Gamexplain Explains the Joy-Con Desyncing Problem

wasn't this video just posted a few hours ago?

if they don't say anything before launch I agree Nintendo is in the wrong but you are jumping the gun.

It's been a known issue to the outlets for at least the last 12 hours. More than enough time to make a statement on something that is understandably a bit unnerving.

But that's neither here nor there. My original statement was referring to game developers in general. Like how Sony never clarified PS4 Pro patch notes and the community was forced to do their own investigations. Just shit like that. Seems like some of the big guys aren't standing in front of their issues in order to address them much these days.

Interesting, I'm about 12 feet from my TV, and occasionally have problems with my DS4, this ain't gonna be good.

Do you have anything that would possibly be interfering? Bluetooth on a laptop, phone, a router nearby, wireless headsets, USB plugged into a PC (these have horrible emissions), TV wifi running, etc.

I just measured how far my couch is from the dock and it's exactly 8 feet. Which begs me to believe 8ft is the sweet spot. Because the closer I get the less wonky the controls get.

I did numerous tests just now with different configurations, docked, tabletop, 6 feet, 10 feet, covering the joycon, uncovering it. What I found is hat obviously the further you get the less responsive they become. However the only really weird outlier in my testing was simply sitting 6 feet away, lounging with my hands to my side, neither joy con covered, and yet still after some time the sensing would just get completely wonky. Sitting about 4 feet away I noticed that if my hands are by my side but pointing at the screen everything's perfect but as soon as I drop my hands to a more comfortable position, the calibration once again gets weird and has a few dead spots. If I put the joycon behind my back for example, then the party's over. There's barely ever any response or all the inputs are delayed. That one is more understandable I guess since it correlates to the gamexplain video, but doesn't at all explain why it's still messing up 6 feet away when simply lounging.

I also opted to try some of these variables with the grip since I figured the grip would force me to point the joycon more so at the tv/dock but surprisingly I found out that it too had some issues. I tried holding the controller in many different ways, all comfortable ways like I imagined I would hold it if I'm playing for a long period of time. Simply holding the grip in front of me seems to work just fine, however if I decide to bring the grip up to my chest (for example when I'm laying down) so that the buttons are facing it and that the top of the controller is facing my face, it completely stops working. Right joycon can still rotate the camera but link simply won't move. So the position of the joycon seems to really play a large part in how it's detected.

Also, man I can't believe how long I just spent rotating a damn dot around a circle just to see if a controller is working properly! On a new console no less! I really love the joy con too and I'd rather use them instead of a pro controller so I'm hoping this signal issue can be fixed with an update.

2017 and a $300 gaming system's reliability is questionable at 6-8 ft. Incredible.

i keep reading mixed responses about how this can or cannot be fixed with an update

IS there a scenario in which it could be entirely related to a hardware aspect and not to a software one? has somethign liek this happened before?

I read that this happened with the dualshock, but was is similar? i didn't had a ps3 at launch

Feels good not being an early adopter right now, hopefully this is something they can address with a firmware update.

I mean yeah I do have a router in the same room, but unfortunately that's where it has to stay. And no other console is giving me issues with it being in the same room. I mean if that really IS it, then that's still some terrible planning on Nintendo's part.

Shoulda stumped for that 2010 technology Bluetooth 4.0, Nintendo. Why break the habit of a lifetime though, I'm sure you know best. Count dem pennies.

Shit, this sucks.

I won't cancel my preorder right now but if Nintendo does not publicly explain the situation and what they'll do to fix this I'm definitely waiting on it.

I can take no VC, weak launch line up, all that UI secrecy and whatever but this right here is important and for me their silence would be very disrespectful towards their consumers. I'm not forgiving that.

Damn, you wanna bring back the Famicom days? ;)

I'm sure you're kidding, but those Switch events were controlled environments.

Events where there's 50+ cellphones & wifi?

I mean, seriously, who ends up playing in such a way where this could be a problem, in the way Gamexplain found, at least.

2017 and a $300 gaming system's reliability is questionable at 6-8 ft. Incredible.

They are probably using a Bluetooth Low Energy radio for the Joycons. They have variable power states for the radio, and so they should be able to offer a boost to both the joycon itself and the radio on the switch, if they were conservative initially in order to maximize battery life.

Two situations run counter to that argument -
1. Nintendo has enough internal data to know that playing 10-15ft away from the TV is an edge case, and thus not something to be prioritized.
2. This is still a software issue, exclusive to whatever in-progress version of the OS is on advance units.

Regarding 1, if that is the case, then one would assume Nintendo could inform people about the range limitations and already had an answer to those with this problem. Furthermore, the issue seems to be large enough to be noticeable and cause issues amongst a small userbase.

Point 2. could be, yes. Not sure why they'd tune the signal strength for these advance units like this but who knows.

I want to add that I never said that the way it appears to me is the most likely, so I don't necessarily disagree with you or anything.

No one should be canceling over this. Does anyone here really think Nintendo won't make this right or fix this!? Seriously?

It's not like that damn can't be used with the Joycons attached to the system itself. Did people suddenly forget it's a damn portable as well? Or that there is an entire other controller out there with no issues as well? We're talking about one setup here that very likely is addressable or where the Joycons could be outright replaced by Nintendo.

Like, just now I put my phone down after reading some responses, picked up the grip with the joycon attached (I'm laying down on my couch) and I'm holding the controller very normally upright with the face buttons facing me and the top of the controller facing the ceiling, you know, a completely normally way to hold a controller, and in a menu I've already had it not register two of my inputs and three of them were delayed.

I hate hate hate giving you guys bad news like this because god damn this system is awesome in every other way but this connectivity or sensor problem is really bumming me out :/

Edit: I see some people thinking of cAnceling their preorders and man that was never my intention with these tests. The console itself is rad as hell and I can only imagine Nintendo HAS to have some sort of fix for this. The only reason I did those extensive tests was to be as transparent, and so everyone knows what the CURRENT state of these consoles are. But yeah ok really hoping that there's some sort of statement and more importantly a fix, cause gah dahm dat Zelda.

If the Nintendo claim is accurate and this is to be fixed by release, then it really is a non-issue. They should however stand in front of it and make a statement in order to help quell the frothing media outlets looking for a story.

No, that's not how PR works.

Right now no one has even posted a story about this. If it's floating around enthusiast press sites tomorrow and gaining the attention of the press at large, then maybe they nip it in the bud. But you don't pre-emptively place a megaphone in front of an issue 99.9% of your audience hasn't even heard about yet.

I have all the faith in the world that Nintendo will make this right.

I just don't know that they'll be able to fix it via software.

Yeah, it'd have to be like in the same TV cabinet as it or right next to it for there to be a problem.

At 12 feet and with my PS4 in an enclosed TV stand if my wife walked by with her iPad and Bluetooth on I'd start experiencing delay. If I had a USB stick plugged into my PC which shared the cabinet with my PS4, forget about it.

Its people on the fence looking for a reason to jump to the other side. Some may have just got caught up in launch fever and put in an order to be safe and maybe aren't ready just yet. Should just wait if you are interested though. Worst case scenario you wait for 24-48 hours after launch to open it and return the thing. If this is a major issue at that point we will more than know.

This makes me really glad I bought a pro controller. I was wondering whether it'd be worth it, but now this solidifies it as nearly necessary.

Thanks for the impressions.

Hope we get more.

I mean, just read the comment below yours...

I want the switch to be able to play it in all the its possible modes without hasle. If it just meant not covering the joycons with my hands like in the gamexplain video then I wouldn't mind, but it does seem like some people are having it worse than that.

If they assured me I'd be able to return the switch in case I get this problem too then I'd go ahead with the purchase but I definitely don't want to be an early adopter just to be stuck with a switch that only works properly when I'm handheld mode.

I'm sure Nintendo can fix this, I just need to hear it from them and before release, that's all I'm asking and it's not much.

Solution...

All they have to do is use up the extra cable they cut off of the NES Mini controllers.

some do, i did, but i guess i just got caught in the moment and didn't think this clearly

I'm not even trying to push any pov in this discussion but this person has been a joke for as a long as i can remember, you can find him on most med to big sites that so much as mention nintendo in any article and hell be there claiming he's super important insider that knows so much more than anyone else and its always wishful fan theories.

If there's no way to boost the signal from the joy-con the only solution would be for Nintendo to replace them.

Ps3 came with the sixaxis controller at launch. It would randomly disconnect for a few seconds and had no relation to signal interference.

It's not your fault. Don't blame yourself. You're just giving us news we don't want to hear (but need to know).

That sounds like a very very weak signal. It's really crazy from the company that released the Wavebird and all their subsequent wireless controllers.

I may cancel based on this if no official statement is issued by Tuesday. It is just unacceptable from a modern gaming device.

It's a week out, I'd just advise everyone to not be reactionary and let this play out until Nintendo has a chance to respond. Cancelling a pre-order now is no different then on Tuesday and if they announce "Whoops it's getting stuck in a low energy mode, hotfix incoming" and you've lost out on your pre-order you'll be bummed.

What retailer are you buying from that wouldn't let you return a purchase for any reason within at least a week? I mean I get it's a hassle and you'd rather avoid it completely, but if it's not working well for you and Nintendo doesn't have an immediate plan, return it.

If we don't have any news/promise of this being fixed @ launch by Tuesday, will cancel. The hardware is too expensive to risk it being a dud and having to re-buy a new revision.

Thankfully I have a Wii U.
