Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

Project Spark was released, but then it was cancelled: Link

Phantom Dust has been cancelled, they're looking to start again, but so far they haven't announced anything. They did not even have a development team attached to it as of 2016. The version that was announced has been cancelled: Link

The list contains games that were announced as console exclusive at E3 2014, that's why The Witness and Ori are on it. Ori was announced for 360, but that version never came out.

Anyway, i updated the info about Project Spark and Phantom Dust to be more detailed on their current state:

I don't agree. The product is canned, that's all we need to know and all that's relevant to us. It's just morbid curiosity that wants us to know the details.

We don't need to point fingers because it really doesn't matter to us, no? The blame game is pointless unless you hear both sides of a story and hearing about the business dealings on both ends... Well, when has that ever happened?
 
The take out of this is they both really wanted this to happened and it didn't for reasons we'll probably never know. That's really it.

We know several telling things:
  • Game has been delayed 2 years
  • When the game was shown it looked rough each time and got slated
  • There's not been any media of the game recently, since E3

Ori 2 will probably be great, State of Decay 2 should be a safe bet and Sea of Thieves looks potentially a ton of fun, but aside from that I have little interest in any of their other upcoming games (especially their mainstay sequels). They just need more diversity in their line-up; especially at a time when they've got new hardware on the horizon. They need the smaller titles which might not make a profit but will provide variety to their offerings, like Gravity Rush or Bayonetta or Sly Cooper or Toy Soldiers or Kameo or Blue Dragon, and so on. This is their biggest failing IMO and its a shame because they did a really good job of this with the OG Xbox and the first half of the 360's life, but now all they care about is big hits out of the gate without trying to build a series up from smaller beginnings.
 
I think the simplest explanation is probably the right one, the game was a little too ambitious for XB1 hardware and they finally threw in the towel. With any luck maybe the concept will resurface on the next iteration of consoles.

Now its mostly discussions about who is at fault, favorite Japanese games and how Xbox 2017 looks dire.

Oh and a defence force for both sides. And those who just want to sling mud, mainly at Microsoft, haven't really seen anyone dissing Platinum.

I was never interested in the game really, but it was a high profile exclusive.

MS had a string of canceled games now on top of bullshit like the Master Chief Collection, and the xb1 has struggled all generation.

Yeah it's pretty sad. This was my most anticipated game for the Xbox. Looked forward to playing with friends on my PC.

Microsoft is not a charity either, so spending money and time on a game that looked like hot garbage is not beneficial to anyone. Platinum has a history of making mediocre unprofitable games, so trusting Platinum in making an appealing games to the masses should be hard. Let´s see how Nier Automata sells, because most of their previous games tanked hard.
 
The thing that hurts most about this isn't just losing an interesting and something we can all agree upon, a different game that the xbox portfolio so very much needs, but it's the fact that we'll probably never get a Platinum (exclusive) game on xbox ever again. That hurts even more. Not to mention this was Kamiya's dream project. I really think MS should have seen this one through.

Isn't the XB1 selling at the same rate, or higher, than the X360? I think it's a success. The only problem for MS is that next to the PS4, it looks like it's struggling.

Throwing money around isn't always the solution.

I think they spent too much money on MCC, rather, the project was overly ambitious. They hired a boatload of contractors in the hopes that they could make this Frankenstein of a game work.

Simply HAVING money doesn't mean that it shouldn't be spent wisely. If internal accounting deemed continuing to invest in Scalebound was unwise then those are the breaks. I don't think anyone at MS wants another MCC or QB situation... or another Scalebound situation.

I hope Platinum will be ok. I'm sure they'll find work. But they'll probably reign in their ambitions a bit too.

It's easy to say 'they should have released SOMETHING' without having any knowledge of what it would have taken to deliver a product worth shipping. When they released MCC they "released something". Look where they got them.

They can only pray that Nintendo's Switch is a complete bomb. Right now, the WiiU's effective lack of market presence has given them room to breathe. If the Switch is a hit then the PS4 is well positioned to hold it's own. I'm not so sure about XB1.

It was, they stopped reporting sale numbers ages ago. Most guesses put system sales at about 25-30 million. No way is it over 35m though.

Scalebound's cancelation is a big disappointment for me. Not just that the game is canceled, but also that this probably marks the end of any Japanese support for the Xbox as far as exclusive deals go.

The One has been my main console for quite some time, but I'm considering the switch to Playstation from here on out. Microsoft has now canceled three high profile projects that they advertised heavily and each time we seem to hear about their shitty treatment of these developers. I'd really like more information than what we have though.

Ohhh. I thought they stopped reporting because they looked bad next to PS4 numbers, not because they were falling behind the 360's pace. Thanks for the info!

I try not to get too hyped and excited about video game announcements based on CG trailers in case the game ends up being poor or cases like this happen.

Honestly, different markets - from my UK experience at least.

Nintendo needs huge third party support to get at Microsoft and Sony's base in any major way. In the UK, that means FIFA, Call of Duty, Battlefield / Battlefront, Red Dead Redemption 2 etc., as well as enough AAA releases to fill the gaps during the rest of the year. Otherwise, Nintendo consoles are the second consoles in a home, or bought for children (<12 years old).

Some people are very concerned for what this means for Platinum as a company. This could very well have ended in the closure of the studio.

Is it really that hard to grasp? C'mon son.

To be fair, there is no reason to downplay the impact either.
On NeoGaf, Scalebound was the 2nd most anticipated XB1 exclusive back in 2015 (behind Quantum Break - when SB was supposed to come out in 2016), and top most anticipated in 2016.

Could be, I just looked at sales numbers for Xbox 360 3 years after release (same place as we are now with Xbox One) and they had sold around 28 million worldwide

It's quite clear from your short posting history that you're a Playstation gamer. Yet you spent the majority of your short-lived junior-membership on Xbox threads, with a quite different posting stance than you would do in a Playstation thread.

You'll probably say that I'm projecting and all...but yeah.
