I'm watching that HBO Biopic about LBJ right now, and the man might've been racist on a personal level, but i'd challenge you to find a US politician who did more for the black man in the last 100 years. LBJ tried to drag men like Sessions kicking and screaming into the modern era, even if he might have agreed with them down in his heart.
Johnson was a man of action who didn't take any bullshit. Trump is a man of bullshit who only accidentally stumbles into action.

When it comes to a point that meeting with the President will grant you nothing, nothing, but a starring role in the latest spin for his alt-right army to use to talk down the people you represent ("See, Trump cares about black people! He just met with MLK's son! See, YOU'RE the real racists"); when all your presence does is HELP Trump and his racist army spread their message, then not only do you have the option to NOT meet with him, you have the moral obligation to not meet with him.
You don't grant the title respect. You grant the person holding it respect.
I mean really, what do y'all think MLK III could have said to Trump in that meeting that the black community and black legislators at large aren't shouting at Trump right now? He's heard it, and he has no ear to listen until you FORCE him to. Meeting him at Trump Tower is not making him listen. It's you playing the game he wants you to play.
He wasn't there for an earnest discussion, he was being used as a prop.

Seriously, what people don't seem to understand is that it's not that Trump is some young person who doesn't understand a lot of the issues and is looking to learn. He's a 70 year old who has been racist his entire life and socipathic narcissitic bully as well. He manipulates everyone around him to get what he ultimately wants.
I mean at best you might be able to convince him to do something by saying how much people will love him for it because his ego is all that matters. Of course one talk with the next party will have him change in his tune in 10 minutes.

It's absolutely counter productive for a Civil Rights spokesperson to meet with Donald Trump precisely during a time period when such a meeting gives him cover for his anti-Civil Rights comments and actions. Trump currently needs the appearance of being willing to work with the opposition, specifically minorities, even though he has no actual intention to do so. This is a indirect attack on John Lewis, and it's incredibly disappointing to see MLK's son allow himself to be used as a political heat sink for Trump's bullshit.

There's nothing to gain by a public meeting with him. With Trump, it's all about Trump and always will be.
It's true that we need progressive leaders to take every chance to get in republican ears.
The problem is that republicans tend to only make these gestures when they need to create a distraction from some horrible shit they're doing that would otherwise make the headlines. I don't think these kinds of meetings will make an appreciable difference.

This is never, ever going to happen, especially not when the invitation becomes "meet the President at the White House" instead of "meet Donald Trump at Trump Tower". I've said it before, and I'll say it again - four years is a long, long time. "Non-normalization" as a political goal will not succeed.
