Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

This thread has clearly drummed up a lot of feelings! It's already 147+ pages. That surprises me because the game looked like pants in August.

The game looked bad, imo, so it's not really surprising -- But people are big fans of Platinum, especially around here.

Sad for the people who put countless hours of work into the project.

They would certainly gain a lot of good will.

But what I'm not certain is whether Sony has the same level of social link with Kamiya as they have with Kojima. After all, Platinum never worked with them on any exclusive projects.

House should call his man Mark Cerny, the man whom social link power managed to make him get a PSOne dev kit in his first meeting with Sony, and upon being photographed with Yu Suzuki and Kojima has led to Sony affliated deals of various degrees.

=P

It's an unfortunate direction. Made the right pick at the beginning of the gen. PS4 = Singleplayer, for now at least. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if PC and Nintendo are the only bastions for SP by next generation. AAA Single player is doomed.

Shark Cards for everyone!!!

This is completely false.

I can't believe people still believe Microsoft is a good publisher to work for, even in the face of all the evidence throughout the years with their ineptitude with Ensemble Studios, ACES, FASA Studio, Press Play, and Lionhead. I've heard some stories about how poisonous Microsoft can be to game developers and the articles surrounding the closures of studios highlight how (sometimes) detrimental it can be. Look no further than the Eurogamer article on Lionhead or how abrupt and without warning with Press Play it was or how Microsoft's management culture destroyed FASA.

Bayonetta 1? Also on Xbox360 and PS3

Bayonetta 2? You're right

And W101.
But yeah, maybe I wasn't clear, I wasn't saying "have been nintendo exclusives", but saying that platinum games would be bad/worse by being on nintendo hardware is stupid.

MGR could have ran without issues on WiiU just as well.

Who said that? The person you previously quoted simply didn't want it to be restricted to a single platform.

No, Microsoft owns the IP so even if PG wanted to take it somewhere else they can't all the assets are property of MS.

Well technically, if the will between them and another publisher is there, they could start from scratch on a spiritual successor, but I really doubt that being the case.

Sorry but I don't listen to anything this arrogant arsehole says who thinks he's god's gift to gaming.

I remember him mouthing off about this before, but in reality, it was him who was making the extreme demands to MS and wanted to be put on a pedestal.

If you've watched that indie video game documentary, you'll know what I mean.

I'm sorry but the fact that he's an amazing game-designer isn't up for debate, his games speak for him. Also he's a very transparent person, you're mistaking "arrogance" for "actual talent".

Sorry about that then, but usually here when someone says "I don't want something relegated on Nintendo hardware", it means something else, especially with that wording.

True, but I think most people see some of the IPs Kamiya is well known for, such as Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, as being most closely associated with Playstation

Yeah but it feels like those series haven't been associated with Kamiya in a LONG time... Unlike with Kojima who owns all of it.

House should call his man Mark Cerny, the man whom social link power managed to make him get a PSOne dev kit in his first meeting with Sony, and upon being photographed with Yu Suzuki and Kojima has led to Sony affliated deals of various degrees.

Dude, imagine if we get a tweet of Kojima, Yu Suzuki, Yoshida, Mark Cerny and Andrew House out at a bar trying to cheer up Kamiya XD

The ONLY reasons I bought an X1 was Phantom Dust and Scalebound...fuck me right?
I wanted to post a while back but was in denial...man don't even know what to say. This genuinely kills anything Xbox for me if the talk about their new business model is true. Opinions and all but scale bound to me looked better in every showing than anything I've seen of Sea of Thieves. That game looks so boring and bland and very likely full of micro-transactions.

Owning the IP is not the same as owning the assets. This question cannot be fully answered without seeing the contract and probably speaking to a lawyer.

It's entirely possible that MS own the name "Scalebound" and other related properties, but the actual assets could be repurposed into a similar but legally distinct game. It's plausible that they'd need funding from someone else to actually finish it though.

Well it means it's exclusive to a specific console, and for someone who doesn't care much for gaming on PC it's probably a valid term.

There are people who don't care much for gaming on consoles and there are people who don't care much for gaming on handhelds. But they still have the option of doing so. They are all platforms to play games on. "Console exclusive" is just a marketing term.

I know of Star Fox being delayed although it should have probably been cancelled. I know of Transformers and TMNT being hot garbage. I know of W101 being a commercial failure. Not everything they do is great. No idea why doubting Platinum is out of the question.

why are you bringing up something that was not even in discussion

his point was NOT about quality, but the fact that PG could deliver the games in time, not miss milestones or deadlines, that was the reason those companies were brought out - they were hired to make games and made them, and they finished them. Quality is YMMV but the point is they made them, your argument was that "they could not finish in time" yet that is lacking in evidence

Anyone know what the game looked like behind closed doors? I remember hearing impressions were positive.

This was posted awhile ago.
During gamescom 2016 year they showed Scalebound in private showings.

They showed off something called "Dragon Link", something that they, as far as I know, haven't shown to the public ever and now possibly never will. Up until that point they only showed fairly basic combat that looked great but more in the vein of Dragon's Dogma and less like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. That's why many people used to Kamiya's games were pretty disappointed. And then they showed Dragon Link. It's a button you hold and then the camera switched into First Person Mode...and you controlled the dragon. So then you controlled the Dragon from Drew's perspective, which still looks HUGE because the camera doesn't zoom out but goes into first person and you fight against another huge Monster. And then they started comboing. They fluidly switched from Drew to the Dragon to Drew by holding or not holding the Dragon Link button.

Think the weapon system of DmC but instead of holding a button to switch to a certain weapon you hold a button to switch to a fucking dragon. So these two characters juggled that huge monkey enemy into the air with all the usual attacks and combos you know from Platinum Games only it was A HUGE GODDAMN DRAGON DOING THE COMBOS. There was a combo counter and a rating and everything. It was their direct answer to the "Where is the Platinum action?" question.

It looked fucking great and as far as I'm aware they have never released that footage, just as they never showed the HUGE array of customising options and RPG features.

I'm so mad about this cancellation. Goddamnit.
Sounds pretty great, shame MS didn't show the public.

If the only reasons you bought an XB1 were two unreleased games, what were you going to do with it before they were released? Why wouldn't you have waited?

Very unlikely. If Microsoft were the ones that were funding the production then chances are they own the assets created during the production. Thats how the vast majority of these sort of works play out.

I saw some people on Twitter with the hashtag #BringBackScalebound. I know it won't do nothing but at least shows that there is interest in the game.

I'm so sad, fucking ms.

People would rather ignore Microsoft's history because "there's always two side".

What a bunch of bullshit.

The main character looking like a generic western guy is definitely on MS.

I think the main character, at least for me, was so off putting as to sap any possible interest I'd have had in it. It's "what are they thinking?" levels of bad.

And, yeah, that could be MS' doing, I have no idea. Probably is.

I always backed up Xbox man but now I cant. Cancelling stuff like that. I wish I didn't support this console. Its just a damn Halo, Gears, and Forza on repeat. Makes me sick to say that.

When did I say he wasn't talented?

This game was meant to be out 2 years ago, looked awful when it was shown, was slated everytime it's shown and we've got a thread with more comments than all Scalebound threads combined?

The contract talk is embarrassing.

The main character looking like a generic western guy is definitely on MS.
Trump is MS' fault last I heard.

Seeing a lot of people shocked by these tweets. If this comes to pass, it really shouldn't shock anyone. This is the model that Microsoft CEO Nadella has been working on for years. He was in charge of cloud infrastructure, client services, and overall services. He was crucial in migrating Office from stand alone software to service-based subscription. Enterprise Windows 10 is more of a service than an OS at this point and there's no reason to suspect that they won't be doing the same thing with home versions later on in its lifespan, once the adoption rate is high enough to justify doing so.

Nadella has never really been a big "hardware" guy. Under his "embrace-and-expand" philosophy, he basically undermined ALL of Microsoft's attempts with Windows Phone by taking every major exclusive feature and rolling out similar software versions on Android and iOS (Office Mobile, OneDrive, Xbox, etc.). Migrating to services has been Nadella's entire plan since taking over after Ballmer.

Thank you for this very well informed post. Opened my eyes here.

Just have platinum and SE collaborate again and make drakengard 4, youko taro is there, just put kamiya as game director, and then he can use the ideas he wanted for scalebound on drakengard 4

Pretty natural fit if you ask me

Obviously speculating, but I kind of feel like if Scalebound had more positive buzz Microsoft would've been more lenient. Outside a contingent of Xbox owners, the community was hard on the game from the get go. Just like Fable Legends, It's kind of a self fulfilling prophecy; everyone said the game would bomb, and so Microsoft went "yeah you're right" and canceled it and people got angry anyway. Some folks have drawn correlations to Sony's properties but you have to remember games like The Last Guardian had and maintained enough consistent positive buzz to justify Sony not canning the product. Scalebound, Fable Legends (or any MS property for that matter, especially this generation) generally doesn't get that luxury.

This E3 is going to be interesting. As many have said already, they might have the most powerful console with Scorpio, but what's the point without good exclusive games? You know, a reason to buy the box instead of a PS4 or Switch.

Just for the reason why the 360 sold so well. To play the best looking and performing version of 3rd party games. You know the games people play most of the year.

But if they don't care about it they obviously won't play on it, as such, it's not an option for them.

Besides, someone who can't afford a capable PC probably won't care that the game's also on PC, he/she will only care the it's playable on this console, and not that, therefore this term is applicable to them.

The main character looking like a generic western guy is definitely on MS.

Can you please show me 5 generic western characters that look similar? Because I don't really see it, for me generic western guy looks more or less like this:

I really want to read the comments from people here who are insiders or know people closer to the situation... but 149 pages is tough to dig through man....
