From a platform provider and developer point of view, the back forward model represents less risk, so I'd say it was still up in the air until they say something.

just in terms of marketing presentation I guess? I don't think a console released on 2017 makes a big enough jump in tech from a console released in 2013, but if this is basically that, "what a console would be if released in 2017", that implies MS wants a large portion of the audience to embrace Scorpio and it isn't really just a 4K option like Pro is so your PS4 doesn't feel outdated so fast once you get a new TV.
Feels more like a reset button in terms of presentation and marketing etc..but it's b/c and most of the games should work across X1 & Scorpio outside of VR, so its not really a reset hardware speaking.

No one is making a mistake here, both scenarios involve assuming plans based on what little information we know in the present. As of right now, Sony's approach seems to suggest that PS5 games will not work on PS4. Microsoft's approach seems to suggest that Scorpio 2 games would work on Scorpio 1 "if" they continue using the same model that they're about to introduce.
Unless they're some piece of information I'm missing here, there's no evidence to suggest anything different.
Ah, I get what you're saying and I definitely agree. Marketing-wise, I think their big push will be on Scorpio with a side-mention that Xbox One S is super cheap now and plays games that will work on Scorpio when you upgrade. Hardware-wise we both seem to agree that no "reset" is happening. Good stuff!

Their only option to me is to make it look like tiers in presentation. Scorpio on paper would be the ultra settings and XB1, medium settings for any games out or coming out. I don't see how else they frame it. Can't leave XB1 behind, but need to entice not only new gamers with the mantra of "most powerful console", but also lure XB1 owners. Hey maybe you're good for now but don't these games look juicier on the new one? Go ahead and save up you good looking sonofabitch, you.

What I mean by that is, I'm wondering about the possibilities for third party manufacturers (Dell, Asus etc.) being able to build their own Xbox (which has been discussed to death), but always of the last gen or earlier - so MS always have the top spec console. The way the ecosystem is designed is such that there isn't a lack of new games for the older console, so their focus could be on cheaper (yet still relevant) devices in the Xbox family. Someone could possibly take a punt on a mobile Xbox, with access to the same library, without MS having to take the risk.

So you're saying every time a new Xbox comes out, then the predecessor Xbox is now the common denominator for which games have to be compatible for?
Xbox One- denominator for Scorpio
Scorpio- new denominator for Scorpio 2
Scorpio 2- new denominator for Scorpio 3

No one knows that will happen that far into the future, but this is definitely what you can imply based on their approach with Scorpio.

I am very excited by this news. I am betting on Scorpio upgrades for both games I currently own and games I will purchase soon will be significant. Combined with the likelihood of greater power than the Pro, I am expecting the Scorpio to be the best option in the coming year for me. Great to see Phil being upbeat about it.

PS. There is no Scorpio games (exceto for some VRs)... it is Xbox One games and you can play on Xbox One or Scorpio.

- First of all, you can't rely on saying true 4k because it means nothing.
- You can't rely on HDR because no one will notice it via youtube. Also it requires a new TV.
- The differences with xbox one games should be more than just resolution, it should show something like middle settings vs high settings. Also, viable on 1080 TVs
- You will need new games no shown before, Crackdown may do the trick but Forza won't because racing doesn't appeal to all and there is already Forza Apex.
- The console needs to have some new system features not posible on X1. Something like mods at a system level, maybe a curated mods store too.
- Fix X1 problems like installation times
- Remember most xbox enthusiast more likely already have an external storage unit so don't go wild witha huge internal HDD.
- Not everyone is interested in VR and given that is already for cheaper on PS4, it won't be a killer feature for the console.

I think it's a difference in how each company operates. Sony restricts software from utilizing Pro hardware unless there's a patch, with Cerny, as you stated above, having concerns about compatibility. Xbox One S is more powerful than Xbox One, and MS lets any game have access to that power, without a patch. Spencer has said in the past that Scorpio will work in a similar manner, providing benefits even to games which are not formerly patched for it, including Xbox 360 BC games.
While there may be some challenges, I think it's safe to expect MS engineers are motivated and capable to ensure BC and forward compatibility for their platforms.
I think it's unreasonable to expect games to continue working on XB1 in perpetuity. I think, like PC/mobile, there will be a point where *mandatory* support for Xbox One is no longer required, perhaps MS internally has a date pegged, but for not we can only speculate how that will work out. My guess would be when the Scorpio successor is released, mandatory support for Xbox One is no longer required - MS would get a shifting 2 console paradigm going forward, High (Scorpio) and Low (Xbox One).
It's pretty funny that Penello's job has gone from publicly pretending that the Xbone wasn't about 30% less powerful than the PS4, to now having to promote the fact that the Scorpio will be about 30% more powerful than the PS4 Pro.

I dont understand why, for enthusiast console they just leave a large drive bay that can fit a 2.5 inch with enough space (at least 15 mm).
That way, you could put in whatever you want, supplied HD is a waste.

We actually don't know that.
If Microsoft moves to full integration of Windows 10+ on all their hardware from the Xbox One forward, they would simply have games developed as if they're PC games. Profiles for games would allow Low-Ultra settings (that auto default) dependent on the hardware.
Now I don't "think" that will happen, but it's an option/possibility.
It wouldn't surprise me if they move to single game development with straight PC/Console integration. Basically just PCs with a closed OS(s).

Not for all games.
The main difference is that on Xbox side the consoles supported will be on a per game basis.
For instance, late last year xbone received a port from awesomenauts. That's a game 360 would have no trouble running, in fact the game is available to 360, but it's a separate version that stopped being updated. Stuff like this won't happen again.

I don't have any confidence is Sony building systems that scale well so I doubt it. PSN is a creaky mess and PS3 was a nightmare to work with. Also tge way PS4Pro handles PS4 games with "modes" isn't a implementation id like MS to use with Scorpio, seems based on Phil's comments that it'll be more graceful like how Xbox S handles Xbox One games.
With their main market switching to "Orange" "HUGE!" and "Grabbing things by the.,.."
It's going to be tacky as heck and covered in Chrome.
I strongly doubt this is the case. Scorpio will bridge generations- back compatible with xbox one games, but will become the baseline hardware when ps5/xb2 come out.

What if Project Scorpio doesn't even exist?! Microsoft gave us these specs that sounded nice on paper and hadn't even started work on the "Project" yet.
