First Horizon review [Engadget]

I haven't watched the videogamer review but I understand comparing aspects of the game to other games. These days your AAA open world video game has to excel in at least one way to not be received poorly. The Witcher 3 has the great writing and complex sidequests, Dragon's Dogma has the great combat, MGSV has a great stealth sandbox.
If Horizon can't even manage to have better combat than Far Cry, it's game over, man. (hoping this isn't remotely true, though)

This is a new era and you can't just make an open world game with all the ubi-world crutches and decent mechanics.

They are talking about hunting or something. And the reviewer's opinion is ridiculous. The combat in this game is great. No idea about hunting though.

I wouldn't say very positive. It's overall positive, but he has some serious negatives.

- Side quests are lackluster
- Poor stealth
- A lot relies on Ubisoft-like mechanics like skinning animals and taking down towers/camps, which can be a negative for people who don't like that.

That is counter to what we have heard from others, especially the side quests, shrugs.

Impressions already alluded to the game having aspects of other games. Go read any of the impressions from the Gaffers who have it early, Assassins Creed was mentioned, Far Cry, Witcher 3, Tomb Raider. Why is it such an issue with a game reviewer speaking about these?

Besides he says the element that is inherently Horizon's which is the action is done really well and the game shines during that. The only one that I can think of as an unfair comparison is comparing Uncharted 4's characterization to it, but it says it doesn't quite reach those heights. Someone saying that to me when it comes to an open world RPG is a pretty positive in my opinion.

He also goes onto say that presentation, music, graphics it does really well. There's things in there that should be exciting to those anticipating the game. Yeah there are a few negatives, but nothing rubbed me the wrong way with the review.

The combat is quite varied and really fun. You have wide array of weapons and its very engaging. This isn't no farcry.

Was it a big first-party release for sony? I barely saw any marketing about it and feel like the only reason I saw it was because of watching giant bomb and being on neogaf.

Well... you are right.

It's an established franchise, made by the creator of Silent Hill, and priced like any other big titles. But the lack of marketing push is dissapointing.

Microsoft has done better in that regard with Halo Wars 2.

You're reaching as far as he is. Best to relax a bit.

I am fully relaxed bro thanks for your concerns. How am I reaching?

As for comparing to other game,s the issue isn;t that the mention other games, but how they did it.. They break down every component and compare it to a different game in different genres. Why compare the characters to Naughty Dog, a game in a different genre, then compare hunting to far cry, and on....It reeks of trying to look for negatives. You can do that with every game on the market.

Man, these reviews and impressions are getting me hyped!

Really glad I opted to wait and Switch, and these are making it so I'll wait on Zelda on WIi U as well until at least after this--and probably after Mass Effect, and maybe Persona 5.

That's actually one part where the review says that Horizon does it's own thing and it really shines in its action, so I don't think you have to worry about that

LMAO, here we go. Show me a ubisoft game with dungerons and were I can fight large robot dinosaurs, with great characters and story?

I mean, this is a joke post (BD is still a fun game), but you are kinda reaching about Horizon's quality before its in your hands

So will Ubisoft open world gameplay be cool again now that it found its way into a Sony exclusive?

The reason they're uncool is because they're in a Ubisoft game. Ubisoft are like the Adam Sandler of games, everything they do is shit, but it's not like other people can't make good movies with similar themes to Sandler.

Because no one i have seen breaks down a game and compare each aspect to different games in different genres.
It's like me reviewing a fighting game then all of a sudden i start comparing it UC or a RPG for story .
Then i go and comapre the GFX to AC etc etc .

You're making statements like you've played it, just like the poster you're clashing with.

The other poster wasn't really making a statement like he played it, he basically was saying "oh now that Sony is doing it, people are gonna like it" So yeah that has nothing to do with playing the game.

Review thread going to be fun, people barely able to hold themselves together already lol

Well that's because this game has all those elements in them, I dunno that's how I would review something if it were me. This game does a lot of different things, it's hard to compare it just to other RPG's.

That's your own ignorance, if you look at other posts I have discussed the Human AI and other things that can be improved on...Nice try.

Sorry for not reading the whole thread or other ones then, but from those past two pages, you really don't seem to like when a reviewer says that some aspects are worse than some other games.

LMAO, here we go. Show me a ubisoft game with dungerons and were I can fight large robot dinosaurs, with great characters and story?

I'm really itching to put some Blood Dragon gif.

btw. I'd hold my horses with the great characters and story praises, let us at least wait till more reviews drop.

You can essentially do that for almost any game since nothing is ever original anymore, not that that's inherently a negative thing.

Lots of cracking from all sides. Seems to be a trend with most Sony releases.

This happens everytime a Sony exclusive is about to come out.

Personally I am still on a wait and see. Guerilla has never delivered for me, and that BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM video looked so bad I actually couldn't believe this was voice acting in a 2017 AAA video game.

Why do you think we are mockingly refered to as SonyGAF on other parts of the internet. This happens everytime a Sony exclusive is about to come out.

The SonyGaf thing is stupid and anyone who believes that is lol. Also yes lets bring up that one cut scene, may as well. Lots of previews should tell you the rest of the game isn't like that,

That's true and that's why I find nothing wrong with comparing elements of one game to elements of another, what's so weird about that?

The reviewer is comparing specific aspects from all those games, he's not saying that it's exactly like Tomb Raider or exactly like Assassins Creed.

We're mocked cause the rest of the internet (the people in question) have the memory of a goldfish and a gigantic persecution complex. There is no doubt about that.

It's so weird ppl keep trying to pin this as a Sony thing to me. Like the Zelda review thread bout to be the biggest pile of shit as soon as a low score comes in.
Yep.

That seems to have been an outlier. The rest aren't of that quality.

What a weird review, it starts off with how open world RPGs never hold her interest for more than a few hours... why the hell would you let a person who isn't that much into open world RPGs review an open world RPG?
