Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

Surprised that the cancellation sparked a 100+ page thread. I mean, Platinum's output over the last years has been really mixed, partially amazing and partially terrible, and I never thought the videos of Scalebound put it firmly among the former.

Actually, has Platinum ever made a commercially successful game. I think the first Bayonetta did something like 3 million between the PS360, but Sega still said the numbers were disappointing.

Kind of surprising to see a big game cancelled these days. It had all the telltale signs of a trainwreck but those usually get released anyway

Exactly. And that could mean several different things. Like porting games or creating new ones. Not you what are you getting at...

Ports and new games are games development. And yes, we don't which game(s) they are working on. The question was not which game, the question was are they interested in working together.

Not totally true. What's being developed is pretty relevant.

Yeah...but then Bayo 2 did not do well either. I'm rooting for Platinum as much as anyone (hell, I bought a Wii U just for Bayo), but I wish there was some actual indication that Nintendo was interested in working with them again.

Platinum is a Switch partner. Simple as that.

The question was are Nintendo and Platinum interested in working together again.

Answer:

They are. End of story. Further details unknown.

I assume they can return their budgets or else why would any publisher sign on with them?

Given the direction MS has gone in, I honestly would bet the main reason the game was cancelled is that it didn't push the service agenda, rather than the quality of the game itself. Regardless of whether the game was turning out good or bad.

I think Platinum has said several times they are lean and can get work done for a fraction of the cost of some other studios, so they usually do well in terms of staying afloat.

Let's be honest though this game wouldn't have done well. It would have sold bad.

In terms of Microsoft's current IP's.

Sunset Overdrive was marketed poorly, despite it being REALLY good. I finally understood the potential of the game, but it didn't quite click until 1/3 through the game. It took me 2 years and for it to go on clearance before I played it. I should have bought and supported it on launch. I like the breaking of the 4th wall and character customization.

Recore was pretty good, but the reviews that plagued the tedium did ruin it. I did buy it, worth it for its price point though.

Quantum Break had a cool thing going on, but wouldn't have lasted the whole game, it looks like it would overstay its welcome with little to no replay value. Did not purchase it.

Halo 5's campaign is atrocious. This game ruined Halo franchise for me and I never went on to beating it. Went with Destiny instead.

Forza. I'm not a car person so pass.

Gear of War 4. Have it, Didn't play it yet. Looks generic and plays generic and expectedly.

Project Scorpio is looking good as a hardware upgrade. For games that will take full advantage of it I'm not sure.

This will probably be the year of Nintendo and their Switch. I can't see any hype for Project Scorpio. VR is losing its touch. I have PS VR and its collecting dust. I get quite the headaches for long periods.

"New" Zelda. I'm pretty much on the same boat (and there has to be at least one Metroid game as well) so I also skipped the Wii U. :(

Skipping Nintendo hardware release is impossible for me. I knew WiiU was gong to fail but I was still there day one. Stockholm syndrome I guess.

WindWaker felt new...kinda :)

I'm privy to this excert straight from Eurogamer:

CTRL - F "frame rate issues"....zilch...hmmm

Beloved developer + general fear that MS is moving to SaaS model for Xbox = Many paged thread on GAF

Is this the first cancelled game for PG? Kinda feel bad for them since they're the go-to studio to resurrect dead/troubled games from other publishers lol

It has already been mentioned, but I think the idea is that instead of funding a game that wasn't where they wanted it to be for another year or more they could put those funds in to games like Crackdown and Sea of Thieves. How much weight you'd like to put behind that line of reasoning is up to you.
As much as I would for any corporate apologist talk.

Dear Rare

Now that Scalebound got cancelled, we're shifting funds toward adding that feature you were asking for, CONGRATS!!

Best Regards
Head of Xbox Phil

I'm also the "there has to be at least one Metroid" guy to validate a Nintendo console. I only strike points from N64 and 3DS for this, though. (DS has GBA b/c. Wii U has Wii b/c.)

First one where it became public. Wouldn't be surprised considering their history as guns for hire that some were cancelled before the games really got off the ground.

I had to pre-order this after watching the 2015 E3 trailer. Unfortunately, the 2016 E3 trailer made me drop my pre-order like a hot potato. It just wasn't a game for me. I was also, far more invested in Horizon: Zero Dawn.

It's still sad that this was cancelled, especially for the development team.

Source? we all know Bayonetta 2 was in development for other systems before being oficially published but It worked out pretty well in the end for them .

Specially after this news

A bad contract? What? Nintendo fully funded both titles. And they are still on really good terms.

While with MS...

I was reflecting that they went to Nintendo after Nintendo knew they were looking for published months before and everyone said no, most likely meant they didn't get a amazing deal.
I doubt anyone knows the contract

I am reflecting this on after them making Activision games, 1 of which was pure garbage (TMNT) and now contract talk about this game

We don't fully know the extend of MS meddling and if they "sabotaged" the game, but at the same time Platinum Games is not a top-tier studio despite the hype they get on GAF and elsewheres- so if they did fail to meet deadlines and couldn't meet up with the requirements MS may have had for them, I wouldn't be totally surprised.

That seems pretty unreasonable! (lol)
:( yeah. I just love Metroid and go by the "five game rule" so if there's no Metroid game there isn't much for me to play besides Zelda/Pikmin/Mario RPG. I'm not into platformers so I don't enjoy Mario games.
Are you enjoying your 3DS purchase?
I loved the Gameboy Advance SP and had a great time with it, but I haven't owned a handheld in a while. I got a Vita and to be honest it's shelved somewhere. I took it out for a few days when I got my PS4 to do the whole remote play but the novelty wore off pretty quickly. So no, I don't own a 3DS. I did play a few minutes of one of the stylus Zeldas but... I just couldn't get into them.

I was there day one for the Wii (because of TP) and loved when the MP Trilogy came out. Now that Nintendo is merging their handheld/console device in one I think it's very likely we'll get a new Metroid, so I'll probably buy the switch. As long as it has enough Nintendo exclusives that I like, I'll buy it. I don't care about most third parties and I don't care if the console sells a million or a billion units as long as I'm getting the games I like.

Activision barely gave them a budget.

Microsoft and Platinum are apparently on bad terms now.

Nintendo gave Platinum large budgets and they are still on good terms.

This news fucking sucks. Literally every game that made me consider ever purchasing an Xbox has either been canned or eventually ported.

Also, all this talk about MS going for a games as service route has me weary about the state of Cuphead.

Look on the bright side, with Scalebound canned, maybe Platinum can finally work on that Zelda game for Nintendo where Ganondorf messes up Link's face with a bottle right?

Not saying that Platinum has no faults whatsoever, but they are a developer studio that works with a lot of limitations being the "freelancers" that they are.

Just hope someone picks up that team man. I don't want to log on to gaf next week and see "platinum lays off 100 employees"

Wasn't this game getting a ton of criticism for trying really hard to have "attitude" (main character fighting with his headphones on and the way he talked) and there was valid criticism that the gameplay didn't look great? I swear there was a demo, I want to say it was a recent E3, where the presenter showed a boss fight from this game and really played up the angle that the boss we were seeing is the largest boss PG has made in a game. And I want to say some multiplayer was shown off in the same presentation and the general view seemed to be the game wasn't looking too great

If they they bit off more than they could chew what does that matter?

Multiple senior members taking a month off if true is a big flag that something was wrong at PG
