Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

I just hope Kamiya is okay after this. From what i'm hearing from different places, it was a huge mental drain on the entire team and apparently some info made some people sick with what they heard. I don't know any details on that and i wish i did.

All i know is that its a shame and it should never have gotten to this point in the first place.

He hasn't made one tweet so far this year. When Kamiya is not tweeting, something is wrong. Either that or his New Years resolution was less twitter.

The silver lining in all this is that Platinum will probably never work with Microsoft again, which is great, because I have zero interest in Xbox. I hope Nintendo and Sony give them work!

So, we have another Prey 2 situation on our hands?

It took four years for these unfair and shady milestones to become apparent?

Or were these new milestones because Platinum were taking too long and MS felt they were wasting money?

Maybe MS didn't know what they really wanted and kept asking for different things like the Phantom Dust case.

So, yesterday we saw that MS had deleted all the Scalebound videos from its YT channel. The weird thing is that all the videos for Fable Legends (another cancelled game) are still there.

Why the double standards on this stuff?

That's interesting. It reminds me of Konami deleting all mention of Kojima Productions in their packaging and marketing. It wasn't done because they're evil or petty, but because they had transferred the Kojima Productions name to Hideo Kojima. Maybe there's hope???

Yeah, that's why i'm apprehensive about the guy. I can't imagine dedicating my time for years with such pressure only to crack at the end and have to shelve everything

Dude, seriously.... Platinum knew about these deadlines - they agreed to them.
This, to me, reads a bit like the justification for "at-will employement".
That is, correct in a strictly literal sense, but purposefully ignoring the underlying power differential and mechanics.

They didn´t catch them by surprise.

I know the whole "fuck MS" thing is en vogue right now, but there is no realistic scenario in which Platinum is not also responsible for this in a big way.

Deadlines can change during development.

Software development is a mess. It's possible Microsoft suddenly just changed what they wanted super far into development. It happens.

Transformers and TMNT would suggest there's an element of haphazardness to their development of late.

But then Nier seems decent so who knows.

At least it's not a True Fantasy/Level 5 situation again.

Why do people keep bringing up Transformers? It's actually a good game. TMNT is a different story. Activision shutdown their licensed division during its development, which likely tells you about how much support Platinum had during its development process.

The games were trash. Poorly developed trash that you'd expect form the likes of High Voltage not Platinum.

Licensed games is not an excuse. For such a renowned studio, you'd think they'd put more effort in and want their name to be connected with well developed games.

Have you EVEN played Transformers? That game is awesome. TMNT and Korra are their two trash games.

Ignoring the fact that transformers is pretty well regarded for being a good game, the quality of them has nothing to do with kamiya, and I don't think you could use either as an example of them being at fault regarding contract requirements

same with this trash post

I know of Star Fox being delayed although it should have probably been cancelled. I know of Transformers and TMNT being hot garbage. I know of W101 being a commercial failure. Not everything they do is great. No idea why doubting Platinum is out of the question.

There's also a heavy dash of "Just world" going about.

I dont know, im starting to see a trend here.
Phantom dust.....
Fable legends...
Scalebound....

Even if these games are not going to be big hits xbox needs to keep them to keep the fans trust.

Sony kept the last gaurdian after 8 years of development even though its not a big seller and the fans appreciat that

I'm not the one who started this and named other person "obtuse", so i don't understand why you quoting my message first.

Really? We're down to kindergarden "he started it" nonsense now? It takes two to tango.

Now let's get back to Scalebound.

I'm sad.

It doesn't matter how passionate a studio is or how hard working, developers are reliant on a reasonable time and a budget. And considering it's Activision we should probably be amazed they're as decent as they are.

Was multiplayer even part of the original trailers? I can't even remember but I feel like that was only from this recent e3. If that's the case I wouldn't be surprised if that was a late added feature on Microsofts request.... it would also explain why they removed the trailers from YouTube so we forget #conspiracy

The CG (first) trailer implied it with multiple dragons and riders joining in.
The first gameplay walkthrough did the same.

It's simplifying the issue but fundamentally I agree with this.

TLG was never going to set the world alight sales wise but it's a solid enough game with its release taking on a more symoblic value.

Likewise with Shenmue 3. Positioning themselves behind the kickstarter and offering undisclosed money backing was very shrewd reputationally if not financially.

Id rather Microsoft release Scalebound. Game was probably almost finished. Saw potential in this one. Besides 3rd party games Xbox 2017 is looking meager on the releases. Never cared for Crackdown so Cuphead is probably the only one I'll pick up so far. Announcing some new first party titles would be in Microsofts best interest because right now they're looking like trash.
I can think of a bunch of Ps4 games i want and only 1 from xbox smh.

SF is a Nintendo game, Platinum basically only created assets. Delays are on Miyamoto, not them.

Games being hot garbage or commercial failures have nothing to do with meeting deadlines and milestones.

I'll ask you again, do you know of Platinum ever missing deadlines, milestones or having trouble shipping a game? Why is it suddenly happening with Microsoft? Maybe because, as insiders reported, they made milestones unachievable on purpose, so that they could cancel the game?

How was Transformers trash?

It probably had a smaller budget then Activision's shitty Spider-Man games too.

Small for hire studio is offered a big shot by MS with unrealistic deadlines, it is not hard to see that Platinum knew what they were getting into and they took the chance anyway.

That's my guess.

given the very small amount we've seen of crackdown i'm not even sure we're going to be getting that this year.

If there is one thing that Platinum is known for, besides great character action combat, its efficiency. They have delivered projects on time and budget consistently under various publishers. Heck they were brought in to finish work on MGR and Star Fox when others were struggling. That is why so many of us find it so hard to believe that Platinum was having issues with deadline. Combine that with the fact that this not the first horror story to come out of MS third party relationship (it's not even the first one this generation).

I assume Rime would be a more appropriate comparison?
Is MS willing to give rights back to Platinum?

This was their comment yesterday when asked about ownership of the IP

"we do not comment on the details of our business agreements with partners"

Rime was initially Sony's IP, but IIRC they sold it to Tequila after they abandoned the project.
Not sure if Platinum will be even barely interested in buying Scalebound IP if there will be chance to do this, if they possibly failed to make working game with MS money. Rime is small indie title, while Scalebound was supposed to become a new AAA hit. And as it was mentioned here several times, Platinum games is guns for hire, they are not working with their own IP's.

No, but small budgets and short development time are, which was almost certainly the case.

Microsoft's business practices in regard to first party development, the dangling carrot approach to games shown and never being released.... It seems that Microsoft are in a really, really bad spot here in terms of perception. This E3 will probably be the most important for them in quite some time.

That being said, I wonder if Scorpio will be Microsofts last hardware console attempt.
