The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild **SPOILER FREE** Impression Thread

Played about 7 hours of it so far.

You know how each zelda game has a gimmick? Like Time in Ocarina, the Masks in Majora? Well this game's gimmick is the world. You use the world to solve puzzles, basically.

Exploration is pretty important. Game is wide open, and there are open spaces that take a while to get through but not so much that it becomes farcical. The game is packed with loads of stuff I'm overlooking as I'm constantly getting my attention pulled in a new direction by something I haven't seen before.

Didn't want to quote the whole post but thanks a lot for the comments, sounds really good! Especially the puzzle elements and The Witness comparisons.

I'm diving spoiler-free into the game, as I've barely seen the official trailers and little else, and I'd like to know if the beginning of the game (1st hour or so) contains violent or dark imagery in the cutscenes, as I'll be playing with my kid and don't want him to be scared.

I'd say it's PG until you leave the platitude. It's always sunny and bright up there and the enemies are pretty goofy and light hearted.

There will be a cutscene that plays when you put your "map" item into a shrine you find, there's a spoopy black mist in the distance so be warned. After that it's fine.

Later parts of the game might be a bit creepy/tense for him though.

Here:

I think I misunderstood your swapping desire. I thought you meant a fast way to pick and swap weapons, ie you're holding a mop, you want a sword, you press a button and call up the weapon scroller and pick the sword, which is in the game. But if I'm understanding you right you mean a quick way to dispose of weapons you don't want? Or do you mean like you have a sword in-hand and then you set say the bow to X so you press X to quick swap between those two weapons?

It's really simple. I would like to be able to swap whatever weapon is in my hand for the one on the ground.

The reason this is an issue is illustrated in the following scenario: I have an inventory full of weapons, I want a new one that is on the ground. I have to go into my inventory and discard one of my weapons before the game will let me pick up the one on the ground.

I don't understand that mindset. I don't know how old your kid is, but for kids its not good to keep them safe from everything, scary experiences are just as important as light hearted ones imo. And its a Zelda game after all, there won't be anything in it that would traumatize your kid. I played the Shadow Temple as a kid and I was fine. Not trying to teach you btw, just a reminder.

Maybe it could prompt you Animal Crossing style that you have to get rid of one, and lets you choose to discard one.

Ooooh ok I get what you mean now. Don't know why I had such a hard time with that. Yes that would be ideal.

so it begins :D

I had a screw it moment and checked the spoiler thread for just 2 seconds. No joke, just 2 seconds, and what I saw in just a couple of posts... truly mindblowing. GOAT material with this viddygaim.

Are you talking in general or for this game?

In general.

Yep, and discard weapons from quick menu would be nice as well, it's so easy to implant that I don't understand why it's not there.

Rule of thumb, don't tell people how they should or shouldn't raise their kids. There are two people who are fit to make that decision and he/her is one of them.

When I ask somebody about things like that for my 14 month old daughter I'm not asking for them to make or share what they would do, but instead trying to get more info to make my decision

Side note from one parent to another, why does everything sound like the hot dog dance song now? Does it ever stop?

Also no I'm not saying my daughter plays or watches me play games, I was speaking about parental/content info in general

Not into the who 'a community raises a child' notion then?

Well, I agree with the first guy. There's nothing in any Zelda I've played previously that I would worry about any kid watching (who's old enough for TV to hold their attention).

Unfortunately the poster wasn't asking about prior zelda games, he was asking about a soon to be released game that admittedly is turning a lot of the conventions of the series on its side. I'll admit I don't think there would be anything in the first hour that would be considered dark imagery but I also can't say if their are any cutscenes there weren't shown officially that might show such things

*shivers*

Jesus. Are we talking about the story, world design, gameplay, or what?

In gameplay and customization options! I saw a few battles gif and a screenshot. Wanted to read few posts but couldn't hold it anymore and went out of the thread. This game is truly something else.

These kinds of posts are the ones I like the best.

Now I'm just watching puppy videos on youtube to try to forget what I saw and be amazed once I play it for myself haha.

Same here. BTW, I ´m curently playing Zelda 1 and just got my ass handled to me by going into the 3rd dungeon right at the start, so I totally understand your example lol

Griss´s adventure sounds awesome to me, I can´t wait to put myself in those kind of situations. I loved going through the world in XenobladeX like a badass, only to find an overleveled enemy to put me in my place and make me GTFO or die. It made the world feel alive and dangerous and made every small victory and discovery a significant step in conquering it.

And instead of waiting in the rain, he could just have started a fire and go to the following morning. I love how this game seems to create little stories like that.

Too big for my taste, sometimes it feels like MGS V, too big, few things, you are going to spend a lot of time running and playing with the stamina.

The first "not mandatory" shrine I went was good, inteligent puzzles.
Also weapon durability SUCKS, no matter what or how some people try to find a positive aspect on it.

You can raise your stamina, horse+glider+teleportation make traveling quicker and it's your own responsibility if you're not sticking to the story and go get lost, lol. Yes, I've the game too.

Weapon durability is fine, you loot so many weapons often that I don't worry at all also you don't have to kill every single enemies since there is no exp system. It's you who choose what and when you want to farm so when to use your weapons too, lol I play Fire Emblem so I know when I dislike weapon durability.

My point? More you advance in the game and more Nintendo will give you better weapon or shields, you will still loot basic equipment but you don't have too loot them. Don't feel forced to loot just because it's available XD

At the moment, my fav thing is the horse, I knew the animations were really cool but when you play and see it with your own eyes, you will respect the guys who studied horses, lol

Thanks, that's what I expected and I'm relieved he will be able to share the beginning of the game (and the first hands on with the Switch :-) together. No problem with the black mist, I was thinking more on the line of Zelda crying and other dramatic stuff shown in the trailers. As I dive into the game, I'll decide what's good for him to see.

He's 6 years old, loved playing A Link Between Worlds (still asks for the OST) which also had a Shadow Temple, but the art direction made it lighter in tone. And we're reading Bone together, so I don't really overprotect him, but that's a comic and darker stuff is not so impactful in that medium. Knowing him, he won't like hunting boars or any wildlife killing present in BotW though.

As I sidenote, he saw a couple tiny Little Nightmare screenshots in a magazine ad and spent the next two hours asking about them. Kids are attracted to scary and creepy stuff, that's why Scooby Doo is still popular, but I don't want to start playing the game and have Ganon appear 5 min later burning a village with people running and screaming, as that would upset him.

Played about 45 minutes, the use of sound and physics is mind blowing, I threw a metal gear on some steps, and I can could hear the sound changing depending on how the gear moves on the ladder, same thing with the boulder, it feels so good to just watch a boulder run off a cliff and hit enemies because of how well the physics and sound work together.

About 8 hours in, some quick thoughts:

The Good
It really is a fresh take on Zelda, it feels like a real innovation for Nintendo after a long time

Extremely atmospheric, a lot of classic Zelda charm from the puzzles to the NPC'S

It is HARD, you will actually die for once, especially going to later areas early

It's just fun, tbh

The Bad
The world seems just a bit too big, and with all the puzzles in shrines it seems a bit devoid of activities

The controls have some weird choices, but this is only really an issue when you need to do multiple actions consecutively, eg sprint, jump, and use an item

The frame rate dips heavily, but this could just be the Wii U version

Also I don't like weapon durability, but that's me. Seems they break every other enemy

Overall though, I'm loving it, don't let the negatives put you off at all

I have a question and I'm not sure if it's reply is a spoiler, for some: are there korok seed puzzles that expect you to jump on shit that doesn't really indicate a clear way to jump it, sort of like the jumping puzzles in guild wars 2? I know it's oddly specific but this is all I need to know at this point lol

Did you check the options? You can swap some of the buttons. Using X to run feels better than the default option imo.

I agree with your thoughts about weapon durability. And I love that mechanic in other games like Demon's Souls. BotW wants you to explore as much as possible and it's fun to triumph against really tough enemies but having to go through 5 melee weapons in order to do so is annoying. It doesn't add to the challenge at all, it's just profoundly tedious. I hope there are unbreakable weapons later on.

Interesting - why do you think that's the case? I would have thought that sprint would generally get more use than jump and so it'd be better to have that on B than jump since your thumb generally rests on B more.

It feels very weird to have B run and X jump -
they're opposite each other. It would make more sense to have them be buttons next to each other.

Yeah, it feels unnatural at first but I got used to it quickly. Try it, you'll see. With the default option, since you're running most of the time, going from B to X without pressing the other buttons is a bit clunky. But with the tip of the thumb on X, it's much easier to tap B when you need to.

2 questions Gaf:

1. Review today?

2. Does Pro mode remove waypoints and anybody playing this it's the way to go?
Don't have the game yet. But generally speaking if an open world has way points then the game is generally designed around it. If you remove it, expect to be lost a lot of the times.

I don't know, this is easily the most disappointing feature for me but then again, there's no other way to do it.

I don't know about that. You can play Witcher 3 without waypoints. You do get lost but that's part of the fun.

In general.

So you don't like Monster Hunter, Bushido Blade, Soul Edge, Fire Emblem, Dark Cloud, Pathologic, Fallout, Demon's Souls and heck even the movie tie in Buffy The Vampire Slayer game let you use wooden weapons until they were smashed into a steak you could drive into enemies in a glorious finisher?

Just a quick question for you guys that are playing. Super noob question here.

How do you do a flurry rush? How in the world do you dodge/parry? I tried a few buttons but not everything. I'm still in the beginning zone.

This is my first Zelda game and I'm really enjoying myself, absolutely no constant hand holding like I heard about from Skyward Sword

Is the switch pro controller necessary for this game?

Yes, it can't be played without it.

Haven't played it, but I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of jumping out of the way (while targeting the enemy) just before you're hit, and then spamming the attack button.

You'll learn all that in one of the small shrines early on. To parry, lock on the enemy with ZL (on Wii U, I don't know the Switch buttons) and press A at the right time. To dodge, tap jump in a direction while locked on the enemy. Do it at the right time and you'll trigger a flurry rush.

You know how to lock onto an enemy and backflip, right? Find a single moblin and then wait for it to wind up it's attack, you should then backflip at the very last moment before it connects with you and this will activate the 'slow motion' effect. To parry have your shield out and press A while standing still and locked on, this also requires you to do it at the moment you are hit by an attack.

It's tricky, I suggest you just take your time getting the timing perfect.

I'm sorry, where did I say I don't like any game because weapon durability?

I'm so hyped 2 days left. My new tv just arrived now i need to finish TP HD and get 20 (wolf link amiibo) hearts real fast. Currently at the arbiter grounds temple so it should be possible.

Oh, another really good point - multiple solutions to puzzles. Some of my solutions have been so obtuse there's no way they were the intended way to solve it, but they still worked. This also applies for the overworld, for example I climbed a cliff I don't think I was supposed to climb and soared over the entire challenge
