The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild **SPOILER FREE** Impression Thread

It's really just two things.

1. Lots of people just don't like these art styles and prefer more "realistic" styles like Horizon/Witcher 3 etc.

2. Some are stickers for performance, and apparently the frame rate isn't great in places in this, especially in the Wii U version.

I fall into the first and will play this for the gameplay not soaking in the world, so I don't care much about the second Where as bad frame rate would ruin a "spectacle" game like Horizon for me where soaking in the world/graphics/immersion are the main draws for me.

I have no sensitivity to frame rates so that wouldn't worry me but textures and assets popping in and out really annoys me

No, I'll always prefere good voice acting over grunts and giggles, but bad voice acting just drags the whole production down.

good voice acting in video games is so incredibly rare, why I prefer text all day long

I think the sounds of wildlife and nature are wonderful to listen to. Branches snapping, water flowing, wind howling. I've loved hearing it in footage I've watched.

I've been playing gameplay videos on YouTube as background noise, lately. Really great ambience.

Honestly I am shocked people think this game is ugly... Certainly there are moments of bad textures but I saw a scene where link was running through long flowing grass, there was a reflection of the setting sun on the stems, the swiss like mountains looming all around. I was in awe..Kind of reminded me of when I first played Journey.

No NoA dub has yet surpassed NoE's Xenoblade dub for me.

It either needs to be good enough to be praised or bad enough to be iconic.

The middle ground is where things get messy lol.

I'm usually fine with both but when I played the Switch demo the frame rate surprisingly annoyed me. A lot more than I would have ever expected. It's encouraging to hear it's since improved and is even better when you are off the Great Plateau.

everyone's playing the Wii U version

Is the japanese VA well done, at least? From the trailers it really reminded me of Ghibli movies...I don't understand a single word japanese, though, haha.

Sorry if this has been asked already but, is the english VA the same in NA and UK? I´ll be playingt he EU version and I´d like to do so in English.

I don't believe the voice acting is bad. Just becasue a couple of people are saying they don't like the voice acting? Well bad for them I guess.

Oh, I'm sure it's pretty bad.

But when you've got people like IGN's Alanah Pearce saying the VO is absolutely terrible, yet she'd rate the game a 10 if she were reviewing it....it's not going to be much of an issue for most people.

Judging by his previous responses I think he's mainly referring to the visuals there. Like, grassy hills in the far off distance just look green, with no texture of any sort visible. It seems to look more like a heightmap or a "terrain object" than a real world because of that.

Is what he seemed to be saying.

I dont understand why they didnt go for a full cartoony look ala wind waker.

They did for some aspects of the game but not others.

Nintendo should've hired Kiefer Sutherland for Link! Get some quality people on that cast list lol.

Ooohh, let's play this game.

Zelda: Emma Stone (cause why not) or Emilia Clarke

Goron: John Goodman

Zora: Dakota Fanning

Rito: Jared Leto

Gerudo girl: Mila Kunis

Old Man/ Deku Tree: Liam Neeson

Don't want to derail this thread... I just had to share my thoughts lol.

I was fine with the VA in the trailer. I don't think I'm very hard to please when it comes to VA though. Like when I hear people complain about how horrible certain anime dubs are compared to the Japanese version but it doesn't bother me. I'm sure personally I'll be just fine with the VA.

Soundtrack "spoilers" (if you want to call it that but I'm being careful for the touchy)
Zora's Domain theme is everything I wanted and then some

Didn't people get pissed when WW was first shown off?

Yeah but that was a different time. That was right around the start of the whole grimdark era games went through where everything had to be really serious, dark, and gritty. Plus people remembered the Spaceworld demo. Once people actually played WW they loved it. Plus, we're currently in an era of color and more cartoonish palettes. Look at Sunset Overdrive, Rime, The Witness, Overwatch, Journey, Abzu, etc. That would be much more accepted now

Are there impressions from beyond the Plateau yet? From the previews it seems the less impressive part of the game.

You will get NA voice acting with UK subs. Theres no way you are grttin english voices and subs in your language.

But being in europe, why would you want to hear the english mediocre voiceacting, when, from what we have heard of the other european dub, they are all much better.

Like, from your user name maybe you are from Spain. And the spanish dub is top quality. Ive read in a forum that even Gustems, one of the super good voice actors here, is doing the voice of
the main villain, that we think is probably ganon
. That Nintendo Iberia going for the top quality stuff.

This game looks incredible but the Wii U version has two of the biggest things I have issues with, bad voice acting and terrible frame rate.
Oh boy.
Edit: I should have phrased that better.
I don't mean the switch has different voice acting, I'm just saying the only problems from previews so far seem to be the VO and the Wii U framerate. And those are two of the biggest turnoffs for me usually. I hope I can look past them.

I mean, haven't Zelda games always had this sort of ethereal / cartoonish / fantastical tone when it comes to VA? I don't think anyone is expecting these sort of thespian performances that you might get in a game like TLOU

dunno

Beyond is the less impressive part? Or the Plateau itself is the less impressive part?

The previewers seemed to be more impressed with beyond the Plateau, which is probably part of the reason Gaffers aren't so high on this game yet (because they're not that far along yet).

It's nothing you can't see for yourself in trailers. The mountains don't really look like mountains but rather heightmaps, the textures don't evoke real rocks or foliage, and the map layout on a macro level doesn't feel like real topology. You walk across a line, and on one side is grass and on another, snow. Then another line, and it's desert. Like I said, think of WoW regions and you'll kind see what I mean.

It's not a huge problem - Majora's Mask had a totally artificial world map, TP's was pretty poor with it's silly shaped fields and huge chasms. Like those games, this feels like a big level rather than someplace people actually live, farm, work. (Or lived, farmed, worked as applicable)

.

Thank you for this. Maybe it's the drawback of trying to make everything reachable.

I disagree. Wind Waker HD looks absolutely stunning, every time I see footage of that I'm blown away. BotW looks nice, but not quite as nice. IMO.

BOTW looks much better than Wind Waker HD. Which was just a bloom cartoon mess. Literally the second I see the grass in BOTW, I know they made the right choice

Good point.

Oh boy.

The voices will be the same on both versions.

Cell shading has a remarkable way of making a games artstyle hold up. The OG WW looks better then some games that are half it's age.

We really got folks in here talking about the great plateu, in which we've seen hours of footage of and even had an entire E3 dedicated too...

Hype fading lol.

And The Great Plateu won an E3 all on its own so if that's the least impressive part of the game I'm not worried.

Fantasy setting = English accents

THAT'S THE RULE MOTHERFUCKER

Yeah the starting area has been pretty much talked to death at this point. I would give impressions outside of that, but obviously that's spoiler territory. But I'll say this, as large as the area is and feels right when you start out, it'll feel like a kid's playpen next to a football field area of play when you return.
