Hard to speculate on what else Platinum might do on 2017. If it's just Nier and those two mobile games, that seems a little light for them, but completely understandable if Scalebound was gonna be 2017 as well.

Hoping to see a Switch event reveal.

I have edited the title and the OP. Glad Kamiya is okay. They're going to bounce back stronger than ever I think.
We all have to.

There's only one mobile game. And it's directed by motherfucking Yasumi Matsuno.

There's a PS4 action RPG based on a mobile game franchise, with Kenji Sato as game designer.

Granblue is not a mobile game, its a console game. Lost Order is a mobile game

Oh shit, what? Had no idea the mobile game had that credit, nor did I know they were working on another console game.

Alright, that's great to hear. Sounds like a solid year for Platinum.

On one hand I get that Kamiya was trying to say he's always going to put the fans and his hobby first by not taking time off for his mental health.

On the other hand I don't like that he made it seem like someone can be too good to seek help.

I thought maybe he was being sarcastic to imply that he's obviously mentally unwell given how angry he comes across on Twitter, but I'm probably wrong. Probably.

Granblue is next year, so is lost order.

I think Nier might be their only game this year :/

Platinum Games confirms cancellation..

We’re sorry to say that on January 9, 2017, Microsoft Studios announced the cancellation of Scalebound. We are very disappointed things ended up this way, especially since we know many of our fans were looking forward to this game as much as we were.

Going forward, we will strive to continue delivering high-quality games to you, starting with NieR:Automata in March, and including products like GRANBLUE FANTASY Project Re:Link and LOST ORDER in the future.

We will keep working hard to meet your expectations and we look forward to your continued support!

President and CEO
Kenichi Sato

Microsoft confirms cancellation:

After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for "Scalebound." We're working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including "Halo Wars 2," "Crackdown 3," "State of Decay 2," "Sea of Thieves" and other great experiences. "Cancelling one game and in the same breath trying to promote other games. Pretty heartless response. "
"That was one of the most heartless and corporate statement I have ever seen.

Fuck MS"
" that is? That's all they say about a game in dev for this long?!

Amazing. My heart sinks even more for the dev team."

Is Platinum really so loved on here..? or is Microsoft just not so much loved here?

Both statements are short and mentions upcoming games..

what is the difference?

Yes. You should see the threads where people want Platinum to develop everything.

Microsoft isn't in financial trouble if they cancel Scalebound. Platinum very well could. People were worried about a developer they love falling apart because of Microsoft pulling out. There's are sources that lean toward Microsoft being the problem in the relationship and they have a history of mismanagement and cancellations.

Not really trying to bring this up again but:

Microsoft has a history of fuckery when it comes to game cancellations, and there were some tweets from reputable sources suggesting that they were more at fault here. Platinum is a developer who has always been known to ship a game, no matter how long the deadline, and also has a passionate following on this board for their good video games.

This too:

Actually extremely much this

On one hand I get that Kamiya was trying to say he's always going to put the fans and his hobby first by not taking time off for his mental health.

On the other hand I don't like that he made it seem like someone can be too good to seek help.

That could be bad for future projects if potential investors think he is mentally unstable. I could see why he would to squash that if it isn't true.

He's saying that a project that fell through is always their fault, and that people who were anticipating the game are let down by default because he was the director. It doesn't mean they literally were the ones at fault for not being up to development or that they themselves were incompetent.

Can we say "fuck microsoft!" now? Somehow it doesn't sound as good as "fuck konami"

Yep, sounds like he's saying that it was Platinum fault.

Instead of playing the blame game, how about perceiving his comments as taking ownership for his fans, which I honestly admire. Much better than saying X or Y are to blame.

I do hope that the message does mean that there is some inkling of hope that Granblue and Lost Order will get translated and brought over.

Not what it says on wiki..well, atleast Platinum has two projects this year, even though as a mobile title, it generally moves away from what i love in Platinum games....

70% done, there will be more news early this year, why would it be a 2018 game?

Lost Order isn't a standard Platinum Games title anyway. I think it's probably closer to Infinite Space, where Platinum is helping get it made, but it's something outside their wheelhouse led and developed by people they are friends with. The actual programmer for Lost Order is being handled by Fuzz, a small studio founded by ex-S-E programmers who have worked with Matsuno before in Vagrant Story days. Platinum is handling some of the design and probably all (?) of the asset creation. Matsuno is directing. Yoshida is the art director. It's a party based strategy RPG with real time combat. Sounds good to me?

Hah, thanks for clarifying all that info for me.

I have not been close attention to it because its a mobile game and i don't even have a phone that could run it, if i was interested in playing games on my phone to begin with.

I hope that they at some point try and bring it over to console so i can see how it ends up cause i am definitely curious about that

PG´s is using the same or more space of the notification to apologize to their fans and people who were expecting to play the game. MS is stating that the game´s cancelled in an aseptic way and right after that promotes the upcoming releases. One reads like an apology while the other´s like "this stuff happened BUT LOOK HERE WE HAVE AWESOME GAMES COMING!". The tone of both is very different.

Glad to hear the stuff about him being in bad shape wasn't accurate.

Keep on keeping on I guess.

Looking forward to his next title, hopefully they have some backburner titles brewing.

Where do you get this obscure info from? Mind boggling.

They talked about the team when they first announced it. Most people didn't bother covering the news. Also, I'm insane.

If you're curious, they have a website: https://www.fuzz.co.jp

In their staff profiles you can see the two founders: https://www.fuzz.co.jp/officer.html

Both Yoshiki Kashitani and Tadashi Tsushima were programmers on Vagrant Story. Kashitani went on to become the lead programmer on FFXIII and FFXIII-2, and he also did game design on XIII-2 iirc. Kashitani is the main programmer for Lost Order, and he was the one representing Fuzz at the talk event when they first announced the game last year.

One is from the party that made the decision, the other is from the party that had the decision inflicted upon them.

Responding differently to each statement is perfectly logical.

On the other hand I don't like that he made it seem like someone can be too good to seek help.

I don't think he's saying that. Merely that he is a no matter what, rain or shine kinda guy.

Does that trivialize mental illness a bit? Sure. But I don't think that's his intent.

Read the first two sentences of the Platinum statement, and Kamiya's tweets.

try and find anything of a similar quality in the microsoft statement.

I get a general feeling of disappointment from both. I'm pretty sure both sides would have preferred the project be completed.

Microsoft's is general. Platinum's is profound and personal.

One is disappointed that it cannot fulfill its games schedule as advertised. The other is something bordering on shame.

vs

"We are very disappointed things ended up this way, especially since we know many of our fans were looking forward to this game as much as we were."

"I'm very sorry to everyone who was looking forward to this game."

"I'll work extra hard to never have to let you down like this again"

Really? Both kind of read the same to me.

Try looking for the word "sorry" in MS´s notice or anything remotely similar to an apology. It´s a robotic PR writeup in which they get over the bad stuff as quickly and shallowy as possible and immediately try to take attention from it with some good, unrelated news. PG´s notice uses the first paragraph exclusively to deal with the issue. This may have to do more with the cultural differences between a Japanese and USA-based company, but the tone´s clearly different.

Are we really going to sit here and pretend people responded differently to MS's message because of the wording?

People were full of piss n vinegar, after just hearing a title was cancelled, claims that Kamiya was having mental distress because of them and that they weren't paying them etc etc... rightly so.

that is why people responded the way they did.

Kamiyas response is heartfelt for sure, it was his lifelong dream pet project... but MS's wording is absolutely benign. It really didn't matter what they said, the reaction would've been the same, because it was just a continuation of what was coming before they even commented.
