Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

If it was almost done it probably wouldn't have been canned. ROI would dictate that it would have to make less on release than it would make between now and that time in order to justify canning it - if it were close to done that couldn't possibly be the case.
t.

Remember Fable legends? That game was done and was close to launch yet.....Ms shut the game down

During gamescom 2016 year they showed Scalebound in private showings.

They showed off something called "Dragon Link", something that they, as far as I know, haven't shown to the public ever and now possibly never will. Up until that point they only showed fairly basic combat that looked great but more in the vein of Dragon's Dogma and less like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. That's why many people used to Kamiya's games were pretty disappointed. And then they showed Dragon Link. It's a button you hold and then the camera switched into First Person Mode...and you controlled the dragon. So then you controlled the Dragon from Drew's perspective, which still looks HUGE because the camera doesn't zoom out but goes into first person and you fight against another huge Monster. And then they started comboing. They fluidly switched from Drew to the Dragon to Drew by holding or not holding the Dragon Link button.

Think the weapon system of DmC but instead of holding a button to switch to a certain weapon you hold a button to switch to a fucking dragon. So these two characters juggled that huge monkey enemy into the air with all the usual attacks and combos you know from Platinum Games only it was A HUGE GODDAMN DRAGON DOING THE COMBOS. There was a combo counter and a rating and everything. It was their direct answer to the "Where is the Platinum action?" question.

It looked fucking great and as far as I'm aware they have never released that footage, just as they never showed the HUGE array of customising options and RPG features.

I'm so mad about this cancellation. Goddamnit.
this hurts even more now

They are one of the biggest companies in the world with an unimaginable amount of money to spend. Even if all different department have their weight to pull inside the company and can't go on crazy spending sprees, one or two goodwill projects per generation like Scalebound given an extra ~1-1,5+ years of development time to overcome whatever problems they face would hardly bankrupt them.

This was a goodwill project. It obviously didn't go the way anyone wanted it. No one wants to cancel these massive deals unless shit has gone sideways and after 2+ years and very poor public showings and what must be piss poor milestone checks, Microsoft ultimately decided they had made the wrong choice. It's a business and no one wants to keep dumping funds into an endeavor you know you'll never make back.

Also, we have no idea what the state of the game is. We don't know if it was fun to play or completely broken. We can speculate all we want but all we know is something wasn't where it needed to be between the 2014 announcement and now so they had to call it. It is what it is.

Obviously there have been some high-profile cancellation of previously touted projects, but is there actually anything concrete yet to the blame being heaped on MS? Seems like love of P* is clouding commentary on this.

Frankly just like with MGS, Konami and Kojima.

I do remember, Fable Legends was a game as a service though with a studio that they were trying to close, it's a little different than something they're outsourcing and have no associated costs with besides marketing and shipping the game, Fable Legends if they launch they're committing to a lot more down the line.

As it stands I see very little reason to get an Xbox One. Between the Phantom Dust debacles and Scalebound I find myself uninterested in Microsoft's offerings. I sincerely hope they aren't betting it all on power with the Scorpio and third-parties. Gears/Halo/Forza can't carry the system in my opinion.

Who knows, maybe they've got some really good unannounced titles and a few more timed-exclusives. Right now it doesn't look that good.

Nope, the game had potential. Just because the game had a rough E3 demo, didn't mean the game was shit.

Well, to be fair plenty of games with potential have failed. That alone doesn't mean anything. I'm interested in hearing more details about why this project fell apart.

I had the game preordered but can't say anything i've seen so far has looked amazing. I was just HOPING the game would deliver.

That it costs money to advertise and they would rather spend that money on games that can make tons of money.
They want home runs or games that will rake in money, month after month.

Not even Halo, Gears or Forza are home runs at this point, their last instalments sold worse than previous games in their respective series, the only one who keep selling about the same is Forza but still. This mentality is why MS is likely to get out of the console business, they want home runs straight away and are not willing to commit to build franchises from the ground up, that's why they bought Gears from Epic instead of leaving Black Tusk to do their own thing.

lol dont believe everything you read on the internet

Like your post?

I haven't been on /v/ in years, just think you're getting repeatedly over defensive about a dumb joke.

You are the one defending a dumb joke.

Edit:

I'll admit with Kamiya's mental health in question it could come off as lacking respect, but I doubt everyone even knows that.

So pizzacat is, paraphrasing him, dumb enough to not inform himself on the subject at hand, while expecting people to know where he (pizzacat) lives.

Which doesn't make his shitpost any better. We are done.

Well we have journalists saying that MS was definitely on some sketchy shit. That's where a lot of this is coming from.

The thing is, why risk investing in an Xbox when the future of any exclusive they announce is up in the air and has the potential to be shut down at any moment? It doesn't inspire confidence in the buyer.

Constantly announcing the cancellation of games in development just causes an air of uncertainty for all potential consumers.

Nope, the game had potential. Just because the game had a rough E3 demo, didn't mean the game was shit.

The exact same thing could be said in the opposite direction. Just because some press liked a behind-closed-doors demo doesn't mean the game was awesome. We'll just never know.

Damn...I was actually thinking of getting Scorpio or whatever iteration of Xbox One for this game. I thought the latest showing of Scalebound looked great. Damn shame its cancelled.

Reading Eurogamer's article on the debacle, it just sounds like PG couldn't get it to work. The game changed too many times and the producers lost their drive.

It's fucking heartbreaking.

Do you have a PC with Windows 10? Just buy things there if you don't want to buy an Xbox.

I don't get it, sony releases the last guardian after 7 years of it's first announcement and microsoft just cancels games right away, why not give it some time for changes though. First fable 3 and now this.

Or are the costs really that high?

They didn't announce it, people leaked it.

It apparently was canceled early in December.

The Xbox division is under a lot of scrutiny at Microsoft. Not a lot of margin for error, I'd imagine.

I saw Kamiya at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I tried to walk away without looking at hum but couldn't help bit watch him block me on twitter, after successfully walking away I continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Haha, that's ridiculous. I met him at E3 this year and he was pretty nice. I told him I really like the games he's worked on and was looking forward to Scalebound. He looked kind of annoyed at me but I didn't think much of it. Now I can see how big of a dick he can be when he's not at an industry event, yeesh.

It's interesting to me to see how many people are disapointed, the last time they showed the game I remember everyone trashing it. Too bad it got cancelled though. I think no one should point fingers till we know the whole story though.

TBH I wish Crimson Dragon never got released, so disapointing.

My initial impression, which was positive, but measured, was that it would basically be Kamiya doing Dragon's Dogma (which I think is a decent, not great, game) except you also fight along with a monster instead of pawns (also co-op). Reading this Dragon Link shit just tells it was going to be better than that. Please uncancel it thank you.

What's there not to get? Sony still plans on publishing Japanese games years from now, and they want a healthy working relationship with their Japanese partners and studios, as well as fans of those talent. MS probably does not even have plans for publishing any Japanese games moving forward, probably not many games period, and if corporate rumors are to be believed, they might not even see much of a worthwhile future in the core gaming business long term.

lmao, please don't fall for that, it's an old copypasta. it originally had ryan gosling.

We have this, need to wait and see what happens.

Kamiya ate my child last week.

He's not the only one saying this.

So the press are lying about what they saw at Gamescom?

Wut? We have sites corroborating what Rob said.

link please. this thread is getting like 20 posts a minute and its impossible to keep up. op is doing a terrible job as well.

i dont know why they would show not one but two gameplay demos and not show the coolest thing about the game. i also didnt read hear any particularly glowing impressions back at gamescom about closed door demos and they usually leak. and now we have some guy saying omg this thing has dragon combos and everyone thinks omg best game ever when the reality is that those combos didnt look too neat.

see the impressions of the suicide squad's original cut where some guy posted glowing impressions of harley and joker's deleted scenes. we all thought that would have saved the movie but they added those back in and they were actually kinda terrible.

one last analogy, no one gets divorced if they have a happy marriage. no game gets cancelled if it looked amazing.

Yeah that's why I was asking for anything concrete that I might have missed in the past few hours. I'd need to know more about these contracts or how they handled it before I'm willing to throw them under the bus. Even if they did something shady, I don't buy that P* is blameless in project management here.

Hopefully Nier: Automata does well & these ideas can be put into Drakengard 4 or if these Cygames partnerships work out then maybe they can be put into a Rage of the Bahamut game.

Because it's a chance to shit on MS, rather than just believing the more obvious answer that the game was actually as fucked as it looked every time they showed it.
Stop creating this narrative that the game looked like a complete disaster. Not everyone thought it looked "fucked" or shitty. It had framerate problems and the huge boss fight wasn't the best looking thing ever, but framerate issues are something that often get (mostly) ironed out late in development and boring big bosses would have only been one portion of the game (and not necessarily all of them would have been boring just because one might've been based on a quick live demo of an unfinished game still presumably a year or so away from release by a possibly inexperienced/shitty player who didn't know how to best utilize the skills/weapons available).

Even the big boss didn't look so horrible that it would completely ruin the game, maybe it could've even been fun with a fully unlocked combat system and after some time mastering the combat system, being played by a person who knows what they are doing. It was a bit rough but something that looked like it could be fun when finished if they could get rid of the framerate problems.

As always: Wait till the games you want actually come out!

To be fair though: Scalebound was shown off like 3-4 times since it's initial reveal and Gears of War 4 was out when I bought it.

It's super rare a game gets cancelled these days, and this wasn't a tech demo thing like that Star Wars game.

This sucks.

I hope Sea of Thieves turns into something and doesn't suck. This console is starved for exclusives and none of the ones shown for next year make me give even half a crap.(Sea of Thieves included, but I'm hopeful...)

I can't see a reason why the game would be cancelled if it looked good and was going well. Clearly they didnt meet expectations. As for why or who is to blame, that's what I'm curious about.

Sadly after this,Kamiya will still refuse to throw his cards at Sony even if his company are in bad shape.

Throwing his cards at Ms and Nintendo last and this gen didn't work out for them.

It's a meme.

I've actually had the pleasure of meeting with Kamiya—at Platinum Games, no less—and he was a pleasant, personable guy, if a bit under the weather at the time. I have a lot of respect and admiration for him, and I feel terrible about the cancellation. :/

Holy shit I hope Platinum are okay.

These sorts of sudden cancellations on massive projects have destroyed mid-tier studios in the past. Please make it through this unscathed Platinum-kun!

They should assimilate into Capcom. Most of the big names were from there anyway. Inject modern development blood into that old big blue.

Wait. Where are you hearing any of this?

When the new MS CEO took over there were rumblings that the Xbox division was under evaluation. They have since obviously come out to support the division and say all is well, but let's be honest, they have Minecraft, they want to expand more and more into a services driven company, and that doesn't really gel with the traditional business of just making hardware and publishing exclusives.

The exact same thing could be said in the opposite direction. Just because some press liked a behind-closed-doors demo doesn't mean the game was awesome. We'll just never know.

True, I just think people talking shit about a game that was clearly still in it's early development cycle.

Speculation

So nothing. Lots of reactionary posts in here.

I mean. I guess... So, you're just speculating? Nothing at all concrete?
