Jim Sterling, Laura Kate Dale: Warning to Yooka-Laylee Pre-Orderers

I think Team17 is acting as the publisher. Playtonic should be developing all versions I believe. I could be wrong.

Playtonic is handling PC and Switch, Team17 is handling Xbone and PS4.

Mighty No. 9, Part II?
Y-L could turn out to be the worst game ever made and it'd still be less of a disaster than MN9. How oblivious do you have to be to have a crowdfunding campaign for a spin-off game and anime series before the game they spun-off from is even released?

Jim's tastes are all over the place. I don't put any stock into his opinions as far as it related to how I'll feel.

Laura going along with him, though? Makes me nervous.

Unity is great, if you're concepting and prototyping. It allows easy, fast iteration, with minimal setup.

Finished product should be implemented using something performant, though.

Right, this is why I said there is a good reason for it, and not simply "because it is an outlier."

Ok, maybe I misread your post.

But I am still not sure if bringing actual statistics in play makes sense, the method of reviewing between persons varies a lot and the (metacritic) sample size is very small. The average is a nice indicator for what to expect of a game's quality as per professional reviewers, nothing more.

It is fair that people don't align with Sterlings tastes and thus discard his opinion because they know it will not apply to them, offcourse.

GREED IS GOOD

Hopefully Unity 2017's new compiler and easier multi-thread coding will help with this problem. Like Unity is great for small scale games, but yeah once you try to do too much it kinda flops a bit

I was hoping this game was going to be good but all the videos I've seen really haven't made me think that.... And now this.. Ugh

Mighty No. 9, Part II?

I was disappointed by the footage they have shown thus far in many ways, but at least it does seem to attempt to be an actual spiritual successor rather than whatever the hell MN.9 was, because that most certainly was not a MegaMan callback.

Still, I hope Sterling is wrong on this one, I would love for this genre to do well.

I always thought it looked super iffy but I'm not a parade shitter so I just never said much. Not even performance..I just think it looked that fun or engaging. Should be interesting.

Nope

Playtonic were only handling the PC and (Switch?) versions themselves, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Correct - http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/yook...rnally-handling-wii-u-and-pc-versions/0167997

The mentioned it around the time the game got delayed. That was back when PC and WiiU were the internal projects. They said after the WiiU issues in development that they were in contact with nintendo to work on a Switch version, so that might still be the case.

The studio also detailed how the development partnership with Team17 is working. The firm is internally handling the Wii U and PC versions of the game, while Team17 is working on porting the title to Xbox One and PS4.

When asked why the firm was internally handling Wii U over the other platforms, writer Andy Robinson said: "We naturally have so many backers who opted for Wii U. Because of the size of the team, we couldn't take on all the consoles. You can imagine from a developer stand-point, that porting from PC to PS4 and Xbox One is slightly more straightforward than porting to Wii U.

"I also think it feels right playing it on a Nintendo system to some people.

"But the other versions will be fantastic as well."

Never once thought it looked choppy at all personally. Also I don't understand why someone would say think twice when you've already pre-ordered it.

This is true, nobody has ever been disappointed with a game after preordering it. No reason to think twice if there are reports of issues with it.

"I broke the embargo by dropping this but I didn't break the embargo because I didn't put out a score!!"

This is not exactly fair play, Sterling & LKD.

The tech issues are certainly a significant concern. Seems like the game doesn't run well at all on consoles, and I'm especially worried about the Switch version as a result. Hopefully the latter will turn out to be acceptable with Playtonic handling it in-house and all that.

Gameplay-wise? I mean, the footage I've seen looks an awful lot like Tooie, which I'm 100% ok with, but certainly it isn't the kind of thing everyone wants to play. They don't appear to be aiming to modernize the collectathon 3D platformer here, it looks more like a "what if Banjo 3 were made during the N64 era" type of game, but with modern graphics. And I do think that's what the people wanted? But I'm sure that alone'll make for polarizing reviews because a lot of people don't dig those games. I've been fully expecting that since the start.

That's not to say Yooka-Laylee can't be a disappointment to Banjo fans of course. Personally I still love those kind of games and find them to be perfectly playable in this day and age, so the impressions that'll matter to me the most are those of people who feel similar about these 3D platformers and are comparing Y-L to that stuff. And I don't know where Sterling and LKD are coming from in that regard if they aren't just referring to the technical aspect here. These pre-embargo statements are annoying to me because we pretty much can't get the clarification I'm looking for.

If this game is at all like the old Banjo Kazooie games, even with all their flaws, I'll be happy. We'll see.

Or yeah, this in summary. Plenty of flaws to be found in Banjo, especially Tooie if you ask me, but I'm expecting a Banjo game here, warts and all. I just hope this does that well and that enough people want it if so.

If worse comes to worse we still have A Hat in Time

Collect-a-thons will live on!

I'm not the biggest fan of the genre and I think Yooka-Laylee has looked a bit...unoriginal? Bland? since reveal. But goddamn A Hat In Time looks better and better every time it's shown, I hope it hits this year.

Other previews have been more positive. I wonder if it's because those people are not as far as Jim and Laura or if they like it in spite of the technical problems.

Either way I'm getting a copy since I backed it on Kickstarter.

You misunderstand me. When I pre-order a game I can't go back on that decision but I think I also explained it wrong. I meant digital pre-order on Xbox One. I'm sure you can go back in your decision if it's about physical copies.

It's sad that he broke the embargo. Hopefully, he and his co-host will face the appropriate repercussions to the full extent of the law. Other publishers should think twice before giving him review copies of their game.

I think whether you put stock in any reviewer is to see if their tastes match up with yours. Who here thinks that Hyrule Warriors Legends is a 9.5 or Quantum Break is 8.5? Do you think that Quantum Break is blatantly better than Uncharted 4? If your tastes align with his, then you probably want to put stock in his reviews. The rest of us will ignore him.

Jims opinion is worthless but yeah Lauras isnt.

I think the problem with this game is that a very very small part of the dreamteam at 90s Rare claim to be able to make a sequel to Banjo.

Never understood the excitement for this stuff

https://youtu.be/Hc6tV3b2GEo

You don't understand the excitement of running around a big world collecting stuff and doing challenges? People point to this footage as evidence of the game being a bit shit but personally I can't wait to get my hands on it so I can play for myself. In 13 minutes of footage the person playing only does about two or three things that I can see would lead to getting a Pagie? That's at least 22 more unaccounted for, and the world hasn't even been expanded yet. Supposedly it looks "empty" but if you watched some footage of any Banjo-Tooie world where the player just runs around and barely completes any challenges it would look empty too.

I'm seeing a lot of Jims taste is random posts. Which I don't agree with at all. But if the general consensus is what he's saying once those reviews come out, I expect a lot of people here to eat crow.

I wouldn't trust Jim Sterling when it comes to Nintendo. He obviously has a beef with them as of late. His review score and criticisms about Zelda BOTW were fine but his troll comments like "dickhead moves" and references to "10/10" reviews show that he just wanted to provide a contrarian view to gain publicity. And he did. During his "playing the victim" phase his twitter followers spiked astronomically as people felt sorry for him.

It would have been better it he reviewed the game without the context of the 10/10 reviews like other reviewers. His review seemed like a reaction to the other reviews.

I'm assuming this is a new copy pasta.

Jontron is still in a Hat in Time, right?

I'm not giving up hope for this yet though. Could just be platform specific under-performance.

Then what's the point of embargo?

I'm playing full version on PS4 and (in my opinion) that's all I can say before April 4th.

It is kinda weird to allow previews so close to release, at some point that has to just be mini review right? I'm personally just doing a review.

Hopefully it ends up turning out ok. The world needs good Rare-esq platformers and I had high hopes this would deliver. Jim's tastes don't match mine though, so who knows...

The Switch delay along with the non-committal to a physical version means no buy from me until price parity with the other versions if a physical release happens or not at all if it doesn't and ends up launching anywhere near Mario.

Well, not all is lost just yet and A Hat in Time is also supposed to come put this year.
