People really need to go back and look at the sales of the original Nier in Japan.
It did decently well on PS3 (121k), but unsurprisingly given the limited audience for 360 there, the Xbox version didn't sell well at all despite being significantly different enough (Gestalt vs Replicant) to justify double-dipping.
Drakengard 3 did similar numbers (114k) as a PS3 exclusive, which should give a reasonable indication of the size of its fanbase.
Based on Automata getting a substantially bigger push than either of the two previous entries, PG bringing in their own fanbase, and word of mouth value from a pretty stellar demo, I can imagine SE forecasting to do somewhat better, possibly enough to cover costs by itself.
I can certainly see it looking more profitable for SE than many of their lesser traditional JRPG franchises.
