Kanye West Isn’t “Traditionally American” Enough to Perform at Trump Inauguration

Why are people spinning this like it's some racist thing?

I'm insanely liberal and this just seems like the Trump team is just making an excuse, saying, "Kayne is too expensive and just not personally interested in doing a show for Trump"

People can just have their own personal reasons for not doing an event. To be honest, I doubt Kayne was clamoring to do a show for Trump anyway.

Some of you are acting as if he was BANNED from playing there...he probably doesn't give the single smallest shit about playing at Trump's inauguration.

"Traditionally American"

When people start qualifying what is "American" it is usually dog whistling, white and straight.

They're using code words. What is "Traditionally American?"

Look, I understand the optic, but if you break down a trade service, it doesn't make sense.

They're simply saying they are intentionally downplaying this event, when the reality is nobody wants to be close to this dumpster fire event to begin with.

amazing the meltdown over every little thing here.

could it be that Kanye's music isn't appropriate for the event? just like Ted Nugent's?

Maybe Kanye was playing 4D chess all along to get the gig but they still wouldn't risk it because he intended to go off script.

Some people have a great talent it seems at reading three sentences and understanding if the circumstances were because the people are racist.

Come on man.

Come on what? Are you seriously assuming the people setting up the event are deliberately banning black people from playing at his event?

People don't send in their applications to play at these events, they're asked to play and then they decline. "Traditionally American" is the cover up excuse for what I will assume for the hundreds of performers who declined to perform. If they were black, white, asian, whatever. I doubt they would WANT TO PERFORM FOR HIM ANYWAY BASED ON HIS PREVIOUS STATEMENTS...

Shit I would've actually watched if Kanye was in it.

She sure does.

Uh that was at Katy Perrys paint party, everyone had shit painted on them, Taylor went with Julianne Hough and wrote her initials TS on Julianne and Julliane wrote hers, JH ok Taylor. She took pics with a ton of people at that party. That dude apologised to her profusely after the pic got out and claims he didn't realize at the time what was painted on him.
Also Taylor said in her 2009 Rolling Stone cover she voted for Obama so I don't know why you associate her with Trump just because she's white?

Think about this, if this excuse of "Not traditionally American music" (about an American invented type of music no less) is what their PR answer was, try to imagine what their real, behind the scenes thoughts are.

They have literally invited rap artists. I dislike this administration as much as everyone else, but they have asked rappers to perform.

Err... What do you think 'Traditionally American' is code for?

Think of the crowd Trump attracts. What is their overall view on rap and black people in general? Just gotta connect the dots, here.

So minorities should not want to play based on previous racist statements from Trump and his team but we should assume this isn't one of them?

Ya'll are missing the fucking point in here, it's not just that Kanye is black, it's that Trump's team thinks saying Kanye doesn't qualify as a real traditional american (aka white person) is a better excuse than simply saying they couldn't get him.

Let that sink in for a second, being racist as fuck was the less problematic excuse to use to these people, and they know their base.

I'm debating that events like this are not scheduled with racist intent. Do you think all people who work at Fox News are actually all crazy republicans? You'd be surprised to find out how many of them are actually very liberal.

I'm saying that event planners sent out many MANY requests for artists, and nearly all of them, minus a bunch of shitty cover bands, forgettable 90s bands, and John Voigt, all declined the invite.

Lol. This sums up Trump's candidacy, campaign, cabinet and his future presidency right here.

Of course, they could have just said Kanye's style didn't fit with their plans or something else, but they had to say that they want "traditionally American", which means they wanted old white people music.

Come on, now.

I answered that already. It's a total PR move to deflect the idea that the event is a complete disaster based on their Z-tier performer list.

Think of the crowd Trump attracts. What is their overall view on rap and black people in general? Just gotta connect the dots, here.

He attracts a bunch of vile, white morons. Tell me something I don't know. Doesn't mean the event coordinators banned black people from performing. You can assume that if you like though.

Everyone knows that Country, Gospel, Blues, Jazz, and Rock and Roll are traditionally American music. Hip Hop is still a few Macklemores away from being traditional.

When has a republican ever failed to use 'traditional American' as a way to exclude other people? How are you parsing the phrase 'typical and traditional American?'

From this thread it's apparent that some people don't know that.

Unfortunately the Trump admin is using the term "traditional" here as a code-word for "White" when that's farthest from the truth.

Some of ya'll are dense as hell. You're not making some sort of super inciteful observation by saying they may be simply trying to shrug off the fact a lot of people outright refuse to peform by making up an excuse. It wouldn't be the first time Trump has lied to save face. It's the reason given that plays to his racist base and paints them even more as racist shit heads that marginalize black people and black culture. They could have said a million other things as a lie about not wanting Kanye but instead they pull this "Traditional American" bullshit.

Edit: Also 2Chainz said Trump tried to secure him as well, so if true his excuse is even more bullshit.

While I agree that I don't think Kanye's songs are suitable for a presidential inauguration, they chose the worst words possible as the excuse, and that's because that's what they're subconsciously thinking.

I mean, he could just cover a more suitable song, but they don't want him at all.

You apparently don't know a lot, it seems.

You immediately jumping to racism is wildly simplistic and shows a lack of understanding on how events are actually scheduled. Trump Team's PR statement however, is 150% an excuse to explain why the performers are shit.

I'll be too busy in DC protesting though, so doesn't matter to me who they invite...

When has a republican ever failed to use 'traditional American' as a way to exclude other people? How are you parsing the phrase 'typical and traditional American?'

Why are you assuming Kayne West, or anyone actually WANT to perform at his event? Are you not thinking for one second that maybe people wouldn't perform if they were even paid millions of dollars to? Trump's rhetoric chased off so many people. Everyone probably just declined.

Why are you arguing? Either he wasn't invited because he was black and they were emboldened enough to use the actual "traditional american" dog whistle or they couldn't get him anyway and they're using the 'traditional american (we don't want him because he's black)" dog whistle as a cover. Either way, they're complete assholes.

The guy saying this didn't mean to be a mean racist but his response (PR or not) did let racial bias come out. Where black culture is deemed other and not part of Shara Palin's "Real America". You need to consider the context of how conservatives often talk about "Real America" and "taking our county back" (from who?). Just because there may be a embarrassment reason they couldn't get a decent musical act doesn't mean the PR response they used to excuse that fact is laced with some racial and cutural baggage.

Also can't be havin' any of that Jazz or Blues music playing. Which means you can't have any Rock n' Roll playing. Can't be having any of the Classical stuff either, since that was all composed by a bunch of Europeans. No Folk music since most of that was passed down from English, Scottish, and Irish immigrants working in Appalachia.

Traditionally American is the mind boggling thing for me. Traditionally, we copied, modified, and created our 'American' sound by mashing a bunch of stuff together from all the different people that came to this country, and a lot of that was from people who were brought here against their will. To use the term 'Traditionally American' as an excuse for excluding a musician or a type of music is the thing that outright pisses me off.
