Holy shit I was right about all of this.
No, that has little to do with the extent of Gears' fall.
The money will be going to more halo and forza. Isn't that enough?!
It isnt a flop. Hes pulling stuff out of his ass
Yes, Platinum has a 50/50 strike rate with the quality of their games.
We should look at NIER Automata to see the type of quality we can expect of a Platinum open world game. While Kamiya's known for making high quality games, isn't Scalebound on a much larger scale than anything he's previously done? Isn't it also done that Platinum is inexperienced or poorly structured for open world content tourism type stuff?
Playing devil's advocate here.
Rime? Stig's new IP at Santa Monica?
Maybe consider that MS presents a contract where they say they can introduce new milestones, then introduce a very short term milestone with very high requirements and say that they will provide a very small budget to do so, technically the contractor agreed to that but is it really their fault at that point if requirements change unrealistically?
Microsoft did exactly that:
How A Small Studio's Chance At The Big Time Died At Microsoft's Doorstep
How in the absolute fuck can Gears of War flop? In what world are we living in? Gears was so hot once.

"I explore some of the factors that might have lead to its cancellation."
oh so he doesn't actually know
this mofo doesn't know anything
Rime is not cancelled, stigs game was never announced to the public for 3 yearsRime? Stig's new IP at Santa Monica?
The game was approved at the start of a new cycle and a different software strategy, bam! 3 years passes and the game is still far off from finishing, then management decides to look at budgets and start a new software strategy based on connectivity between W10 devices and games as services.
They can keep spending money on software they don't believe anymore, or kill it using impossible milestones to save money and focus on other kind of software.

They never canceled Rime though, just stopped their funding/support of it. The devs always stated they planned to continue on and eventually release it as a multiplat.
The game was probably just not coming together very well and after ReCore, I don't think MS wanted to have another flop on their hands.
Guys Nintendo didn't even cancel games on the friken Wii U...
Microsoft never really gave themselves a chance to expand into new ips and market them accordingly.
So sad as I was gonna buy scalebound and an Xbox One.
Because that's not how game development works? There are far more moving parts in game development and things that can go wrong or things that need more time than with something like installing a hot tub and a waterfall to someone's backyard. You can know exactly how much a hot tub costs and can make some pretty accurate estimates of what installing that hot tub costs, you can never be quite sure how much creating X amount of content with Y features costs when it comes to game development. Any publisher worth a shit should know that creating a large scale AAA open world coop action RPG from zero to completion in ~3 years is impossible, especially a new IP that has even more to figure out than existing franchises.I don't understand this comment. If i tell you to build me a pool with a waterfall and hot tub and you sign a contract, go way over budget, take twice as long, the hot tub doesn't work and the waterfall keeps breaking it's my fault for forcing you to build that stuff? In what world do we live in where "not holding up your end of the contract" in considered acceptable and we start blaming the other side? this is worse then trophies for participation, but hey that's probably what cause it. I'm old school If I'm paid to do something and i agree to it, I better dam well produce or i deserve the downfall.
this mofo doesn't know anything
Not sure why I keep seeing this throughout the thread. I can't think of a bad Platinum game outside of their Activision efforts, which are far from half of the games they've released. I haven't played Star Fox, but even factoring that in, it's still not close to being half.
There are definitely some stinkers in their history.

Technically, if Platinum could buy the IP back from Microsoft that's exactly the same situation. They never canceled Rime though, just stopped their funding/support of it. The devs always stated they planned to continue on and eventually release it as a multiplat.
Other Gears games sold better than 4 on a smaller hardware base. That has everything to do with it. Name one game that sold better on Xbox one than it did on 360? You can't, because there aren't as many Xbox ones out there
Creative differences and technical issues; what's so unbelievable about that?
These would be the most probable reasons for a cancellation.
I hope journos like Schreier are willing to dig in, because this and what the CNET writer wrote seem to indicate huge clashes between MS and Platinum.
He doesn't actually know things, he's just speculating like everyone else here is in the thread
Absolutely nothing about it is unbelievable. I just thought with that video's title, he'd actually have some answers to what we've all been speculating in this thread, but he's just doing the same thing as us.
When did Crackdown 3 get cancelled? How many games have Microsoft cancelled this generation? Like big titles tho.

Yeah it is and it spells out that maybe Xbox is hurting financially which is what I meant initially. Just because they're backed by a massive company like Microsoft doesn't mean they don't have their own financial targets to hit and stay on. Xbox is hurting bad and Microsoft's money isn't a catch all to appease us as fans.
Do you think this puts off other devs from working with Microsoft?
