Nintendo Direct on April 12 (3PM PT, Switch/3DS, mainly Splarms)

Alternatively they could make "New Super Mario Bros. Switch" instead. That would be the preferable option.

Why on Earth is everyone so obsessed with ports all of a sudden? I remember years back Nintendo was (unfairly) criticized for re-releasing and remaking everything and now people are practically asking for it. So weird.

Like you I would be most interested in a new Mario game compared to a port, but I think a lot of Switch owners skipped Wii U so some of the port excitement comes from there. On a separate note, I believe around the time Mario Maker released for Wii U, Tanaka mentioned that they were planning to challenge themselves in a new direction for the next 2D Mario game. As a result, I expect the New series has been completed for now and we will see something entirely different for the next game. I love the New series but I'll be glad to see something different.

People tend to get angry about games they don't actually care about, I've noticed. Let's not pretend GAF has an overwhelming amount of Nintendo fans, a lot of people simply see a thread title and post their negative thoughts.

It happens for all companies though, people shit posted about The Last of Us getting a remaster too whereas people who were interested were obviously excited for it.

It's a weird human action where we have to discourage things that don't effect us. I think it's just amplified on Nintendo topics because of the general demographic here. We have plenty of people who like Nintendo but it's clear that many users actively hate the company.

On another note, I wouldn't mind Metroid Prime Hunters in HD. It's quite a nice game and the visuals are clear in high resolution.

This is actually offensive

Not even joking, if Nintendo did this I would just be completely done with them. Fuck that

An astute assessment of the behavior often displayed here. Anyways, it feels good to see another Direct coming our way! I love when they only announce it a day or two ahead.

That's very promising, can't wait to see what's in store.

lol they wouldn't dare. They knew they fucked up with the 3DS game because when it was time for Federation Force to launch, they hardly did any marketing towards it.

Anyways, I hope we get some new Mario Kart 8 footage in this direct. I want the pink sparks to be explained

Would you like to be reminded of the Wii U's userbase?

I can't imagine what that has to do with anything. If someone wants to play a game that was released on the Wii U, you can go out and purchase a Wii U to play it, nothing is stopping you from doing so.

Nintendo doesn't need to be porting every game from the Wii U over to the Switch because someone didn't buy their previous console. If they want to play it badly enough they can purchase the hardware to do so.

If I decide to skip out on the Switch should I just portbeg for everything on Nintendo's new console instead? No, because that's not Nintendo's fault, that's on me. Should I beg Sony to port all of their PS3 software to the PS4 because I didn't buy a PS3? Nope, if I want to play PS3 games I'll go out and buy a PS3.

any chance of that old timey ace attorney getting localised
oh yeah and maybe some more news on the Strange journey and radiant historia remakes.

The success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is probably going to convince Nintendo to release quite a few more Wii U ports (if they aren't already planning to do so). Brace yourself.

It might be time for you to accept that remasters and re-releases are a new normal for this industry and the reason is due to the fact that consumers want them. And it's not just people who skipped out on previous systems. I own both a PS3 and Wii U and have already purchased a number of re-releases this generation. And I'll buy quite a few more, I'm sure of it.

I've got no issue with people port begging for the switch. People do this with every new console at launch when content is thin.

Still in my case i would love to see games come to switch purely for the portability aspect. Even if i did already own them on Wii U

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe makes sense. It was their most successful Wii U title, just as Mario Kart Wii was the most successful Wii title. (outside of Wii Sports)

Super Smash Bros. makes sense as well. A lot of developer hours and money was put into both games and it makes sense to bring them over to new hardware when they're both already so robust and fully featured.

Beyond that, there isn't much that needs to make it over. Anything else that would be ported should just be getting a sequel instead.

Well I would definitely feel pretty outraged, so your little hobby would be in full swing.

Awesome. Folks getting upset over videogames is definitely a lot of fun. That Bayonetta 2 thread and the associated Twitter posts are solid gold.

But a lot of people don't want to play them on the Wii U. They want to play them on the Switch. Because they actually want the Switch. Nintendo will be happy to oblige them.

But what if I don't want a Switch? Nintendo should just port all their Switch games to whatever follows up the Switch instead.

.

Pokken (new AC characters didnt get WiiU treatment)
Mario Maker (I mean the 3DS version just did over a million in japan alone)
Hyrule Warriors (maybe Hyrule Warriors 2 with a BotW focus)
Bayonetta 2 (because why the hell not)

But what if I don't want a Switch? Nintendo should just port all their Switch games to whatever follows up the Switch instead.

if the Switch only sells around 13 million then yes it would behoove Nintendo to port the best games to the next piece of hardware so they can have a shot at a larger audience

I'm sure plenty of Switch games will find their way onto the successor. But also, Nintendo will make those decisions based on how the Switch sells and overall market research, not one pointlessly bitter NeoGAF poster's opinion.

I think by now we all know that Nintendo sees the Wii U as a failure and embarrassment. They don't want to look back on the Wii U years unless it can't be help and they certainly don't want some of their best work to be forever marooned on that washout console. For any other console, you might have a point, but the unspoken message here is that the Switch is their "do-over" and, in addition to its own games, will act as a vessel to games that had been conjured begrudgingly to their previous machine. And it's a message with which some fans and consumers can sympathize.

Pokken 2 (with the arcade characters plus more.)
Super Mario Maker 2 (With all new parts and pieces, a bunch of Nintendo-created content, new amiibo costumes, etc.)
Hyrule Warriors 2 (BotW Content, New Story Mode, etc.)
Bayonetta 3 (Self-Explanatory)

These would all be preferable to Wii U ports.

Announced a Kid Icarus: Uprising port would be much appreciated.

Same goes for all the 3DS Fire Emblem games to Switch.

They will announce new zelda amiibos
I'm pretty confident of that

They might also mention online membership or something, dince mario kart is coming, but not to full detail, of this i am not so sure

Oh well

Hopefully more detail on online since that's soon

I don't think people are saying they don't want these things. They're being realistic. The difference in resources and time in a port and full sequel is huge.

It doesn't seem to be generating much buzz but I would love to see a release date for Celeste. It looks like a really cool 2-D Platformer with the great soundtrack.

Every global general Direct has come with at least one new reveal

Yeah, if they don't specifically say this is an exclusively game, series or system focused direct (though not even true with that last one) there's going to be something new. Nothing especially major, of course, but definitely something. I'm putting a bet on another Wii U port/remaster.

There are some points to consider here. One, the cost of porting a game with a few extra features or without them is cheaper, in some cases way cheaper, than development of a full sequel; two, for anyone who didn't have a Wii U the difference between in value between a port and a sequel is not major, if anything, story oriented players may feel intimidated by skipping predecessors; and finally three, Nintendo is not banking on surviving the Switch on people who bought a Wii U.

Honestly Pokken "2" and especially Super Mario Maker "2" would not be a huge surprise given the potentially iterative nature of these games but "let's develop Bayonetta 3 in two years and not additionally port Bayonetta 1 and 2 in a few months because the porting cost is too much" is a somewhat bizarre stance.

I thought we wouldn't get a Direct until E3 in order to "reserve" surprises, just a dedicated one or small videos to announce characters/features and release dates for Arms and Splatoon 2.

This is pretty similar to a dedicated broadcast, but with space for one or two new reveals. Smash and Pokémon Stars (if real) would be probably announced at E3 and a dedicated presentation respectively, the same for Retro's project. Octopath Traveler, SMT and Suda's new game seem to be early in development, so trailers for those are unlikely. Assuming XC2 and Odissey are late this year, they won't talk about those either.

We could learn more about DQXI, USFII and FE:W, but what else? Skyrim? Something from Ubisoft?

That's still not enough speed control to properly replicate the aiming.

I've played...50 or so hours of multiplayer in it? You need speed.
That's true, it was my go to 3DS game back in the day, also have around 50 hours! I guess I'm thinking more about getting it playable on the Switch rather than a definitive version, an unlikely move from Nintendo.

Yeah I think there's a near 0% chance a Bayonetta 1+2 collection doesn't get released on the Switch ahead of a hypothetical 3rd game.

well..yeah, sequels are always preferred.

but a Pokken port makes the most sense out of all those games. Wii U didn't get certain characters, and the game would sell well without much work tbh. Arcade version shows it already has good shaders, just an increase in resolution.

It would sell well too.

Was just thinking about what could be announced and then started listing in my head the hypothetical Nintendo titles for 2018 and 2019. I hope Nintendo keep up the rate of first party output that the first 9 months will see over the following 2 years, could be amazing time to be a Nintendo fan.

Oh right, good thinking, there are those leaked Zelda amiibos. Now would be a great time to reveal them, perhaps in conjunction with more details on DLC Pack 1.

What really excites me is that by the time 2017 is over we will already have Zelda, Kart, 3D Mario, and Splatoon. It took nearly three full years to get all of those games on the Wii-U. I really hope we see different franchises come back in the next few years.
