new IPs and when they do nobody buys them. Why fund products that don't make money? The truth is exclusives have lost all their momentum. they don't matter nearly as much as people think. the reality is no exclusive has sold more then 15% of a userbase. meanwhile games like Fifa, madden, CoD, BF, GTA, Minecraft sell much much more then that. People buying consoles really aren't doing it for exclsuives. us who do and us multi console owners like myself are the minority. realistically speaking these new IPs won't push any consoles, they only push themselves

Tweet I was referencing.

This has just made me realize I've been blocked by Arthur Gies. I've criticized Polygon on Twitter in the past (and even then just once, I checked) but I've never even interacted with the man, what.

I've just been praising Polygon's wonderful Final Fantasy 7 article too.

Anyway, I really hope that stuff isn't true. Sounds like it'd be like hell to work under those circumstances

His comment about them batting a 50/50 was kinda right though and the game looked bad last e3.

Except he said there are convenient excuses for when Platinum delivers a bad game, which there are (valid reasons, that is). He's still wrong. And maybe Scalebound looked last E3, but people were skeptical about Vanquish, MGR and W101 prior to release, and plenty other games, most notably FF15, demoed poorly at E3 as well.

So what exclusives do we have to look forward to at this point? Seriously?

Crackdown and...?

I'm seriously drawing a blank.

Although footage looked a bit boring, thetc concept (and kamiya) was one of the reasons I was excited about grabbing a Scorpio. Shit happens though.

Might grab an S instead.

I wish this was a multiplatform game. It looked really fun and not many games have dragons. Microsoft you ruined a good game with potential. It's been molyneux'd.

........because their games do sell?

Because other execs have faith in PG making a game, decide to invest money for PG to make that game and then whatever happens happens?

I mean, this is their first game that this has happened to. MS decided to no longer want to be a part of this. So they cancelled it.

That hasn't been true of Platinum in a long time.

You also don't know how many games they've worked on that have been cancelled, so you can't say this is the first game where this has happened.

That's a bummer, one of the few Xbox titles to get excited about. Things have certainly taken a turn for the worse for the platform of late

Seems like he didn't know it was being cancelled just that the devs weren't very happy. But who knows it could be false but he is not just an anon source like 4chan so it has a bit more weight.

Just going to the first page and it seems that "people in the know" are speculating that the cancellation happened last year. Yet the "man on the ground with the devs" didn't.

Seems to me that he can defend platinum without question, yet Gies in the same twitter is roundly accused of all sorts of skullduggery.

To an impartial observer, there seems to be plenty of bias everywhere....

How do you know they were meeting their milestones and reaching completion? Maybe it has been in developmental hell for awhile but it wasn't made public until now.

Honestly, what was shown of this game wasn't very good at all, so I won't mourn it if cancelled.

I hope Platinum Games can brush it off as a studio though.
