Saying a country is divided is often some political PR speak, usually to try and instill fear or negative feelings. Like, it's always a bad thing for a country to be working through differences of opinions. Get in line, be unified, or you're problematic! You're a jester! You're upsetting and dividing the people! How dare you, be quiet and stop giving us a headache from enforcing our reign!
So basically, an authoritarian word play, in many cases. The technicality behind the meaning of the word division is the case indeed, but it's ALWAYS the case. No polls over go 100% vs 0%. There is ALWAYS "division" in a country.
It's how you hash out differences, debate and attempt to honestly influence minds. Too often in UK politics, it goes right to smearing, lying, othering, abusing, name-calling, digging up dirt, character assassinations, and so on. Passion is good, a lot of the nastiness that follows politics isn't. Give people facts, evidence and heartfelt pleas and leave it at that for them to debate and try and make their minds up as a country.
You're missing the point. She's saying people need to stop being divided and unite to make this work. Whether you voted leave or stay, this is happening and whining about it and causing further division isn't going to achieve anything. She's right.

What possible future are we looking at Children of Men or V for Vendetta?
Yep. It almost seemed like we were joining the EU. This is possibly more evidence the UK has toned down their rhetoric and actually try and obtain some sense of an acceptable deal.

That's what I meant; once it becomes more apparent beyond conjecture that May and the Conservative government are not going to get a fair deal that helps all of the UK (I know I just said it would be beyond conjecture whilst talking about an uncertain future, but I'm pessimistic about our ability to command negotiations), and given a more driven campaign for an infy ref, learning from the campaigning mistakes made by both the first referendum and the EU (like, not being coherent with arming the public with hard facts and information), you'll see a Scotland that is both being informed, and is seeing first hand what a UK led by the Tories is going to look like beyond the EU.

Today, the European Council received a letter from the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, notifying the United Kingdom's intention to leave the European Union. This notification follows the referendum of 23 June 2016 and starts the withdrawal process under Article 50 of the Treaty. We regret that the United Kingdom will leave the European Union, but we are ready for the process that we now will have to follow.
For the European Union, the first step will now be the adoption of guidelines for the negotiations by the European Council. These guidelines will set out the overall positions and principles in light of which the Union, represented by the European Commission, will negotiate with the United Kingdom.
In these negotiations the Union will act as one and preserve its interests. Our first priority will be to minimise the uncertainty caused by the decision of the United Kingdom for our citizens, businesses and Member States. Therefore, we will start by focusing on all key arrangements for an orderly withdrawal.
We will approach these talks constructively and strive to find an agreement. In the future, we hope to have the United Kingdom as a close partner.

So we'll be waiting for the Tory's to get voted out then and we should be golden?
Gets those Irish passports boys, exploit the current situation (there are new opportunities), and find a life for yourselves.

The text of the letter is out.
Very clearly equating the trade arrangement with security co-operation. That'll put backs up in Europe. Ballsy but given the reaction when she tried it in the Lancaster House speech, probably unwise.
So even if we don't believe immigrants are the source of all our woes we should just accept they are and support whatever racist policies come out of this to make it work. Right.
Not how it works in the real world.
How you do 'stop being divided' if you completely disagree with something?
If she is still peddling fantastical nonsense, people shouldn't get on board with it. Also people should totally get on board while being shackled to those intent on throwing themselves off a cliff.
If shes' serious about what she's saying, she needs to be the one to build bridges and showing - ideally with policy - that what she is doing benefits everyone.
You can't just demand unity.
Really? Nothing she has done has indicated anything that we need unity. Why should we unite now. She pushed for hard brexit, she only appealed to those who voted to leave while those who voted to stayed are basically being told to shut up and unite.
Nonsense.
The entire 'please unite' line is purely about quieting dissent.
Remainers aren't doing damage to the country by expressing our views. We aren't going on strike. We aren't being violent. We are simply expressing our concerns with the plan the government is putting forward.
Theresa may probably is right that complaining won't achieve anything, but that's only because she's a close minded, belligerent, arrogant, and utterly power-hungry leader who ignores anything that suggests she might be wrong.
Division never stopped people whining about the UKs membership of the EU in the first place.
Obviously you said the same thing to leavers before the referendum though right?
Nah, you broke it you bought it, it's up to the Leavers to fix it. I want my gold shitting unicorn.
Your move Corbyn....

You can disagree with something but if it's happening by democratic vote then what can you do? Turning on your peers will achieve nothing.
Angus is getting rowdy, someone throw him a snickers!but he ain't wrong

Why not? We're all adults?
/clap
May saying "There will be no return to the hard border" re: Northern Ireland. Not sure how she can make such a definitive statement at this time.
But Thresa May said unity.
What you talking about?
It will be easy.
We are in control now.
We just need every single one of the 27 other EU countries to give us permission to trade/travel with our largest trade partner.
Before, we were decision makers in the room with the power to veto anything the EU wanted to do that could affect us negatively.
Now we wait outside the room and hope for the best.
Like I said,
Complete, control.

Lets just embrace chaos then and hope for the worst? Your thinking doesn't make sense.
Obligatory.
What's so fantastical about trying to instil positivity in the nation? All eyes are on her. If she admitted she thought we were doomed what will that do to the country?
It is a bit opportunistic (from the SNP) but put it this way, you need an opposition with some spice, as long as they keep it from getting personal, smearing, lying and being nasty. Labour could learn a thing or two from the SNP at trying to put pressure on and oppose the Tories.

See the "heckling" part.
But yeah, the memes, pressure, debates and sure, "division", are just going to keep coming.
The tories were elected does that mean everyone has to support them now?
An adult can accept that people bitterly disagree with them, it's a democracy.
Stop being divisive and support my position.
Should've put the /s in my post. We already see a divide going on right now and I agree that she basically just did this on her own without any consulting. At this point I've given up on the Labour party and hope the SNP can show everyone how bad this is
So Top Men?
Jeremy is like Salmond. They both have some principled stances, but shit, they are not leaders. Corbyn needs to step back down to number "2", or just an MP. He is not fit to lead. The sooner Labour sort that out the sooner they can somehow try to get back to rebuilding.
Lets just embrace chaos then and hope for the worst? Your thinking doesn't make sense.
Theresa May can fuck off, I'll never get behind Brexit and she's just using it to further her own career. But Thresa May said unity.
