Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

I don't think Kamiya going back to Capcom would make any of those more likely. Capcom will make whatever the top brass decides to greenlight, and the presence of Kamiya as a game director (without the influence of Mikami that allowed him to prosper there in the 2000s) isn't going to change anything.

Kamiya had the freedom he did at Capcom and Platinum because he was in tight with producers (like Mikami and Inaba) who were able to flex their muscle and let their teams do what they believed in. A solo Kamiya within Nintendo or Capcom is not likely to have the same degree of control over his projects that we've seen from DMC1 on.

It depends on how much stature he would have within Nintendo. For example Sakurai gets to do whatever the fuck he wants.

At this point I'm seriously wondering whether the Scorp will be worth bothering with for anything other than uprezzed Halo/Cod/Forza

They keep failing to deliver any sort of substantive/varied games lineup and drop projects all over the place.

How do I know they won't just pull the plug on it all not that long after release. They've eroded my trust.

During gamescom 2016 year they showed Scalebound in private showings.

They showed off something called "Dragon Link", something that they, as far as I know, haven't shown to the public ever and now possibly never will. Up until that point they only showed fairly basic combat that looked great but more in the vein of Dragon's Dogma and less like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. That's why many people used to Kamiya's games were pretty disappointed. And then they showed Dragon Link. It's a button you hold and then the camera switched into First Person Mode...and you controlled the dragon. So then you controlled the Dragon from Drew's perspective, which still looks HUGE because the camera doesn't zoom out but goes into first person and you fight against another huge Monster. And then they started comboing. They fluidly switched from Drew to the Dragon to Drew by holding or not holding the Dragon Link button.

Think the weapon system of DmC but instead of holding a button to switch to a certain weapon you hold a button to switch to a fucking dragon. So these two characters juggled that huge monkey enemy into the air with all the usual attacks and combos you know from Platinum Games only it was A HUGE GODDAMN DRAGON DOING THE COMBOS. There was a combo counter and a rating and everything. It was their direct answer to the "Where is the Platinum action?" question.

It looked fucking great and as far as I'm aware they have never released that footage, just as they never showed the HUGE array of customising options and RPG features.

I'm so mad about this cancellation. Goddamnit.

Man.

I just hope MS had the decency to let them keep a lot of the code, but I bet it was licensed to the nines.

Yo guys what if:

Sakurai is not a Nintendo employee afaik.

Kamiya wouldn't have to be either. He might even find that preferable. The French rumor merely says he might want to get "closer" to Capcom or Nintendo.

Another thing from another journalist (Nathan Brown, deputy director of Edge), unused Inaba quote from a Nier interview:
C1zCfFnXUAA2HMA.jpg

He says he's not implying it's MS, but that Platinum certainly prefers certain ways of being handled.
Wow. I do hope they are able to collaborate more with Square afterwards.

About working with publishers, has Platinum shared any negatives with their time doing their Nintendo games???
Seemed to be fairly smooth sailing from what I have read.

True, but Sakurai has (had? remains to be seen) that status because he was close personal friends with Iwata, who also considered him a visionary and believed he deserved absolute freedom and blank checks from Nintendo. Going from the Iwata Asks interviews featuring Kamiya, it's likely that there are people at Nintendo who at least respect him, but no one who has a working relationship with him the way his fellow Capcom alumni do.

At least Kamiya seemed happy about their collaboration. However, since both Bayonetta 2 and W101 bombed on the Wii U, I fear Nintendo may not fund another Platinum exclusive for their platform.

I want a kamiya game more than every 5 years please.

Also, kamiya is a director. Any game he would work on under kojima would be a demotion.

also, kamiya's way more into crazy as it pertains to gameplay where kojima's more into crazy as it pertains to the story he's telling. the two would probably clash just from the basic level of what they want out of games.

That doesn't mean that Platinum may do another Nintendo exclusive with Ninty acting as a publisher.

Considering how happy Inaba was about their relationship with Square, I can see them doing another one, especially if Nier: Automata does well. Not to mention that minimizes the possibility of Platinum's next game being locked on a single platform.

So, Square, please make this happen.

Metal Gear Rising was a spectacular blend of both, even if it wasn't directed by either.

If Kamiya were to leave Platinum, would he actually have a team to lead on projects? Off the top of my head, I'm not sure why he would leave Platinum for a studio that doesn't have a working team in place for him.

How would game development be if publishers had no power/authority and developers were in full control regarding how much they needed for the development of their games and their games only got released when they said so? Seems absurd that publishers, the majority of which don't seem to have a clue about game development, has so much power.

Well, its its their money, IP and technology.
Why wouldnt they have an absolute say over the game development?
What many pubs do tho, is to trust in a developer to deliver a good game within their specifications, without worrying too much about details

You know who else is a freelancer?

So like Platinum, except he directs all the games?

Nah, not quite. Sora was a company made up of a handful of people (or just two? I'm not sure) that basically contracted Sakurai out as a director for games made by external companies. In the case of Kid Icarus, Nintendo created a separate company that was dissolved after development.

Not necessarily, since leaving Platinum means he loses access to Platinum's staff - and even as someone who follows Kamiya and his games closely, I'm not absolutely confident in his ability to continue putting out games of the quality he has without the staff familiar with what makes his games tick.

Sora was literally just Sakurai (and maybe his wife, I forget).

Very sad. The game looked to have a lot of potential. Kamiya has not tweeted all year, which makes me wonder how long ago they came to this decision.

I agree they wouldn't work well together, but Kojima has made some pretty weird gameplay choices in pretty much all of his games.
I mean most recently, the Fulton mechanic alone was some weird shit.

Doesn't Kojima want KojiPro to be much bigger than just him and his team? Kamiya could be a massive move in that direction, and they are both the great kind of crazy so could work. Though it's probably too early for the studio to be capable of supporting multiple teams, so I doubt it'll happen.

How big is Neogaf's influence? I mean could neogaf community try and convince Microsoft to give this story a better ending?

If Neogaf had huge influence Bayonetta 2 would be the highest selling Wii U game, Miyazaki would work on every game, and the Vita would get Gravity Rush 2.

Read some pages, regardless of the drama I'm disappointed. Wasn't that excited about Scalebound but I like Platinum, and MS. I would have bought this even if it ended up being mediocre. This is a weird scenario where I don't get why it was canceled but at the same time I also understand why it was. I guess that doesn't make much sense, but that's how I feel.

No, not at all. In fact, we at GAF tend to be so far outside the mainstream that our causes probably won't find the big support necessary anyway.

Yeah, Kojima is still gathering people for his own project, so it seems highly unlikely that he is able to staff Kamiya as well anytime soon.

While I do find discussing if Gaf can change something pointless in this case, cause obviously not, you are a bit underselling. #PS4NoDRM and all that.

You can put Star Fox on that list.

Though Bayonetta and W101 are damn good games.

Have you heard of a little game called Duke Nukem Forever? How about Daikatana? Unlimited freedom doesn't necessarily get you anything good.

Making games costs money. Publishers have power because they provide the money that gets games made. Because they are the ones who stand to win or lose based on the game's performance, it'd be crazy if they didn't have some kind of way to control costs and make sure they got what they were paying for.

Developers don't always know what they're doing. Maybe they're spending time on an idea nobody will like. Maybe they want to blow a lot of money pursuing cutting edge features when it won't meaningfully benefit the quality of the game. Maybe they're straight up goofing off and not efficiently using the money they're given, or building a game the publisher doesn't want to fund.

People bring up the Phantom Dust story, and I think it's totally reasonable to call that mismanagement on Microsoft's end. But there's plenty of blame to go around. Darkside, in their inexperience, promised Microsoft they were going to create a game that they themselves knew they could not produce with the budget they were given. If you say yes to every demand you're given, only to reveal the truth after millions of dollars have already been sunk into development, what's your business partner supposed to think? How can they trust you to fulfill your promises after that?

Just because Microsoft is bad at publishing games doesn't mean that publishers have no useful function. It's entirely possible to have healthy publisher/developer relationships that benefit both parties.

People wanting him to team with kojima is what i do not want. kojima can go f off with his hollywood dreams. Hopefully there's no problem internally with him and platinum.

Guys, a whole bunch of journalists from the various different gaming websites as well as devs from very popular studios frequent GAF. I've seen articles written that credit GAF on various occasions. I wouldn't say that we have no influence.
