The worst thing that can happen to the party is dealing with 8 years of this. Either popular support for them will go down with Trump's eventually, or they'll be in a position where after serving his full term they'll have to stick with his insane policies or risk losing their base.

Not only is there no protocol, there's no constitutional mechanism. Without an amendment, there is 100% no legal way to even call such an election.
Not everyone in the line of succession would be tainted by this if it exploded. It would likely fall somewhere in that line. Ryan does seem like the likely candidate if somehow Pence got blowback too.

For all those saying.. Oh we would still get Pence.. Yeah that wouldn't matter anymore. It could be a crippled Presidency even with both houses of congress. Public perception of the entire Presidency would be in the toilet, and nothing would happen over the next two years until after the midterms. GOP would get FUCKED in 2018 if Impeachment actually happens, between disillusioned Trump voters and pitchfork wielding Democrats.
Congress right now is holding out hope that all of this will die down, they know that if they have to take action it will be a deathblow to the entire Republican Party.
