What is a "contextual smear campaign"?

Let me google that for you

oh.

Putin should have known to expect bungling of the highest order from Trump

Which really is still within his goals, certainly of making the US seem like a bunch of bumbling idiots and weakening faith in our government and institutions

This is still possibly going to blow up in his face if enough comes out of how much they interfered (to the point that it sinks the Trump administration), because it will mean the next government, Dem or Rep, will have to take an ultra anti-Russian stance.

NYT: Sticking With Trump, Republicans Resist Call for Broader Russian Inquiry

Posted two hours ago.

...

Initially, the fallout seemed to spawn fissures among Republicans: Several, including Senators Rob Portman of Ohio and Susan Collins of Maine, were quick to call for Mr. Sessions's recusal, defying party leaders — including President Trump — who had said earlier on Thursday that they saw no reason for it.

But by day's end, consensus appeared to have been restored: Mr. Sessions would step aside in any investigation. And that, Republicans suggested, would be enough, at least for now.

None joined the chorus of Democrats, led by Senator Chuck Schumer of New York and Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, demanding Mr. Sessions's immediate resignation.

And it was not clear that the episode would alter the landscape of investigations on Capitol Hill.

"First and foremost, any talk of resignation is nonsense," said Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa and chairman of the Judiciary Committee, before which Mr. Sessions testified.

He praised Mr. Sessions as "an honest and forthright public servant," and thanked him for pledging to send a letter to the committee "to clear up any confusion regarding his testimony."

...
I wonder if anything can stop the GOP from circling the wagons around this joke of an administration.

I haven't see any new thread on this

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2017/03/02/mike-pence-private-email/98637782/

INDIANAPOLIS — Vice President Mike Pence routinely used a private email account to conduct public business as governor of Indiana, at times discussing sensitive matters and homeland security issues.

Emails released to The Indianapolis Star in response to a public records request show Pence communicated via his personal AOL account with top advisers on topics ranging from security gates at the governor's residence to the state's response to terror attacks across the globe. In one email, Pence's top state homeland security adviser relayed an update from the FBI regarding the arrests of several men on federal terror-related charges.

Pence's emails should probably go in its own topic or PoliGAF community thread.

Seems very unrelated to Session's russia stuff.

It's a phrase I used to describe conducting a smear campaign against someone by purposefully looking past the context of answers they've given. I'm very sorry you can't find it on Google. Sometimes people put words into sentences that haven't been used before.

"Several of the president-elect's nominees or senior advisers have Russian ties," Leahy wrote, before asking Sessions point-blank: "Have you been in contact with anyone connected to any part of the Russian government about the 2016 election, either before or after election day?"

"No," Sessions responded.

It's Sessions job as member of the armed forces panel to talk to foreign contacts from many countries including Russia. You either choose to believe it was above board, or you choose not to. The intent of the media at the moment is to ram home Russian collusion, hence the huge focus on him saying he had no contact, but being rather less forthcoming about the fact that the question was in the context of the Trump campaign. While Sessions 'forgets' the specifics of his private meeting, and over there you do seem to have a great many forgetful people who usually don't get this much heat, at least he hasn't claimed no meetings took place. As such I'm more inclined to believe this one than, for example:

Bannon seems like the one most likely to be a festival of disasters, so I'm not sure why the media aren't focusing their attacks on him.

It seems this whole Trump thing is backfiring horribly for Russia:

-Not only is it now pretty much politically impossible to lift the sanctions, and even moreso recognize Crimea, probably the long-term goal, but even having contact with Russia/Russians will put yourself under huge scrutiny;
-They no longer have a foe (Obama/Clinton) they can blame for all their problems;
-The far-right in Europe seems to be losing ground lately

Good job Vladimir

Wonder when they just say fuck it and let us descend into chaos when they release whatever they got.

They probably assumed Trump wouldn't hire people as stupid as him so he could just sit back and they'd do everything.

Yet here we are.

he did nothing wrong. they asked if he talked with anyone about the elections. he didnt. if talking to russians automatically equals we are all spys we are all fucked. thats what this is trying to become..

the thought that people think talking with the russians equals some grand evil plan is sad. and even more so when the person that lost the election actually has ties with russian interests and china.

hopefully sessions will move forward with indictments against Hilary and associates

Here's some context for you:

Sessions lied to Congress. On purpose.

Sessions lied in his statement yesterday.

Sessions met with the Russian spy recruiter and diplomat in the middle of a scandal about Russian hacking.

Sessions was the only member of his committee to do so.

Sessions team declared he only spoke about "campaign" stuff.

Sessions subsequently claimed not to have met at all.

Sessions was supported by a Whitehouse that claimed there was no need for him to recuse himself.

Sessions recused himself and claimed he planned to all along.

Context.

A word I use whenever it is warranted.

Pure cringe. Isn't this tactic more effective on twitter?

I watched that press conference and it looked about as reassuring as Clinton looked when she answers questions about her e-mail server. It's all a bunch of non-denial denials wrapped in legal talk like "I don't recall"

Also, don't post stuff stuff from such partisan accounts like Sean Davis. He's basically the Cenk Uyguy of the right.

He said flatly that he had no contact with Russian officials in the oral testimony. There was no qualification regarding context. That was a lie.

No other member of that council met with the Russian ambassador.

Seriously, I'm an atheist. I don't believe in politics. I've always thought is all bs. At this point most of the world has come out and said. To vote trump. The emails alone should be enough to not vote for mrs Clinton. But for some reason people turn a blind eye. Now with talks of a war with Russia. Fear mongering or not.. It doesnt matter. When has shit like this even remotely been similar in previous elections. ?? It hasn't. And why is that ? Well it seems wiki leaks has once again explained it for all to see. Its all planned well in advance. So if one wins over the other it makes no difference. The powers that be continue to advance further. But this time it seems that not all has gone according to plan. Trump has fucked it all up and they are fighting tooth and nail to stop him. Which side are you on. And are you willing to fight a war with Russia to do it ? Just the thought is insane to me.

Thank you Julian Assange. The man has risked it all to let us know the truths of a world most of us would never truly know.

You may not support Trump, but there isn't much difference.

They asked him if he knew of anyone in the campaign that had talked to the Russians. He said no, and further said he himself had also not spoken to any Russian officials. He did not say "about the campaign" and the question wasn't limited to that either.

The hottest of takes

WE CANT TALK TO RUSSIANS NO MO

Lol

If Clinton's deleted e-mails were so innocuous, why delete them?

If these meetings were so benign, why lie about them?

These two beliefs cannot coincide if you're inclined to believe Trump and Co.

Nothing to see here. If there was any evidence here it would have come out in the confirmation hearings. It's just old news. Just the Dems grasping at threads to delegitimize Trump. They can't compete with him using ideas, only smear campaigns. It's pretty sad actually.

You bring dishonor to your river city avatar. Alex wouldn't put up with Russian spies.
