Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

So besides the usual suspects what are they even doing at e3? It seems like they'll have a paltry e3. They have to have some new big thing right.

Presumably they'll be quietly moving the Xbox One brand to the background and focusing everything on the Scorpio. Kind of a soft reboot, restarting the hype cycle with a new console and trailers for the next Halo, Gears and Forza.

Welp...I was actually looking forward to this one, and my cousin was gonna buy a XboxOne once this game came out since he loves action games and REALLY loves dragons.

Just.....why though?

Because it was really bad? Tell me another reason why MS would cancel a game after funding development of a game for 3 years and showed off to the public multiple times.

Actually yes, because Sony Japan would totally survive a cancellation and it is unlikely that Sony Japan would be fucked over by Sony in the same vein MS apparently screwed with Platinum(based on what insiders and reporters are hinting).

Also, Sony has a broader lineup of exclusives.

Sony has way more games in development at any given time, so no single cancellation blows a hole in their portfolio like this does for Microsoft.

in theory, i find it strange a capable developers like P* games to cancel a game. it makes me think automatically its not their fault. as they still produce bad games and good games to the market. even if Scalebound is bad game, it should be still out.

there is more to the story than what we know so far.

When was the last time a title like this was cancelled? We aren't talking about something light, it was at 2 E3's and had substantial stage time at one of them. Also something so deep into development.

Damn, that sucks for Platinum. What I saw of the actual game didn't inspire much confidence though, extremely slow gameplay and unlikable/annoying protagonist. Didn't look like a Platinum game at all.

I hate to say it, but it looked really bad for a Platinum title. Don't feel good for them and hope they land on their feet, but maybe it's better it doesn't come out.

Fable Legends. 70 milllion dollar budget. Closed beta stage. Shown alongside Halo 5, Gears 4, Forza 6 and Rise of The Tomb Raider as part of the "greatest games lineup in xbox history" in not one, but two conferences. Cancelled.

I'm genuinely surprised by how excited people are for Crackdown 3. I had no idea there was so much enthusiasm surrounding that game. To be clear, this isn't me saying it's going to suck—I just thought the first two were pretty okay.

The original Crackdown is literally fun printed directly onto a DVD.

In my opinion, the best GTA game there is on the market. It was made by the creator of GTA so it makes sense. It's like he took GTA, trimmed AAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL of the fat (of which there was an obese amount of) and added orb hunting and super powers. It's easily the most focused and streamlined GTA game there is.

Agreed. David Jones is fucking rad.

the sequel also sucked so people are especially thirsty for a good crackdown

Scorpio is beefed up Xbox One, I don't get people who try to separate them.

I bought the first Crackdown for the Halo 3 beta, and ended up enjoyed it quite a bit. Didn't bother with Crackdown 2 though as it didn't look appealing to me at all. Was done with zombies after finishing RE2. Crackdown 3 seems to be going back to the feel of the first one, and I'm excited what can be done to the game with the tons of feedback the old games have received since then, and new, more powerful hardware.

I didn't know about all of that. Sheesh!

I don't really want to say for sure, but in all likelihood it was a combination of several factors.

I don't know or am in a position to know, but something like this is exactly as you said Matt, it is most likely a combination of several factors at play that caused this to happen. For MS to use the game in marketing during the holidays, many different factors had to come into play recently for MS to pull the plug on the game at this time.

Thanks for stopping by Matt and posting, always appreciate devs coming into to threads and making comments, appreciate it.

Such a colossal let down. Boring. Frustrating. No necessary refinements.

Crackdown's story has always been a big disappointment, be it 1 or 2 though. I hope they give the storyline more than "you done did it. well done. by the way we're bad guys. *camera kick*" as an ending.

I didn't know about all of that. Sheesh!

I was a tester for the game and it was pretty bad...the latest build had some really good improvements however, but was still something that did not seem to be very fun and I really did not see it being something that many would enjoy. Visuals however, were pretty damn impressive.

While there are some similarities, to be fair Phantom Dust reboot had a much lower budget than Scalebound, and its announcement was too early. I can see why it got cancelled, and as a huge Phantom Dust fan I'm glad it got cancelled and we're getting just an improved port of the original, Yukio Futatsugi wasn't directly involved with the remake, and I also feared of the restyling MS showed when they announced the reboot, so I'd rather have the original one, and if it succeeds maybe we'll be closer to have a sequel done by Yukio, but who knows.

Scalebound must have gotten a much bigger budget, and for more time than Phantom Dust, so for me if SB has gotten cancelled it's a sign something was wrong in its development and MS decided it was better to cancel the deal than continue investing money in it.

Everybody saying oh it looked bad and this and that, yet nobody played it and what we all saw wasn't even a close to finished game.

In all fairness to Ruffian, Crackdown 2 was the result of more Microsoft shenanigans and fuck over antics.

They decided to green light Crackdown 2 out of nowhere after initially being effectively done with the IP (surprise surprise) and then expected Ruffian to make the game in 6 months. Ruffian were never even really given a real chance.

The thing is that I'm willing to bet that Fable & Scalebound would have come out to be average games and that during the year they came out, there would have been worse games.

It shows for sure. Wouldn't blame them for a second.

Is it true Kamiya had to take time off for his mental health? I only just realized I haven't seen a single tweet from him in a few weeks. I worry about how he's doing.

:( I'm shocked to hear this news. It seemed like Kamiya was quite upset with MS over Twitter but I never expected Scalebound to be cancelled. Any chance this is going to pull a "True Fantasy Live Online" and cause Platinum Games to pull a Level 5 on Microsoft from now on?
AKA: pretend that MS and Xbox don't exist

So anyone want to take bets on Sony rolling out Hideki Kamiya at one of their 2017 pressers?

I'd like to believe he'll be there. But this cancellation probably fucked him up- that's four years of dedication that turned to dust. Maybe he'll take some time away. I hope Platinum stays afloat :/

Wait a minute.
Team Ninja release a PS Exclusive last year (DOAX3) and another next month (Nioh)
And Nioh published by Sony.
They seems become Sony's second party now ,they used to be MicroSoft's second party ,right? What happened?
