They weren't "cancelled" as such, but the Wii U certainly had the rug pulled out from under it.

It's all about guaranteed that the Xbox One will live a longer life than the Wii U did.

They didn't cancel anything they announced either. Not even a Zelda for Wii U wich is coming to both
 
Their lineup is really mediocre. Scratch that...it's awful.

I don't care much for Halo Wars or State of Decay those were always side games not system sellers now they're using them as system sellers when they aren't. It's a bad lineup. I have little interest in Sea of Thieves but nothing concrete. We don't even know if SOT and Crackdown 3 will be released at all. Even if they do they aren't games I look forward to. I might buy and enjoy if it's decent but that's it. That's a horrible lineup tbh.

Not only that even if they are in the right on all their cancellations this is bad PR in terms of their dev relations. Why would devs want to work with you ?

I don't know. Such depressing news. They've always told us a bunch of BS. They never could back up their positive spin hype talks. E3 will just be another disappointment.

The only reason I own an X1 is because of Forza Horizon. Halo and Gears are on a slow death. Their portfolio is super bad, super thin and super generic. I mean the entire xbox brand has been on a downhill for a while now.

If they had invested during the xbox 360 days in continuing partnerships they started in OG xbox with PC developers. The library for XBOX would look a lot different and they wouldn't be leaning on Forza, gears and halo as crutches.

This is their own doing. Sony and even Nintendo have had their ups and down for sure in first party projects and contracted games. But they still somewhat retain a relationship with that studio and keep the doors open for future projects that may pop up.
Microsoft has too many corporate cooks in a division that was originally intended to be more about entertainment than games even in the Gates era. But once gamers who bought into their ecosystem pushed back on their vision later down the line they didn't change gears and try to correct the ship.

I gave them the benefit of the doubt once Phil stepped in and they were actually trying. Especially since they got rid of Kinect quickly, and started doubling down on game deals with studios. But they were literally one and done deals. So it goes to show you they had no intention of continuing any kind of partnership like Sony and Nintendo have with a lot of western and Japanese developers for future titles.
It reeks of board members wanting quarterly earning to look good, and giving the go ahead to spend money locking up exclusive deals with no long game. And this has been going on since 360 days. It's just now starting to really catch up since their initial plan this gen had to change last minute.

Xbox needs a fucking reboot as in, new people running the division with full control and no interference. They need to straight up court tons of developers on their platform and build good will and relationships.

Because right now, the future looks dark for xbox going forward and no high powered 4K console is going to change that.

I am really worried about the impact this cancellation will have on Platinum Games. I can't see this ending without massive downsizing unless they can land a new partnership for consistent development with a publisher. Always a sad day to hear about the potential downsizing or closing of a development studio. Sincerely hope Platinum can weather the storm somehow.

Also, this is the second time we have heard about a third party exclusive getting cancelled after relations soured with a 2nd party development partners. Combine that with some of the horror stories we heard like MS creating trailers w/o any dev input and Xbox talking heads talking about features in games that the devs arent even working on and it paints an awfully grim picture of how MS manages their out of house development partnerships.

They also seem to have burnt a lot of bridges (Remedy, Platinum, Insomniac, Crytek) with third parties this gen. I mean its just crazy how many third party partners have completely dropped their development partnerships with MS this gen. To say its a troubling precedent would be a vast understatement and I think it speaks volumes about how they actually conduct things behind closed doors and since third party development partnerships are such a cornerstone of their first party development pipeline it certainly doesn't bode well for MS' future.

TLDR: The well of third partner partners is rapidly drying up and they seem to have been bailing the well with giant buckets this gen making it dry up that much faster. Pretty soon their people are going to be mighty thristy

Pretty sure Team Meat isn't working with them again, but there's plenty of developers that seem to enjoy Microsoft, so it probably comes down to "your mileage may vary" when you take on a project they pay for versus publishing your own IP through them.

Yup. Rime is definitely in the category of game that was shown but cancelled.

But that's pretty much the only one this generation that I can think of done by Sony, and even then it was never really touted as one of the key pillars/exclusives of the upcoming exclusive lineup like MS has done with the games they've cancelled.

I'm aware things can have issue. Like hitting an unmarked water line (I've seen it happen several times over) yes 3 years is a short time to make an open world AAA game for sure but look at mass effect. 4 year dev cycle for open world AAA RPG game with a MP mode as well. and they knocked it out of the park. AT the end of the day, you agree to do a job you do it period. contractors also get fired off of jobs and sued and have to pay other companies to finish it correctly. thats what happens. if you don't perform you get fired. I'm sure if your boss gave you deadlines you missed all the time you'd get fired, as would I.

It was part of E3 2014's opening montage (alongside Halo, Gears, etc) and had a fairly prominent feature in practically all of Microsoft's conferences before its cancellation. I'd say that's a pretty big game, for Microsoft of course.

It's incredible that Microsoft is still doubling down on the games as a service, "ecosystems" and always online thing when Sony won the generation by catering to the hardcore gamer. They are in love with themselves, and no one else.

Scalebound seem to be a big hefty investment as well which we will get more info on over time. But who knows.

Honestly it seems that MS is cheaping out lately on investing in their games. Only games that seem to meet the light of day are stuff like recore that don't look like they took much money to make or sea of thieves which honestly doesn't look too impressive for what it is. They also likely have their people come around and try to tell devs what their game should be (micro transactions and multiplayer) instead of letting them have full creative control for better or worse.
