EA/OA Mass Effect Andromeda includes Day1 Patch, no launch day animation improvements

If I didn't love this series and be getting this game day one at a steal, I wouldn't buy at launch.

Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at as well. It's actually cheaper for me to pre-order it than wait for a price drop since by the time it gets to the price I'm paying now, it'll probably be 6mo-year down the road.

All these people frantically wanting to cancel their preorders over some Bioware janky cutscene animations. Honestly hilarious.

I guess all I can say is I've been obsessively playing Bioware games for 15 years, and everything feels fine and even great. Just don't get it.

It will be more polished later after some patches. That's for sure. I'm having a blast in the Andromeda galaxy for now, though.

Ehh, I'm very underwhelmed. Mass Effect is one of my fav experiences ever and these unnatural characters ruin the whole thing.

I felt like I was constantly getting bombarded by dialogue in every single video that I watched of this game. Not a single thing to figure out for yourself because the game just spouts it at you. That's the biggest problem that I've had so far, which isn't something that will change in a patch. Definitely going to wait on my purchase.

Edit: which I hate, because I dearly love Mass Effect 1 and 2 and enjoyed the third. This one just looks worse across the board.

I don't get it either. I know people hoped they'd maybe look better since its been a while since ME3 but this kind of stuff never prevented me from enjoying the first trilogy

BioWare should move up the embargo. Numerous outlets (Forbes, PCGamer) are hinting that the game gets at least somewhat better, but those outlets can't talk about it in any detail beyond the first few hours.

Odd situation: BioWare is currently suppressing its best defense against the early internet backlash.

I agree if the core mechanics and Story is fun, than they need to left embargo earlier or one with less restriction. Now people will talk about the animation for days. We will see what happens on monday. Because in my opinion the little bit of story and world building were actually great in the trial

For a game that is trying to be part RPG a bad narrative is a big red flag for me.

Too many other good games out right now, can wait on this game getting fixed or a heavily discounted price.

This. If this were March of last year, I still would have picked it up.

But this year....Just trying to get through all of the awesome stuff we have out...means games that aren't hitting on all cylinders will be picked up in the bargain bin.

Wondering if I should cancel my preorder... How bad is it?

If you just wanna shoot space aliens its great

If you care about dialog, animation, plot, narrative, voice acting, or story then it seems smarter to skip it for now. Given how EA has handled poorly received games in the past, its almost certain this game will drop in price by 50% within a few weeks. Titanfall 2 recently was selling at Best Buy for $22. Battlefront and Mirrors Edge 2 both got put on EA Access in under a year of release.

Plus ya got some amazing games out right now or soon like Yakuza 0, Nier, Nioh, Horizon Zero Dawn, Zelda BOTW, Persona 5 (soon), etc so why bother playing a game that is lesser than all of them, not to mention any older games you might have missed like Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, FF15, Hitman, etc.

People saying its just the animations. No the MP is full of issues especially with rubberbanding, constant lag, freezes. Me and a buddy got nothing after having our game crash in Wave 6 of MP... totally fun.
The aiming in MP has some input lag and really weird feel to it.

Game should have been a Fall 2017 or Early 2018 game. Cancelling the MP Tech test wasnt a good idea...

Giant Bomb, gamespot, pc gamer, kotaku have now all said some very worrying things based on their first impressions. Couple that with an inexcusable narrative presentation for a cinematic RPG and subpar to atrocious writing that ruins the experience. And then all the signs of it being rushed, like character creation and animations, clipping, and bugs. So of course people are worried based on all the red flags.

Lol this animation gate is absurd. Skyrim had shit animation, did everyone skip it? Zelda barely has any voice acting, barely any Cutscenes.. Doesn't matter one bit.

Play the game To play the game. It's ok to make fun of the animations but skipping it over some odd animations is absurd.
Not even close mate.

I mean did people really expect them to fix their entire animation rigging system with a patch? Because thats what it would take at this point to fix all the issues this game seems to have. Seems like this "news" would be common sense.

Umm, the issue is that ME1/2/3 were known for (at the time) having good writing with great voice acting that put you into the story.

It wasn't like TES or others and known for it's terrible dialogue/acting/facial animations.

It's like a 180 from the previous games in terms of the quality they put into the cinematic storytelling vs other games.

I canceled my preorder (special edition) and just preordered Bind of Isaac for Switch (Zelda manual one). Not sure if they could be more opposite lol, but the little guy wins out here because that Andromeda demo unsold the shit out of me.

I assume this also means that the character creator is final. I was hoping that wasn't the case. The customization options are pathetic.

Well I guess lucky for me I have EA Access and a One. Otherwise maybe I'd be losing my mind as well. As far as I can see, it's awesome.

I never read those outlets' articles to be fair.

I have worried about the Meta score this game will have when I look at overall internet feelings towards the developer that just made DAI. I don't think it'll do great in that regard. It is what it is, but I'm confident with some early patches things for hardcore ME fans will be great.

Can't you cancel it?

I had the same expectations. DA:I was a great game imo, with some problems. No denying that. But after playing the trial of ME:A I'm disappointed. So much jank, bad animations all over the place (in a freaking dialogue and cutscene heavy game) and the first few hours are painfully boring.

I did not expect it to be so bad. Feelsbadman

Still, I'm hoping for positive reviews concerning the story. I wanna know if it gets any better. I'm certainly not buying it anytime soon tho, too many good games coming out atm

I could but I got charged already so there's that fun bs to deal with.

The only thing is I'm not interested in anything else coming out so even if I did buy it and was so so on it it's not like I wasted my money. (I mean if I can deal with DA2 I can deal with this). Honestly I'm just play it past Eos on release and use Origin's refund if i don't like it.

Not to sound rude or condescending, but did people honestly expect a Day 1 patch to fix a massive open world games animations? Wouldn't that kind of fix require massive work?

We are seeing different games then if you aren't seeing what me and 4 other outlets are seeing if the first part of the game

The animations are really that bad that people think it unbelievable that it would get released in such a state

Those animations aren't a simple fix, it's an overhaul... especially the lip stuff.

Depends on how long they've been working on that fix. While it doesn't seem like an easy fix, it could have been in development for a few months and only ready for launch (which this confirms, it isn't)

Have you played the entire game? Can you review it for me? None of this was an issue during the trial that I just played. It everything perfect? Nope. Then again, every single Bioware game ever has pretty much the same quirks people are killing this game for.

Eh, I had fun. Looking forward to the full game.

There is no excuse for delaying the game till fall 2017 or early 2018 they've had long enough to iron out all these issues..

It's awesome to be a beta tester these days. /s

I fully realize that games are business, but if you'd actually make a quality product without several issues people would be way more inclined to get into this business. These constant unfinished games are not helping you. They are damaging you. It hurts to see yet an other franchise being ran into a wall, because of stupid decisions by whoever is in charge.

Different priorities?

Nobody plays Zelda or Skyrim for the story, so they don't care about shitty animations and lame dialogue. Most people do play Mass Effect for the story, so it's a bit more of a problem when the dialogue is stupid and the characters look like they're from Five Nights at Freddy's.

How many games do you know that suddenly and completely change up their cinematography, animation technology, storytelling, dialogue, style of presentation, etc. after the first 8 hours of the game? I guess we just have different experiences because what I'm seeing is incredibly subpar and honestly worse than ME1 in some regards (writing, animations especially).

What gamespot, Giantbomb, pcgamer, and kotaku have said is sending off warning alarms along with what we've seen in the streams and the access gameplay. For a narrative-heavy game, it seems to falter disastrously in both presentation and writing.

There is nothing to fix here. BioWare said themselves that Andromeda will have a lighter tone. They just meant they doubled down on slapstick, after abandoning good writing and animation. It's a very respectable tradition of comedy.

Most people won't suffer through hours of shit in hopes to find the good part. I'm glad you enjoyed it, a lot of us didn't.

Wondering if I should cancel my preorder... How bad is it?

For some really minor - in the grand scheme of things - animation quirks? This is nothing like that NBA title they shitcanned, just seems like people being overly picky. DA:I had its share of shitty animations, and most people loved it....once they left the Hinterlands.

See, facial animation wouldn't put me off from playing the game, but it would put me off from BUYING it at all.

This is a $60 AAA game, show it.

What I'm seeing is pretty much par for the course for Bioware. Animation was NEVER EVER their strong suit. Thinking it would be now was setting yourself up for disappointment.

They have never released a game since going 3D that has had good to great animation.

So what's the chance that the entire first 10 hours of the game were completely scrapped and remade within the last few months and the rest of the game is polished and well written?

It really seems like they're willing to kill all hype for the game just to stick to their shitty marketing plans

I can't cancel my preorder on this due to it being through the Best Buy visa checkout promo. Fuck. Oh well. 35 bucks for this is probably going to be worth it, I guess. I hope it's not as bad as impressions are making it out to be.

The character interactions and dialog are the main reason I play Bioware games. Atrocious character models and animations make this a bargain bin buy and Mass Effect was a top 3 franchise for me last gen. Thankfully I'm not hurting for RPGs to play with Horizon Zero Dawn, Nioh, NieR Automata and soon Persona 5. Hell I haven't even played TW3 expansions yet so this is no big loss.

I can't believe I'm considering skipping a Mass Effect game for awhile.

This sucks.

I own every previous Collector's Edition of the game.

... I'm utterly shocked that I'll be waiting on this one until more of the problems get ironed out.

I agree that a lot of the character and animation work looks a bit off, sometimes even goofy, but I don't think it's bad enough to ruin the game. I've had fun with the trial and the odd facial animations honestly didn't bother me too much (even though I was worried that they would after seeing all the gifs and screenshots).

That being said, it would be nice if they fixed some of this stuff. Especially the character's weird-looking eyes (and some of the female characters' make-up which often looks like it was done by a five year-old). Not sure how realistic it is for them to fix the facial animations as I have no idea how they're made. I'd assume that they use some sort of master blendshapes for all the characters and that all scenes/conversations are simply mixed together from that set of blendshapes. If that's the case, I'm thinking it should be doable to fix the facial animations to some degree (like making the mouth/lip/cheek movements less exaggerated and maybe adding some more eyelid/brow movement) but who knows, it may well be too much effort to fix with a patch.

As for the story, I don't quite get people in here saying it's bad. For one, the trial barely even scratched the surface narratively speaking, secondly, I've found the bit of the story that is available in it quite intriguing and could definitely see it going somewhere great. Sure, there are some badly written lines here and there but then look at something like Life is Strange. That game was full of cringe-worthy, badly-written dialogue and it still managed to tell a cool story that many people fell in love with. The odd bad line isn't going to ruin the story if the plot and characters are worthwhile.

I assume this also means that the character creator is final. I was hoping that wasn't the case. The customization options are pathetic.

They will apparently add in some additional features/options for the CC via patch but we don't know how many or when exactly (except that it sounds like they haven't started working on it yet so it'll probably be a while).

This is worse than their previous games and the writing is pretty bad as well. My face is tired, Ryder saying the same line twice in a span of 20 seconds in a cutscenes ("we got this"), companies falling into your lap for no reason, being immediately railed without justification into the Bioware Space Jesus, etc.

The first part of the game is demonstratively worse than previous Bioware games (barring DA2 maybe)

Quick, post a bunch of misleading unflattering GIF's, then ask whether the Devs plan to immediately address your concerns in 3 days, then be outraged when they obviously cannot.
