NieR: Automata Spoiler Thread

i am seriously blown away. I finished earlier and despite having a major part of the true ending spoiled through the giant bombcast (seriously, fuck that gamespot guy, I know he wanted to share the awesomeness but he didn't even really seem to understand its impact in the moment) I am still sitting here contemplating what just happened.

I'll need to give it some time to cook but I honestly think it is a new entry on my personal gaming pantheon

Yeah 100% agree.

I was so looking forward to the bombcast guys playing the game and getting to that part and seeing it in it's context, but no that guy just makes it sound like the most boring and at face value thing ever.

And yes it's by far one of my favourite games this generation atleast (up there with Bloodborne/DS3).

By the way not sure if anyone noticed but the soundtrack is up for pre-order in the UK square enix store,, again comes with the bonus hacking music CD.

I thought Papa Nier was non-canon.

Is "non-canon" even a thing in this franchise?

This thing is pretty iffy looking back. Even TDI doesn't like his old writing anymore.

It's still the most informative thing about Drakengard buuut yeah.

I kinda just want to play Drakengard. Everything about it seems up my alley and I feel brave to tackle its gameplay. Just gotta find a copy.

Go for it if you're patient enough and in the mood for the surrealism. You would also need a guide!

Looks like Patrick Klepek got ending E, according to his twitter. I expect Waypoint to have something up about it soonish. Also he said he set up an interview with Yoko Taro, so hell yeah.

So the Terminals appearance looks like Manah from Drakengard (old men voice an all).

The machines becomes man(and machine) eaters like the giant babies in Drakengard.

The watchers symbol on Eve.

The connections are there, but so loosely explained, almost as it just to make people mad finding the connection. lol

Also what's up with those elevators with the apologetic machines? DLC?

Yeah, there's some running themes that seem to happen in this universe, between the Evil little girls dressed in red with old man creepy voices, white hair for the protagonists (Nier, Kaine, Zero, 2B, 9S and A2), villains turning black (Shadowlord, Gismor and Eve), Watchers symbol popping up, cannibalism (I know, only applies to humans, but still applies to humanoid machines too surely here), flowers symbolising misery (Zero, Kaine, Emil in Automata, Furiae).

Another big one is miscommunication leading to death - Pascal with the "child" machines telling them about "fear", the entire events of NieR could have been avoided if Kaine said something since she understood the Shades and only cared about revenge, Nier thinking that Shades are "evil" and vice versa, Popola and Devola leaving people in the dark and thus causing the events of the Nier universe, 2B not telling 9S about her true feelings and vice versa, Caim not being able to speak and seeing his best friend teaming up with his parent's murderer - the Black Dragon, Furiae not being to tell Caim her true feelings etc, Roc thinking that The King was personally responsible for killing his fellow wolves etc. A lot of bad shit could have been avoided in these games if the characters could communicate properly.

Taro sure likes his recurring imagery and themes, alright.

Has there ever been a breakdown of the Picture Books? I assumed it's data from 9S's previous investigations that he generated before being executed again. Is the god that comes from the volcano the machine network in the tower? Are the gifts the network diversifying the vectors? Things like Simone's beauty, Adam's hatred, Aguste's brothers, and The Forest King's (really not sure on this one) family all examples of the machines copying "mankind's failures" like that one sidequest suggests?

So do you guys think 2B and 9S were in love with each other or do you think it was more platonic than romantic? The impression I got was that 2B's love for 9S was platonic but 9S had more romantic feelings for her.

Something that repeatedly happens that's interesting and ties back into the themes of Ending E is that every paired off android/machine goes berserk when one of them is gone. We see it with Devola and Popola, we see it with Adam and Eve and we see it with 9S and 2B. Take away one and the other can't sustain the weight of the world by themselves.

Well, if those weapon stories are any sort of indication, it seems romantic on 2B's part to me.

Weapon stories are quite clear on that part and I think there are other hints there. It makes everything that happened even more depressing. And all of this emotion prohibited talks are pretty suggestive too.

Did you get 2B's message from her fligh unit in Route C? Or read the weapon stories? Or notice how jealous she got in the Amnesia side quest? Them planning a T shirt date for after the war? Or the blatant sexual imagery during ending A and B?

Saying 2B only loved him playtonically is like saying 6O was straight.

Nope. Reproductive function and gender is irrelevant when you are simply rolled off of a production line. Same applies to Replicants too, which is why they went extinct.

The ability to have sex is somewhat orthogonal to having the ability to reproduce.

Wait what message from her flight unit? Was this a cutscene or is it something you find in the world? I didn't see her reactions during the Amnesia quest as jealousy really. But maybe it was. The date I saw as cute more than anything. I haven't read the weapon stories yet either. I'm saving it for when I upgrade them all. Sorry I just refuse to believe 2B could love a man shorter than her. 21O x 9S for life. Yes I'm aware it's incesty.

Kidding of course but I did see it as a kind of really deep platonic love with some possible romance. Regardless, it was true love.

2B isn't even taller then him, it's the heels, without those there the same height. Lol

Sure they can. Just in the form of if and else statements, includes, and etc.

So not much different than my love life then.

If anyone's interested, myself and several others did a spoiler filled podcast for Automata here. Several panelists are RPG Site staffers.

We talked about Endings A through E along with a ton of side content.

This is an exceptionally good analysis of the game. Kudos.

As a 5'4" man, you have made an enemy for life today.

I finished the entire game two freakin' times and i'm stil finding new stuff
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp3J8k4mF1Q

After I gave up my save where I was clearly overleveled early (55 after Adam boss leveling)

I am now again in the middle of route C and encountered glitches/bug I did not the first time.

For example:

In route B I could sleep next to 2B at the very beginning when I should've boot her up

Then right after that where he talks about voice volume (I left this menu pretty fast, since I did that already), he said HELLOOO HELLLO CAN YOU HEAR ME, when 2B just woke up, pretty funny actually

Then at the start of route C, the bridge disapperead where I acutally have to go to lower the anti air defense, which resulted me in falling down the cliff

And I encouter 3x a very annoying bug, which I NEVER encountered ever in my playthrough before.

Loading Map.... (I waited even 20 minutes, both times) seems that just means, close the application, it froze

2B isn't even taller then him, it's the heels, without those there the same height. Lol

I was actually under the impression that 9S was supposed to be a young boy (like 14 or 15) and 2B an adult woman, so that's why I thought it would be weird if she was also in love with him. My impression of that did change a little as I played through the game though. I'm gonna look for 2B's flight unit and read the weapon stories as soon as I upgrade them.

So not much different than my love life then.

2B the type of girl that like her mandroids 6' and up. Find her on that heightism twitter.

The ability to have sex is somewhat orthogonal to having the ability to reproduce.

Its irrelevant to function; machine or android everyone is basically a disposable weapon.

As I wrote in an earlier post, the engine that drives the story is the ineffable loneliness of existence. Its practically spelled out in the "kind king" storybook where the machines nestled together forever, without really knowing why.

One of the most poignant bits in the game for me.

Just got the Y ending while doing my last Quest for 100%. LMAO, I shoulda known
exploding emils!
.

Edit: what do you get to keep when starting over again? skins unlocks? hats? weapons? chips?

Making them look human is irrelevant to function too. The machines clearly don't and it is explicitly spelled out, but it says nothing of the androids.

Replicants definitely have genitalia. See: Kaine. They're just sterile.

Yes, because they were intended as "empty vessels" for a static population size. Obviously replicants are androids in the sense that their name-sakes in Blade Runner are androids, they are biological.

That being said gender is pretty much irrelevant; the kids in the Aerie torment Kaine because she's "different", a xenophobic reaction that's entirely consistent with that faction.

The important part however is that Replicants think they are human, which is where the problems begin :D

Androids and machine life-forms are entirely aware of what they are.

Androids in game directly mention having lovers, 9S has a modeled bulge. They fuck my man

Not really. Its just a reminder of who they are fighting for, and the difference between them and the enemy.

Androids love their human creators too, its just how they were made.

Sure, I'm just saying Replicants can and do bone.

As for the androids, I think it's useless to speculate. There is enough evidence on both sides that it's just a matter of waiting for Taro make the call. Either answer would be reasonable and appropriate.

I dunno. Look at it this way: During Jackass's research we learn that androids derive pleasure from killing machines; why would it be desirable to implement a competing reward system for an entirely redundant reproductive apparatus?

The assumption being made is that sex is as pleasurable for an android as it is for a human. Meaning that expressing "love" might take a different form.

2B isn't actually that much taller than 9S. She's roughly the same height as him without the heels. The blindfold makes her look older than she really is, but I imagine they could come off similar in age if they were dressed normally in a regular setting. Or just go on their shopping date.

With Nier having wiped himself from existence, Kaine is the one who's known for killing the Shadowlord, right? If any Replicant was recorded for doing so, anyway.

I doubt anyone remembers who Kainè is. I mean, no one's exclaiming "hey, that skeleton ball that fucked up the planet is outside singing again!"
