PS4 firmware 4.50 add Boost Mode for PS4 Pro.

Seriously, how was this not available from day one with the Pro?

Microsoft better learn from this and have a boost mode of their own on launch day for the Scorpio.

Simple. Sony had reservations about implementing it due to unforeseen circumstances.. Obviously they tested it further and came to the conclusion that it was worth letting users brute force the machine, and toggle it if there were any issues.

MS likely dont even have a base mode, their abstraction layer is higher. That's why Xbox 1 S already did the same thing

Games that have dynamic performance levels will benefit from the faster clock(s). If they scale resolution to hit other targets then there should be a resolution benefit. If framerates are uncapped or hit levels below their targets (30/60) there should be a frame rate benefit. More complex capability lookups or probes might take advantage of extra compute units - i.e. games that find these resources (for cross platform purposes most likely) by unofficial or accidental means.

It's probably not quite as common these days that the programmers or underlying tools assume too much about things like bus speeds and clock rates. I wouldn't expect much if any weirdness from the mode being enabled all the time, but the concern is valid and will probably pop up in the rarest of cases.

I have only tried Dark Souls 3 in boost mode but it does feel smoother, especially distant animations.

Yup. Why risk bad news right at the launch of a new console? It's not like they could put ship the console with a beta! This way they have enough of an installed base to get some people opting into testing it with a wide range of titles and can find out before the public launch if there are any serious issues with titles people are still playing.

That's a good point. What's the technical reason for this? I don't understand this abstraction layer concept.

If boost mode there day 1 you won't as many Pro patch.

But improving the entire library is much more impactful than a drip feed of Pro enhanced patches.

Why couldn't they test Boost mode before the Pro launch, tho? Were they really in a time crunch? Not enough resources? To me this makes a huge difference in my motivation to purchase. Too bad it wasn't there at launch.

Look at it from this perspective:

You're launching a new console concept.
You want it to be 100% compatible with all your existing library.
Don't forget, any compt issues at Pro launch would have looked really bad.

Being conservative at launch isn't a bad thing. The option now exists for those who want to use it. Or will in a few weeks.

- pt demo: boost mode does feel a little smoother switching back and forth.
- Limbo: boost mode feels a little smoother to my eyes
- Daylight: boost mode definitely improves the framerate over the original mode (this game's framerate was a mess)
- final fantasy episode duscae: boost mode seems less jittery than the original.

Gonna see about killzone in a little bit.
What Limbo is a locked 60. You've got some placebo effect there.

Thanks! I'll wait until E3 when they announce the patch (available now) along with Demon Souls RM.

Everybody's gone to the rapture feels better in spots and i think panning the camera feels better. I wish I could a and b without having to restart the game.

Still feels spotty due to the unlocked framerate. Less of an issue in this game though cuz you're just taking a casual stroll.

So is bloodborne better or not?
Bloodborne is a lot better in places where the framerate was actually tanking, like old Yarnham etc. In those places, fps no longer drops, there are videos of such stress scenes, you can see them. Frame pacing is not getting corrected using boost mode.

Wish boost mode also have forced 16x af since resolution is kept the same and delta color compression should give it a lot of extra bandwidth?

Doesn't matter. That's not the kind of thing you can just switch on for every game - each title has a different implementation of AA, AF, etc.

I preordered my Pro expecting it to work like this from the start, I was very disappointed when they said it would work in basic mode for old games.

My question is: Which big publisher game gets killed by boost mode for Sony to make it an optional toggle?

Probably none.

It's optional because Sony doesn't want the risk of any game not working properly on boost mode. That's why initially there wasn't any kind of boost mode on the Pro. I guess now they smarted up and realized they could offer it as a toggle.
