Real talk; I have a soft spot for Vega. I rolled my eyes hard during pre-release media as he seemed like such obvious focus tested pandering to the bro crowd, but throughout the game I found him pretty well characterized. His personality isn't particularly obnoxious, he has a decent backstory with legitimate reason to be tense with Shepard to begin with, and he offers a more grounded, sobering perspective into Alliance military. Something that Ashley and Kaiden don't really provide.
A bit boring maybe. And definitely not particularly memorable in design. But in all honesty I found him totally inoffensive and welcome in the third game.
BioWare cruelty; she's only into Krogan.
Agreed. Though I do find him memorable in how HUGE he looked in armor.
I just need to be a Krogan in the bedroom, baby.
I'm gonna play ME3 in english for the first time so maybe I'll like him more. His french dub was terrible so that may have played a part in my appreciation of his character (otherwise Mass Effect had one of the best dub ever, and I usually hate french dubs...).
Design wise I thought he was really out of place though, like he's been pulled from another game where ultra buff is the norm. He's the only human who's the size of a Krogan, it's kinda jarring.
Also, I watched the anime the other day, Paragon Lost, starring Vega as the main character. Well he was completely different from the game. Different attitude, different personnality. If BioWare continues with cross media stuff, I hope they'll manage it better. The Karpyshyn books were the only good stuff outside of the games (and still, I think Karpyshyn is way too gory in his descriptions, there are some scenes that kids should absolutely not read, wtf Drew).

Yeah. There are some good ideas near the end but damn it was boring. Marine action stuff for an hour and a half, with terrible animation and some bad voice acting.

Yep, and he does mention it to Shepard during their goofily animated fistcuffs after first arriving on the Normandy. Long story short, during the events of Mass Effect 2 he was working as part of a squad to save abducted colonists from the Collectors. During the mission they secured essential data that could be used to address the Collector threat (and I think linked them to Reapers), but it couldn't be retrieved in time without sacrificing the colonist extraction. He chose the former, losing the colonists and extracting the data, but shortly after returning the data Shepard's crew wiped out the Collectors, essentially making his choice redundant.
His bitter about it, for good reason. And I guess in retrospect that was foreshadowing for just how much your choices mattered in Mass Effect 3.
I liked that part. Basically we see him making the Paragon choice, we see how it pans out, and then "oh wait, reload save", and he picks the Renegade option. So really, Paragon lost.

On the topic of character design a bunch of your squad in Mass Effect: Andromeda so far is looking to betray the clean, symmetrical designs that the Mass Effect series has done so well.
Drack is the worst offender with the dumb bones around his armour. He'd look great without them and already has the cool facial spikes to set himself apart from other Krogan. I realllllllllllly hope we get some kind of alternate costume that gives him normal looking gear.
I want more nuance like Mordin's missing Salarian head-fringe and Wrex's facial scar and less wankery like Jack's tattoos and Zaeed's weird half and half armour.

I watched Paragon Lost before I played the game, so my perspective of Vega was changed in the matter of a couple hours, as during pre-release build-up I was 100% against his inclusion as he seemed boring, generic and 'dude-broish' (although that's now a obsolete term).
His in-game tussle with Shepard in the docking bay was really well done, brought out the feels from the film.
If anyone hasn't watched the anime film yet, it's worth it I reckon, pretty good bit of story.

But yeah I agree. I'm already seeing more of the "I can't wait to fuck the Turian!" type stuff on Tumblr, for example, and it comes across as weird when we don't even know the characters (plus the intensity/obsession with sex in general).

I feel pretty similar to be honest, but liken it to a BioWare problem rather than the simple fact there's sex and nudity in the game. Waifu/shipping culture in general come across as oddly possessive and creepy. Romances can comfortably be a part of any engaging narrative arc, but sometimes BioWare's feel excessively pandering and fail to develop in an organic way.
They're getting better with Mass Effect though, I think, mainly due to stronger character dynamics. Inquisition has some utterly atrocious romance dialogue, with some lines seemingly penned by someone who's never actually had romantic relations.
I do wish the romance arcs were a bit more complicated though, and if it were me writing them I'd make some characters just totally unwilling to commit to a relationship even if you've slept with them. Character writing in interactive games, especially RPGs, is always at its strongest to me when the NPCs don't exist entirely to serve the player. Romance in games unfortunately is so much that; you basically get to pick from your harem who you want and if you click the right dialogue you're guaranteed to get them.
Add in some heartbreak with a dash of tragedy. Don't always give the player exactly what they want. Get them dumped. Have them chase dead ends. Imbue characters with the illusion of autonomy and individuality.

There's nothing wrong with liking sex, I think it's more what EatChildren said about shipping culture or like I mentioned earlier how people abuse devs when they don't write a romance to their specifications. I see so many instances of people planning to romance a character before they even know anything about the character and once they find out they can't romance them, the abuse starts. Tbh if you plan your entire romance before you get your hands on the game you deserve to be disappointed, but that's an issue I see more on Tumblr (or on BSN, but that's not officially around anymore).
Regarding romances, I guess according to devs there will be flings/people not interested in anything other than hooking up so that should satisfy some people's play style. And yeah, DA:I had some weird romance moments, though I never romanced anyone other than Solas and just watched the others in YouTube videos. Solas's romance was so good and you do get dumped and you have no choice. There isn't a sex scene but the romance is so strong that you don't need it. If they write more romances that way, that'd be great. It was an improvement in terms of complexity of emotions.
