Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

Not sad about its cancellation at all. When I here Platinum I think high paced and fun gameplay(Bayonetta, MG Rising, and now Nier Automata) and Scalebound under-delivered with every showing. Don't know why Kamiya couldn't give the game that kind of treatment.

at least I have nier to enjoy

Apparently the high paced part was the dragonlink system that they hadn't shown off to the public yet. Seems like combos were based on juggling back and forth between Drew and the dragon.

From what i saw, Joe didn't exactly melt down so much as concern super hard about the state of MS, and basically blame them implicitly as being the probable cause of why the game had issues and was ultimately canceled.

Considering he was a big fan of Platinum's previous output, its not hard to see where his stance is coming from
Yeah, "meltdown" was a bit too strong a word to use. He was very visibly upset.

Platinum is absolutely an elite developer.

Best console version of every 3rd party game. Yeah whats been good for the the goose should be good for the gander. Right?

I don't think better looking multiplats will drive sales unless devs really invest into making Scorpio games look their best. I would imagine devs prioritize were the players are, MS will likely have to provide devs incentive to do the extra legwork, right?

Would be a surprise, but strong word of mouth could help it.

Sea of Thieves is the most Twitch-friendly upcoming game MS has right now. I can see it being super successful especially with PC market.

Just think they may risk hanging themselves with a rope with a Windows Store only game.

Does anyone have a screen grab of Gies' tweet or the gist of what he said? (It's since been deleted). I can't even really imagine how he mangled together a pro MS/ positive stance in this instance.

And yet they didn't show any of this during the demos....

People could have been ecstatic for its release even more (hype was pretty barren before its cancellation) which would probably have convinced MS to keep production going.

sigh

Better looking multiplats isn't gonna drive sales because for that to happen you also need marketing deals imo, which MS lacks. Look at 2017, virtually every game is a Sony marketing and they'll all be plastered with "Best place to play" or some other similar tagline.

How is MS gonna advertise better looking multiplats when they don't have the marketing rights for any of them and probably won't even be allowed to mention the game like with Destiny 1 fragrance, or battlefront "choose the dark side or light side" controllers

May? How is it a question at this point?

I won't believe Crackdown can't be canceled at any moment until it's released. No game is safe.

They've shown like 10x less of Crackdown than Scalebound so it wouldn't be surprising if that gets cancelled too. Most probably get delayed into 2018.

The publisher blamed the developer for failing to adequately perform the responsibilities of a publisher, only after the game had released and the publisher had garnered the benefit of the over-the-top pre-launch hype they had done everything in their power to foster.

It was one of the most despicable acts I've seen in a long time of playing and following games.

Except Sony didn't publish NMS on pc.

They may already be hanged and not even know it, they are literally the only Dev MS has left that are not set to working on a single IP.

I'm surprised it was cancelled.

I agree it looked a tad ropey but games can come together at the end, and I thought it was a shoo-in for a Scorpio-enhanced version with some extra help from MS.

It's likely because MS asked for a large scale game with co op. It's hard to refine a game under those conditions. Apparently the team asked to scale back the game abit so they could get it running properly, but MS refused.

he was?
i remember him never giving bayonetta a proper review because he said it was just a game "to play with one hand" or something similiar.

His second point is kind of irrelevant because MS knew Platinums games didnt sell very well when they decided to hire them for Scalebound. So is MS a stupid publisher?

There's some really good stuff on there sometimes.

Recently, they just put out an outstanding on the history of FFVII.

Gies is just the reviews editor. he can be kind of a dick on twitter tho

Yea that stuff is usually done well. But when they do previews, reviews or try to spin news thats hot it comes off like they know more or their shit dont stink than people like Kotaku who actually break fucking stories.

It's hard not getting this mental image from when they started up saying " the best gaming site on the net" something along those lines when they were getting started for their PR. ANd then you see they were sponsored by Microsoft. yea polygon so prestigious and honest without any influence(rolls eyes).

That asshat is the reason I don't take anything from Polygon serious.

They are without a doubt the most smug, pretentious outlet I'v ever read.

Isn't MS a stockholder of Polygon?I was told so.

They sponsored their start up I believe.

Unless he was on the development team, he has literally no idea what he's talking about.

Yea, this guy has no fucking clue and even get's other people at polygon to think he's some kind of Jeff Gertsman or keighly in the industry. Jason Schrier fucking runs circles around this turd, and is probably one of the nicest guys I'v seen here on gaf talking in threads.

I'd love to see an exposé article on this at some point. Kamiya, with his 20+ years of experience, and Platinum, a company with a ten year history of signing contracts, delivering on time and working amicably with Sega, Konami, Nintendo, Activision and now Square-Enix, yet somehow it all goes pear-shaped as soon as they partner up with Microsoft.

So... what happened to Below?

Not many here are but they still have something to say about it all

Considering how this thread has gone it's probably the most the game itself has been discussed on this forum
Jup. A released mediocre scalebound wouldn't be interesting and talked about here at all.

A cancellation gets 200+ sites on gaf

The problem isn't really "Microsoft" so much as what Microsoft wanted though. Let's be real here. If Microsoft tapped them to make a character action title like they did with Team Ninja and Ninja Gaiden, this probably wouldn't have happened.

From the looks of things Microsoft wanted a big AAA action RPG blockbuster. A game with customization, open world elements, multiplayer, etc. Platinum Games felt they could deliver on that, or that it would at least be a worthwhile challenge to tackle.

Kamiya with his 20+ years of experience has never made a full fledged RPG. As a studio Platinum has never worked on the Xbox One. This was also JP's first game as a producer as far as I recall. None of this is a knock against them, but to present Scalebound as a normal project isn't the right way of looking at it. This was a risk for everyone.

You win

Ms paid for a movie about them or something like that

How you guys keep purposefully ignoring that people discuss more than the game is....
not beyond me.

Are you guys really surprised controversial things are discussed more? That's literally how everything works.
