Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

Can we stop linking to twitters or blogs which don't seem to have credibility btw? It's hard enough to get discussions on track here without misinformation spreading everywhere. :/

I would say "and me", but really, they won't. Because I'll stick a knife in their ribs before they can put up their guard.

That seems needlessly violent. Grimlock would just use a hammer. :P

"Keep needless comments to yourself"

"I'm an adult"

I'm overloading on irony over here.
It's always hilarious when someone claims to be a rational person/professional/adult, but their post proves the contrary. Also, I'm starting to think he's fishing for a ban or something, replying to a mod like that.

I'm starting to suspect that you don't know what a red colored name means.

He is attempting to give you a hint that you are stubbornly refusing to accept.

Wait what does that mean ? Insider or verified source? I honestly don't know.

Edit nevermind got my answer.

With 2017 looking like one of the best years in recent memory for the PS4.... that lineup on XB is laughable.

I actually laughed when I saw that. If I had an xbox I'd be buying none of them games.

Obviously I'm not gonna start going 'lol xbox dead' n stuff but if I owned an xboxone i'd be pissed
I got an Xbox One S and I use it exclusively for 4K blu-ray playback.

My prediction? Microsoft will bet heavily on Scorpio this coming E3. They will have a completely new Halo, a new Forza game (probably called Forza "insert Scorpio's real name here"), Crackdown 3 (which will not look or play that good), a timed exclusive from Ubi and a timed exclusive from EA. As for the regular Xbox One, I cannot think of a single game that I would be hyped for this year.

Like I said earlier, obviously Microsoft thought they'd save more money by cancelling now then paying for another 8+ months of development for a game that was getting luke-warm reactions online and was apparently missing milestones.

milestones are only relevant to a client wanting progress reports, they're not relevant to the final product that said client can then sell. if in 8 months platinum could have finished the game, sorted performance issues and it turned out good. then MS would have something to sell, and even if it only got luke-warm critical reception and sold 500,000 worldwide, that's still upwards of 30 million dollars made back.

now, i don't know how much MS have sunk into it, but i can't imagine it's much more than 30 million, even if it has been in development for 4 years...now MS have a pile of assets sat on a harddrive and whatever money they've spend flushed down the toilet. that seems like a bad place to be. and again, this is MS...they're not short on cash. pushing for this to be finished, milestones be damned, would have given them a boost in player appreciation at the very least. the last thing they want to be known for is the company that shit cans games people want to play.

So for 2017 we have the following xbox games.

-Halo Wars 2 (will be released 100%)
-Sea of Thieves (does not have an exact release date besides 2017 1Q)
-Cuphead (does not have an exact release date besides summer 2017)
-Crackdown 3 (does not have an exact release date besides holiday 2017).

These titles aren't big heavy hitters anyway, system sellers.
Even then look at this lineup. 3 out of 4 aren't even 100%. Still a chance one or two of them might be cancelled at this rate. This is the worst lineup I can think of in quite some time.

They should make an honest commercial leading to E3. Instead of saying the best xbox lineup of all time. They should be honest for once and call it ''the worst xbox lineup of all time''.

Hmm, out of those Cuphead and propably sea of thieves are not meant for prime time, AAA witness the power of Xbox publicity.

Cuphead. I'm not sure it's going to be enough for me to hang onto my system though. Scalebound was a huge game for me this year.

Why buy them tho? They dont own any of the IP they worked on do they? Just keep funding them like they have in the past

And they will still be on Cygames payroll for a couple of years

But who knows. I do think they fit together well

Agreed completely. Far more likely that they'll become a quasi Nintendo 2nd party with full official independence, just like NLG.

i've never understood why a studio would cancel a game this late in and flush whatever they've invested so far down the drain? surely it would be wiser to invest a bit more, and have a product at the end that you can actually sell? it's not like MS are short of cash.. fable was the same, last i heard that was practically finished and in a long running beta phase. what do you gain from cancelling that so close to the finish line? it would have made at least some money. maybe no broke even, but cancelling it removed any and all chances of making ANY money.

i'm not sure platinum need any good vibes sending their way either really. they'll be fine. they have their hand in a big release this year with nier and they have another 2 projects in-line for 2018. if anything getting out of what was clearly a toxic partnership should help them do their job better.

Sunk cost fallacy.

That's why I said Xbox is doomed

Their 2017 lineup is a joke, especially compared to Sony's

A console can survive just off of third-party support. That's essentially what happened during the 360 Kinect era.

How about you comment on the content of my posts and keep needless comments like tough guy to yourself?

I don't doubt they face challenged. So do many, many, many other successful companies. Unfair is government controlling production and only legally allowing a corporation or entity terrible terms. No such compulsion here. If PGA signed a bad contract and got burned, it's on them.

Either self fund and make money, take a loan and make money, or sign elsewhere for more favorable terms.

Your completely facile understanding of the industry contributes nothing to this conversation. The imbalance of power between independent studios which are often only months away from insolvency and the multinational publishers upon who they rely for ongoing operational funds is enormous. No matter how good the deal they sign looks on day one three years later you can still be stuck with unreasonable new demands, changing milestones and payments being held hostage.

Okay let's talk about contracts. Here's another example, send me $500 right now over Paypal and I won't ban you in 2 hours. You can't be forced into bad contracts unless you want to!
Now things are getting interesting.

Seriously, though. Contracts aren't always to the developer's benefit, and often it's a matter of a studio's survival.

Cuphead I'd be happy with as a PS4 user if it came through on PS plus for free one month but if that's a full retail release then wow....

It isn't exactly GOTY looking is it haha

Could you provide this amazing argument in the form of a list please

They had to list "big games" to compensate for the cancelation of Scalebound, and what did they list?

-Halo Wars 2
-Crackdown 3
-State of Decay 2
-Sea of Thieves

For Playstation we have:

Horizon: Zero Dawn
Nier: Automata
GT Sport
Gravity Rush 2
Nioh
Persona 5
Uncharted 4: The Lost Legacy
Hellblade
Drawn to Death
Detroit: Become Human
Yakuza 0
Farpoint
Matterfall
Wipeout Collection
The Show 17
New Hot Shots Golf
Dreams
Pyre
World of Warriors
Nex Machina
Knack 2
PaRappa HD
Starblood Arena

So these new demands, changing milestones, and payments held hostage, are they part of the original contract, or is there a clause which states MS has essentially carte blanche to amend the contact as they see fit?

Like I said - either PG self finances and makes money, gets a loan and makes money, or signs a better deal elsewhere to make money. If they can't do this, what they're doing isn't valuable enough. And corporate America (or anywhere) is rough to make it in. There aren't handouts or sentimental deals.

That's a different scenario, isn't it? At that point the 360 was so far ahead of PS3 in the US/UK they could afford to coast by and experiment with new peripherals. That won't be the case with the Scorpio, especially if MS wants to treat it as a fresh start for the Xbox One/Nw console release all together.
