I have an issue. I tend to eat more than I need to. I just want some advice, how can I stop eating more than I have to? I've received some comments lately that I'm getting fatter. I think I'm at the precipice of becoming too fat. I used to weigh 225lbs. I'm probably closer to 235-240 by now. I must admit though, I haven't weighed myself in a very long time. What advice can you guys give me so that I start exercising and start eating less?

Should I run or use my mountain bike? What would give me more weight loss results?

Eat slower and don't drink anything while eating. Do stuff to distract yourself while you eat- play with your phone or something

If it's more that you are just eating garbage instead of just eating too much, try to get as much protien in your diet as possible. Drink Protein shakes in the morning or afternoon and you will be less hungry throught the day

Are you mostly eating garbage, or is it just a matter of portion control? That is honestly the hardest part of losing weight IMO. It takes a lot of resolve but you will see results and it gets easier with time.

Running outside is the best. Eff the stationary bike unless there is really inclement weather.

Build up to running 45 minutes. Find a pace that you think you will be able to keep going the whole way. If you have to walk, then walk, but get to that 45 minutes. Do that 3 times a week.

You're gonna hate it for a few weeks, but it will get easier.

Cut down massively on fast food because it's designed to not make you feel full, hence why your hunger center in the brain keeps on getting triggered to eat more.

Eat more food with fiber (fruits, veggies, beans, etc). That's one easy way to not eat as much.

Counting calories works for me.

I second this. I have also found in my experience that planning out meals helps me watch what I am eating versus going out to eating or deciding what's for dinner while I am buying groceries. Depending on what you are eating, it might be best to no longer buy it if it's something like potato chips or cookies. I am a stress/bored eater so going cold turnkey with some products help me get my weight down.

Maintain a Food log( tons of apps out there like 'my fitness pal'). Your conscience will fat shame you into eating less. Worked for me.

Save your knees and go mountain biking.

Eat more filling food, get some oats in you for breakfast, they last more than most things or eggs. Watch what you're eating for main meals, packaged, takeout meals will always make you pile on the pounds over making your own meals from scratch. Don't snack shit food, cut that out and you've won half the battle, rest is stay active, even walking will do if you can't do something else. Don't go cold turkey, still enjoy something now and then but don't go overboard.

The main thing is you need to stop stuffing yourself. It takes a while to really feel what you've eaten in your stomach, so if you just inhale food, chances are you'll end up feeling bloated.

Eat slower, and take smaller bites. And drink more water. It sounds crazy, but a lot of people who think they're hungry are actually just thirsty. Try to drink at least three liters of water a day.

As far as weight loss, if that's your goal, just count calories. There are 3500 calories in every pound of fat. So you need to be at a caloric deficit for the day to lose weight. If you wear those heart-rate monitors, you can figure out your basal metabolic rate for burning calories pretty easily, and from there, it's just a matter of sticking to your calorie allotment for the day.

Depending on your height, if you just wanna drop pounds, I'd recommend trying a 1500 cal/day diet. It's difficult, but you WILL lose weight, and fairly quickly. I've done this in the past and lost 15 pounds in a month with just basic exercise. Speaking of, running is good, biking is also good (though you have to bike a lot more to get the same results as running). If you have a gym membership, rowing is great, too (since it engages a lot of muscle groups and builds strength as well as being a good cardio workout).

Anywho, good luck! Recognizing the issue and making a choice to remedy it is a great first step.

I agree with all of this, as well.

People often confuse thirst for hunger. If you feel hungry, try drinking a glass of water and waiting 10 minutes before getting food.

Your body adapts to how much you are eating each day. If you can eat less for about 3 days or so it will start getting much easier. But you sort of have to grit your teeth for the first few days and try to resist hunger.

Cut down on food that are high in simple carbohydrates (sugar, starch). Fats will make you feel full faster and proteins and complex carbs will make you feel full longer.

Have you tried fasting? I noticed over time, my appetite is significantly lower than it used to be. Of course it takes time though, just don't overeat after your fast.

Healthy snacks at regular intervals during the day will stop you from eating too much during your meals. Alternatively you can fill up on water

running, by far.

Unless you do so some real mountain biking or drive like 200km per week.

And I think that's by far the best solution..plus it's healthier than just eating less. Not to mention that running (outside, treadmills suck) is tons of fun and good for your psyche as well. I'd also recommend using some running app, they're extremely motivating.

If you're really overweight though make sure to start very slowly to not put too much stress on your body at first.

Running outside is the best. Eff the stationary bike unless there is really inclement weather.

yep

Mountain biking!! It helped me lose and keep of about 70 lbs. I tried running but that just injures my knees. Riding 2-3 times a week (5-6 miles each time) can be a hell of a workout and a blast.
I did also make the critical change in diet, trying to eat more healthily and I switched to a more vegetarian based diet. It was lower in fat and I found that I had to actually eat more to get that full feeling. However if done right you still take in less calories.

Remember it will take time but keep at it.

running with that weight might not be a good idea if you haven't been doing it for a while, you need to take it slow, because it's easy to overdo it and hurt yourself

I've never been overweight, but when I saw I was starting to gain weight I found calorie counting didnt work for me. What did was directly cutting out processed sugars, specifically sodas, snacks and anything that had more than 2 grams of sugar on its lable. Also reducing my bread intake (basically moving more to a paleo style diet).

The weight just shed straight off. 15 lbs in 30 days (now at 20lbs and exactly where i want to be).

For some reason sugar was making me want to eat more. Cutting it reduced my cravings. Now standard meals fill me up. I dont feel hangry anymore.

These are good points.

Once you get over the initial shock of actually using your body, you will come to love the whole experience of running. You get to explore the world, you get sunlight (don't forget the sunscreen), you see fit people and might make new friends or even find a mentor.

And yes, a running app can help quite a bit. Almost makes it a game, so you can try to beat your high score.

Take small bites, and put your knife/fork/spoon or food (if its sandwich or a pizza) down between bites, and pick it up again for the next bite.

You need to understand what real hunger is in order to avoid overeating. Cut back greatly on anything sweet - remove it from your household so you don't think about it. Then make sure you eat protein rich foods to curb real hunger. Seriously, once your able to distinguish the feeling of real hunger, you'll be able to more easily diet. A lot of what you think if hunger is simply you not giving your body time to process just how much you ate / you're actually craving something(this isn't hunger) / or you're actually thirsty.

As for exercise, I find the best and easiest method is to find a cardio exercise you enjoy doing, and also doing full body workouts with weights(weight lifting). The combination of the two, along with proper diet(simply eating below your caloric daily limit with whatever foods you want) should set you up for success.

Also, a few extra tips - start learning exactly how much your body needs in calories to maintain(many sites to give you that info) then underestimate whatever number they give you to be safe and eat ~250 below that. Ex. Daily req is 2000 cals according to website, I will assume that my limit is actually 1800 and I will eat 1550 daily to lose weight. Doing this, while educating yourself on how many calories is in everything you eat(not hard at all) allows you to have a variety of foods you wouldn't expect to eat while losing weight. Eventually you'll start to feel fuller faster and will be physically unable to eat the quantities you used to, depending on how severe your overeating is,

Count calories for just one full week without cheating. You don't have to keep doing it forever, you just need to realize which foods are calorie bombs and which ones aren't.

You're probably eating lots of pre-processed garbage that doesn't fill you up but is incredibly dense calorie-wise. You need to wisen up on what you eat, not necessarily how much you eat.

By doing this I have a whole new selection of foods that I don't ever want to touch again because of how unfulfilling they are but disgustingly high-caloric. I also found a lot of new foods that are fantastic to eat and very low in calories.

Change the type of food you eat. If you're faced with lean meat like chicken or turkey breasts, vegetables, fruits and complex carbs, they will take longer time for you to complete your meals, and they tend to keep hunger at bay for longer period of time.

You are going to get a lot of different answers. Personally I say cut as much sugar as you can from your diet and replaced it with as many vegetables as you can. Cause simple rules like this are easier to follow than counting numbers or other tricks.

To answer some questions, I am eating out more often. Such as eating at Chipotle, Domino's Pizza, local kabob food places, etc. That plus I am drinking more soda. I just don't have the power to stop and I don't know why.

I'll take this opportunity to ask this as well. You guys know Penn from Penn and Teller the magicians? He used to weigh a lot and he started eating only potatoes for 2 weeks. Basically any time he got hungry the only thing he would eat is an entire potato with nothing more than the water he used to boil it. Do you guys think this is a good idea to do for myself? So basically eat and drink nothing but water and a potato when I'm hungry. I'll post the video

https://youtu.be/NelIXCuuSZ0

TL:DW he eats potatoes only and drinks water to "reset" his appetite and taste buds and as a result he is able to eat less and "whatever he wants" meaning his appetite changed. So he tends to eat less meat and has become more vegiterian.

Count calories and put a real hard cap on your average through the week or max through the week. It's the best way to learn what's in food and also to possibly break you of the soda habit. Once you realize a soda is keeping you from food that might keep you full longer you'll ditch it.

Counting calories worked for me. But here is a warning, don't eyeball that shit. Get an app, notebook or whatever and keep adding the numbers for everything you consume. It's easy to slack if you don't have the actual amount on hand to judge if it's wise to eat or not.

Portion things out in advance and cut out mid-meal snacking. Be mindful of how much you're consuming; keeping a log with everything you eat and drink is helpful since you can do daily tallies and see how much mid-meal snacking or beverages are contributing to your calorie intake. Try to replace at least one meal a day with a big salad; it's a great way to get more fiber in your diet and it's typically a lot fewer calories than other foods (provided you don't drown it in ranch).

These diets boils down to calorie count down the line. You could eat either McDonald, bananas, grapes, celery for 2 weeks and still lose weight.

It all boils down to if you have enough self restraint to stick to eating a potato for 2 weeks. I mean intermittent-fasting is a great way to lose weight, but not everyone can do it. But yes, they do ''work''.

I like your post - but isn't 3 litres a lot of water?

On a good day, I usually end up drinking 1-2 litres + some coffee mostly

Should I be upping my water intake? I feel like I would be having a lot of piss breaks :(

imho all of these diets are more or less bullshit and to some extent very detrimental to your health.

I really don't understand why so many people are so reluctant to exercise/work out (running takes like half an hour maybe?) instead of torturing themselves with these crazy diets.

Cut back on weed if you smoke.

It's actually really weird, but eating fruit or vegetables while high really helps me cut back on high-calorie stuff. When I smoke I cut up some celery, carrots, apples and oranges as a snack.

Seconded.

I count my calories by slotting in excercise so that I can have bigger breakfasts ^^

Basically, do I want the sausage, bacon, eggs and fried hash? Welp, gonna have to put on a few podcasts and bike ten miles! (Podcasts help so much, it's crazy. That and audiobooks.)

For me, it was all about data.

Get a Fitbit, track your food intake, track your water intake and weight and steps and base metabolic rate. It's easy if you have a fitness tracker device and somehow, having the data available, I found that to be extremely motivating. Charts! Watching your resting heart rate lower week after week, seeing improvements in diet and pace, etc.

Having data allowed me to make a bunch of structural and mental changes that were challenging, before. Like I used to regret having to run an errand or walk the dog sometimes; now I go out of my way to do extra walks because you can literally see the calories it is earning you, if you have a tracker and some good phone apps.

in fact I did a great many of the suggestions above based on data.. well except

Cut back on weed if you smoke.

.. this. I'm not a maniac. (Well ok, am using the PAX more since running.)

the easiest thing to do is drop soda altogether and get 10k steps a day. those 2 things alone will get you a big improvement.

I like your post - but isn't 3 litres a lot of water?
Yes it is. I aim for 2L, and you don't actually need it like a lot of folks say you do. There is something to the hunger mechanism but mostly I do it so I don't drink something worse. And again, Fitbit will reward me with a shiny star if I drink 2L of water, so I do it, because I enjoy being gamified, apparently.

Right?! And exercise has so many other benefits than mere fat loss. It's one of the best things you can do, bar none.

No.

The short and easy answer here is just this. The key to weight loss is really just calories in vs calories burned. Using some trick diet won't help solve your eating habits, you'll just gain it all back once you go off the neat trick diet. "Dieting" in general is only temporary, so one should only expect temporary results.

In order to make long term changes, you need a change in lifestyle as a whole. I would suggest this by injecting some kind of exercise into your week 2-3 times a week, even if only 30 minutes. Then cut your calories a lot for ~3 months to cut the fat, say 1400 calories a day. That will be hard to do every day for 3 months but you'll probably lose 20lbs easily. Once the weight is off, your new exercise habit should be routine, so bring your calorie intake back up to say ~2000/day and just maintain.

Allow yourself cheat days but no more than 1 per week, that'll keep your metabolism on edge. When you binge on food or drinks do so as the exception to the rule, not the standard.

When/If you do all of the above, you'll notice you feel better, sleep better and should get addicted to that feeling. This feeling is usually what drives people to keep going, and stay healthy.

Regular exercise - even if it's just going for a long walk. Staying active keeps your body balanced.
Drink more water and stay hydrated. Water should be your main choice of drink.
Avoid eating out/relying on convenience food. Cook for yourself.
Cut saturates/carbs in your diet and watch your caloric intake.

If you really want to lose weight, like really want to, then it's very simple. Note I said simple, not easy. First thing you gotta do is find out your TDEE (How any calories you need to maintain your bodyweight). I would recommend weighing yourself, as unpleasant as that might sound having to face the real numbers, before calculating your TDEE as more than likely you're underestimating how fat you are and are probably bigger than 235-240. The number this spits out is an estimate, a pretty good one, but can vary by 100-200 calories based on the individual (naturally high or slow metabolism is a myth, at least in the extremes people normally discuss it). It is recommended that you try not to lose more than 2 pounds a week on average, anything more than that and your can get some really bad effects as you're not eating enough and similarly will be more likely to lose musclemass as your body will cannibalize your muscles for energy. 1 pound of fat lost a week requires a weekly caloric deficit of 3,500 calories, or about 500 calories a day. I emphasize weekly because that is what matters, day to day fluctuations can happen, some days you eat more, some you eat less, but if you aim for a weekly deficit you'll be fine.

Now that you know how many calories you need, you need to actually figure out the amount of calories in those foods. I do this using a calorie tracker, my choice being MyFinessPal but there are others as well, google around and find something you like. I track my food every single day on this website, and that's the real key, tracking EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. even if i'm being a fat fatty and over eat, I still track, even if seeing how much I overate makes me feel like absolute shit, I do my best to make up for it the next day, or the next few days, or the next few weeks. Consistency and keeping yourself honest are the key to being successful. I don't let bad days keep me off track, I know Im going for that weekly deficit.

Here's the thing, this works, fat loss is simple, burn more calories than you eat in a day. It's really that simple. Dealing with all the shit trying to achieve that is the hard part, and that very much relies on the individual. Over the past two years I've lost 135 pounds, and I'm still losing. This works. It's not a diet, it's not an exercise program, it's a change in the relationship that you have with food. I have given you the very basic tools to tackle weight loss, if you would like to hear what specifically I have done just let me know, but keep in mind what I have done, and do, might not be the right way for you. Do whatever you need to to maintain a caloric deficit and it won't matter how you do it, as long as you do it safely and are consistent.

You have tons of great advice already in this thread, pick some of it and follow it, not this potatoe bullshit.

Honestly though, you already know what to do and your being stubborn. Stop eating out, stop eating shit, stop drinking shit. You are addicted to Soda, I was too, I get it, but just stop buying it, anytime your mind wants a treat, drink some water. Mark off how many days its been sense your last soda on a calender, take pride in it. Sugar is an addictive substance, think of it as a drug and take pride in ending the addiction.

Rather than running I recommend buying a jump rope and learning how to skip its a lot more fun imo and also burn calories faster than running.

As for eating you have to focus on foods that are more filling in nature and drink more water, also cut sugar from your diet completely unless its from fruits.
