NieR Automata Xbox One UPDATE: Why NieR sequel won't be coming to Microsoft's console

People really need to go back and look at the sales of the original Nier in Japan.

It did decently well on PS3 (121k), but unsurprisingly given the limited audience for 360 there, the Xbox version didn't sell well at all despite being significantly different enough (Gestalt vs Replicant) to justify double-dipping.

Drakengard 3 did similar numbers (114k) as a PS3 exclusive, which should give a reasonable indication of the size of its fanbase.

Based on Automata getting a substantially bigger push than either of the two previous entries, PG bringing in their own fanbase, and word of mouth value from a pretty stellar demo, I can imagine SE forecasting to do somewhat better, possibly enough to cover costs by itself.

I can certainly see it looking more profitable for SE than many of their lesser traditional JRPG franchises.

I would really like to see this game get traction. -_- It getting a steam version was some of the best news I heard all year. I glad they were at least able to do that.

Okay, guys, there is very clearly a pile on forming. Let's stop and think about whether it is genuinely necessary. When trying to be funny, people are going to occasionally push the boundaries. Sometimes they end up saying something in not-so-great taste. Maybe we can let this one slip (you know, like MS did with their game lineup for 2017)?

Maybe don't talk about a potential third platform when you "mysteriously" forgot about that PC version you announced a year ago was coming on day one. And people still don't believe Sony moneyhatted after that stange of a behaviour, give me a break.
rather than to split our efforts across two platforms
I mean wtf, how can you explain this?

SE is incompetent when it comes to PC versions.

It's probably a favor at least to sony.
FOLLOW*THE*MONEY
They are doing is playing dumb for a minute on the pc version so sony can get a little more sales and let the association get stronger. I bet the pc version will be back in a month. At least that's what I'm counting on. 1 of my friends has a ps4 besides me, and the rest all play on steam only. I would really like some of them to try this game.

If remember seeing a huge gap between PS4 and Xbox One sales for FFXV, so I can't even imagine how Nier Automata would fare on Xbox.

Speaking of the game itself, this game needs to be very good. It's selling to a super niche, because I don't know if this game is attracting people who haven't played Taro Yoko's games. It is at risk of being a serious flop.

Not like it doesn't make sense.

Microsoft's complete lack of global vision with the Xbox brand was hurting them even when they were at their peak midway through the 360's lifespan, but at least then they had too much market presence for most JP pubs to ignore. Now that they're in such a position of weakness in all but a couple of markets and there have been numerous demonstrable examples of what audience the platform does have rejecting more Japanese centric games at this point it was only a matter of time before the publishers were just going to throw their hands up and forget it.

New sources confirmed that a NieR Automata port was being developed for Xbox One.

More NieR Automata in 2018? This was indicated by a source of jeuxvideo.com who preferred to remain anonymous. The PlatinumGames game should be released soon on Xbox One X. The action-RPG of Yoko Taro had marked the spirits in 2017, thanks to his universe, his characters, and especially his extremely well crafted gameplay. Unveiled in 2016, the game was first introduced as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, before it was announced that NieR Automata would also benefit from a PC release. The Sony console had the exclusivity of its game not because an agreement had been signed between the Japanese manufacturer and Square Enix, but especially because it is in this way that many Japanese developers and publishers reason, for whom the Xbox One is absolutely not a priority. Japanese games work much worse on the Microsoft console than on PlayStation 4, discouraging even the biggest names in the industry.

Last month, during PAX East, Yoko Taro announced that he would like to develop NieR's universe. This new release, however late it may be, could reach a new audience and prepare them for a future release.

Contacted by us, Square Enix did not wish to make any comment.

Yes, don't invest in learning how to make games for the platform, then blame the platform for your games sucking on it. Classic BS used against Xbox and PC for decades.

Dice Dice
I don't think he's talking about that. It sounds more like he's talking about potential sales with their being a far more limited install base on the Xbox, particularly in Japan. It just sounds like he didn't really think it was worth it rather than him thinking it wouldn't run well on the Xbox.

I feel the type of gamer who would be interested in this game is the type that already owned a PS4.

I can't see an Xbox version of this selling. Switch on the other hand...

If does releases on Switch I will double dip in a heart beat.

They would have to make some serious optimization work then, the game is super demanding, it doesn't manage to keep a steady 60 fps on ps4 and is most of the time in the 40s, while on PC you need a pretty good GPU to run it correctly.

Exactly. I could never see a Switch version happening. And even if it did, it'd be a version of the game that no one would want.

Sign me up for a double dip on the Xbox One X though when it -hopefully- comes out. It looked fantastic on the Pro and it has the potential to look even better on the X.

I hope it gets on the XBOX One, so that XBOX owners also can experience the game. If it goes on Switch, then I'll buy it in a heartbeat. For some reason Nier: Automata was really calming. I loved just running around and killing things in the game and doing sidequests.

This is the only PS4 exclusive I have been interested in, as a Xbox and Switch owner.

So there are players on Xbox that will definitely buy this game, and I am one of them. Not interested in a butchered Switch port. I like my games native res and 60fps.

If a game needs 60 FPS as integral part of gameplay and is demanding on controls acccuracy then, yeah, the novelty of "I am playing it on the go" wears off after a while. Think DOOM Switch handheld mode vs DOOM PS4... not fully stable 30 FPS with several cutbacks and a softer than desirable image vs 60 FPS sharp and polished IQ.

Yes. Bayonetta 1 & 2 are perfectly fine on Switch, Doom is not.

I'd rather play older games that run 720p@60fps handheld mode than recent games with blur, sub 30fps, sub 720p resolution.

I have 2 copies of the game ( 1 brand new and one used . both limited edition steelbook )

Just because I am in love with this game. from the amazing soundtrack to the gameplay, its really a must play game this generation. I do hope it comes to Xbox so I can play it again with better graphics on the X. since the PC port is bad .

with that being said I do not have high hopes.

If you don't look at the technical side of things, Doom is awesome to play on the Switch on the Go ( if you are into that kind of games in the first place ).

This game has more atmosphere than just about anything I've played. The combination of its artstyle and music gives me goosebumps at times.

I hoped for a little more from the main combat. It's not bad, but it's nothing special either. Also, while the art direction is great, the actual quality and textures are more B-tier than typical AAA.

Overall, it's a fantastic experience. The story is cool even if it doesn't strike quite as hard as the original's new game plus.

I agree. I mainly play Xbox One despite having all platforms, and Nier (and the rest of the catalogue) just doesn't appeal to me, and I think a lot of other Xbox One owners feel the same.

Please stop wanted PS4 and Xbox One to be the same type of platform. Sony focus on single player and Microsoft focus on online, and please keep it that way.

I've been thinking of grabbing this game since I got a PS4 Pro, but I'll wait a bit and see if it comes to Xbox and is X enhanced.

The game was good but had horrible technical problems on PC even on high end hardware. Frames related issues.

All you need is enough folks to buy it to make a profit on porting it. They don't have to sell a crazy amount for that.

Even that will be a challenge. The audience for niche JRPG isn't necessarily large on ps4 either, but on Xbox it is near nonexistent. If a major franchise like ff15 struggles to hit 1 million on a 30 million userbase, what chance does a niche JRPG have?

I wish this game would come to XB1. I dont own a PS4 and I heard the PC port was not good.
I mean, if you like games like this, I see no reason to not own a PS4. Its not as if its getting less games like this or something lol

Nier Automata is an AMAZING game, I think it would have got more GOTY if not for BoTW, Persona 5 and Horizon. It was just smashed in between HUGE heavy hitters, in another time, this would easily be GOTY, this is a must own for anyone that like JRPGs (along with the PS4)
