My wild guess is: Russia is planning to pull out of Syria and let the US get into another quagmire in the region, fueling the refugee crisis further. They probably told Assad he could go ahead with the chemical attack, knowing Trump would attack to show he's not like Obama.

We'll see if this was really unexpected to Russia, but I highly doubt it.

I imagine Putin will give Trump another warning. I think at this point Putin may be really tired of how much his puppet is really "failing".
 
Another question, how does the russian/syrian relationship works? one will think that if they were allies they will help them in this situation, not staying silent knowing that an attack will be held there
 
It is really strange to see such a fast reaction from Trump to pictures of chemical weapon victims so soon after so many civilians, including children, got torn to pieces by high speed chunks of metal shot from a US gunship in Yemen.

or got blown into tiny pieces by US bombs falling on a mosque in Mosul.

Not even the faintest reaction from Trump to either of those events.

One would almost think that he is mainly concerned about his approval ratings at home and didn't see any way to personally benefit from the first two events, but saw a big opportunity from pictures of dead syrian children. But that would mean he is a cold blooded ego-centric narcissist who is entirely divorced from reality.

Maybe about US policy regarding Syria, and what we would like to see happen.

The Trump tack on Assad was stated last week (from regime change to non regime change) and has been reversed over the past few days (now back to regime change).

THIS is the Trump difference. Incoherence. Incoherence that our adversaries can try to take advantage of.

Much more complicated than that.

Trump has a window to do stuff but after a while he has to ask congress for an aumf. What's the boundary of needing an aumf is a bit of a grey area. For instance, in Libya action went much longer than the requisite period needed for congressional approval, but boener considered the act requiring Obama to seek said approval unconstitutional anyways so he never pressed the executive over it.

Untill congress decides to press the issue and take it to the courts (I doubt it over bombing Syria) the entire force projection issue remains a huge grey area in the constitution.
 
So it was a single base the target? that sounds way smaller than what I had in mind. It doesn't solve much but at least it shouldn't lead to escalation.

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced this will end up being a big show without any real consequences. Trump needed something to boost his favorability and this is the perfect show of force. Russia is informed beforehand, the air field are destroyed under the pretense of stopping further chemical attacks, and Assad is annoyed at the loss of air fields but it doesn't significantly hinder his operations. Russia is still free to back Assad and Trump is able to thump his chest, pretending to have saved Syria from more chemical attacks. The U.S. fails to follow up with any additional action and Assad/Putin gets to continue to murder the Syrian people. But hey, at least they're not being slaughtered with nerve gas, right?

The already is a measure in the Senate (supported by Obama) that Im sure the will spin back up, and it will support what just happening

I don't think Trump's numbers would go up on this. People in the US are sick of those wars, and care very little in general about conflicts in the ME other than that the US should leave.

Yeah, everything else is "fine" and a "success", but this latest attack got a massive amount of attention, couldn't be bullshitted, and you're damn right they realized this could be a boost for them.

Trump just signed on the dotted line.

Evidence used there is the weapons system and sophistication of the attack.

The fact that it's not as bad as it could have been opens a possibility that there's more to this than is immediately apparent (e.g. just enough action to rattle NK, just enough action to placate domestic hawks, just enough action to change the narrative and negative press in the current news cycle, etc). However, nearly everything is "not as bad as it could have been".

Analyzing the level of escalation in the coming days, as well as the reaction from other countries will hopefully be illuminating regarding how this all plays out.

Dammit, stop with the whataboutism, a deliberate chemical attack on civilians isn't the same thing as collateral damage from a regular bombing targeting ISIL extremists. The method and intent does matter.

I think this is accurate.
It is telling that he needs the popularity boost so much that he is prepared to blow up at least some of his cult. Some of the alt-right are officially "off the trump train" now, or so they claim. However I can see them finding an angle that lets them back on again so we'll see.

The deal was tha Russia help Assad get rid of the chemical weapons.

They cannot come out strongly against this without looking fundamentally weak or incompetent.
