How in the world do you mix ingredients? I went to one of those plates/dishes on a fire but all it lets you do is move the passing of time (unless that's how you combine ingredients).

goto inventory

click ''apple'' for example, select hold

You can select and hold multiple ingredients like this (max 5). Once you go back to the game, there will be an option to cook in the fire

Select the food -> Hold -> Select any other food -> Exit Menu -> Drop in pot

I'm sure this game is pretty epic and all, unfortunately I can't quite afford a Switch and Zelda right now to try it for myself but after watching gameplay videos of this and Horizon Zero Dawn I'm struggling to understand the massive Metacritic score gap between Horizons 88 and Zeldas 98.

98...I mean really? 2 points off what could be called a perfect game.

Seems a bit high to me and a little fishy but hey, that's the way the cookie has crumbled.
Maybe it's something you gotta play. Some reviewers were iffy on both these games and they ended up liking them a lot, some just liked BOTW more.

Nothing fishy about it. Nintendo has enough money to buy off every review site. There's no way Zelda could be better than Horizon.

So I beat the game yesterday, and I was seriously wondering what kind of appeal the game might have once the main story is done. Is there any reason to keep exploring this massive world?

Well, let me tell you... the game is better when you don't have to worry about any objective any more. When you pick a spot, say 'no fast travelling', and just explore really slowly.

Let me tell you the story of my last hour and a half in the game. No story spoilers, obviously, but 'sights and sounds of the game' spoilers, if you're wondering. The southern Faron woods region, to be specific.

I decide to take a walk through Faron woods. It's gorgeous, and I happily stroll along the path. I meet a minstrel who points out the fact that there was apparently a dragon in the woods. Okay, let's look for that. I go into this misty tropical region full of ruins and fight off a bunch of Lizalfos wielding shock arrows. At the end of this trail, there is is - a huge dragon skeleton. In the skull is a spring - marked 'spring of courage' and statue of Hylia.

Okay, that was awesome, let's move on. I climb the nearby mountains and come out on a peak overlooking lake Floria. It's utterly gorgeous. I swim down the waterfalls, and at the bottom is a stable - always a great discovery. The locals don't have much to say but I spend the night.

Next morning, I go out onto the bridge across lake Floria, where there's a Korok mini-archery test. As I'm doing that, a sound comes from behind. Out of the top of the waterfalls comes a massive yellowgreen dragon. It flies down towards me, under the bridge, utterly majestic. Massive glowing spines on its back shooting electricity. Reflexively I take my bow and shoot it. A scale comes flying off into the lake below. I go retrieve it.

I take the scale back to the dragon ruins where the statue of Hylia was. In a nod to old-school Zelda games, I throw the scale in the spring. The statue thanks me and opens a door to a hidden shrine. Inside is a powerful thunderlance. I'm just floored by the whole thing.

Guys, this might be the greatest pure video game of all time.

trying to figure out the recipe for the old man.

the game plays well on the pro controller -- and boy am I glad I got the pro controller because it feels almost unplayable in joycon mode. The buttons and sticks are too small and the distance between right stick and face buttons just makes it feel impossible to play.

The recipe is pretty self explanatory honestly

Can't tell if this is sarcasm or not.

It's pretty obvious sarcasm.

Can we keep the review talk in the review thread please? The game scored amazing, it doesn't mean you will personally love it and you know what, that's perfectly fine!

Finally came home, cleaned up my living room, ate food, got freshened up, got updates and stuff and started up Zelda.

Even though I've seen it before, Link running out of the chamber and into the Great Plateau, followed by the panoramic shot of Hyrule gets me super emotional. That music, the art, it is such a perfect intro to the game.

Its time to dive in.

Were the previews for this game based on the first 5 hours or could they only talk about the first five hours? I've played it for five hours now and the game is great, don't get me wrong, but I'm not willing to make some of the claims that were made in the previews just yet.

There is a dedicated topic to talk about reviews

Please, leave. This is not the place to pour your saltiness. We are here for the game not game war. Thanks!

Go into your inventory and when you choose an ingredient you can "hold it" and hold up to 5 of the same or different things. When you exit the menu there is a button prompt and the game cooks away .

After not playing the Wii for years, it feels so weird and awkward trying to play this with split controls. Like I'm struggling to get camera controls and weapon switching down.
Especially well in combat.

Feels much better with the grip thing.
Which is surprisingly since I have heard people saying they hated how the grip felt.
Maybe it's because I have trump sized hands?

Wolf Link is pretty awesome. Also, I'm not sure if it's been mentioned before but you don't need to complete the entire Cave of Shadows in Twilight Princess. I only got up to the second checkpoint and Breath of the Wild is accepting it, thankfully.

They only talked about the first five hours but they had clocked around 15h for most at that time.

Playing on the TV the game is kind of extremely beautiful and ugly at the same time

Yeah, sometimes you're running through a field of grass that shimmers against the setting sun and on the horizon you can see the Dueling Peaks and Hyrule Castle, and sometimes you're climbing up a shitty flat rock texture for minutes at a time.

While I'm only about 30 minutes in, there are a number of things that are disappointing me about this game so far.

1) Despite all the focus on "Yes, you can do that" in the previews for the game, in the first 10 minutes I found 2 things - which would have made sense for me to be able to do, we're not even talking about exotic things here - which I wanted to do, which the game would not allow me to do - cut down or shake a guard tower, or cut down or shake a large tree with a large ax.

2) A big gigantic quest marker appearing on the map. And then after that, another quest marker appearing on the map. Sure, I can avoid them, but I thought part of the point was supposed be exploration and discovering things, not following along to quest markers.

3) The early introduction of "fast travel." This dis-incentivizes exploration and, when paired with the above, leads to just selecting the travel spot nearest to the quest marker, going there, and going to the little guided quest marker.

I feel like I had a couple of other issues as well (plus some system issues - such as "HD Rumble" being garbage, just like every rumble feature before it), but those were the 3 that really stood out - especially the first one. It's really disappointing to know that, after all the talk of being able to do whatever you want in this game, that there so many restrictions on what actually can and can't be done.

This game does not hold back any punches. Died three times so far.

First time I was heading to one of the shrines and an enemy with a spear knocked my off the cliff to my death.

Second time I was trying to cross a chilly river and fell in. That was embarrassing.

Third, I was trying to whittle down a Moblin's health with bombs and it kicked it towards me right as a press the detonate button.

I am really enjoying just running around and exploring. So much freedom to experiment and puzzle solve.

I've played 2 hours odd, and the game is very good but I haven't been amazed or blown away by anything yet. Maybe it's because I don't have much attachment to the Zelda series?

Breath of the Wild doesn't support HD Rumble. Just normal rumble. You don't have to fast travel and honestly a vast majority of the time you shouldn't be. When you need to get more hearts or increase stamina it's more than acceptable to go back and do that and then go exploring again.

That's the problem.

Seriously. Just play and enjoy this masterpiece. ;)

You can cut down larger trees with axe it just takes a few swings

30 minutes and you already found all this wrong? Why did you even buy this game man?

1) I wanted to kill a NPC and I couldn't. I agree with you. I feel betrayed.

2) You can disable it.

3) It's optional, you choose to use it.

4) This game doesn't support HD Rumble.

5) The first point was sarcasm.

When my inventory is full of Goblin clubs and I open up a chest containing a cool new sword it would be super cool if it would just give me the option to swap a weapon out instead of making me manually go into my inventory menu to drop a weapon to then reopen the chest.

I'm loving everything about this game. But for whatever reason I'm having the shittiest time getting used to the controls. I keep fumbling like I've never played a Zelda game before :p

Wii U btw.

Just go into the quick menu and throw a weapon away.

Took me the entire plateau to get used to them. Once I got them though it's great.

That's the problem.

Do those things go away?
I mean, I included that to head off the inevitable "You just haven't played it long enough," since these are game-wide issues.

You can cut down larger trees with axe it just takes a few swings

I tried like 10 times - including a number of full-power swings - and it wasn't showing any indication of anything having been done to it.
