Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

Only in the us right?

And the uk. Besides 360 dominated with strong sales in na alone. It's the only territory that truly shapes the perception of a console.

Then the hype wore off and the Xbox One had its worst February this generation. If that's what we can expect from the Scorpio, then I'm not sure why anyone would think it'll change anything.

Scorpio in many ways is ms truly being sorry for what became of the XBONE, it's them returning to their 360 powerhouse days. It sort of felt like ms themselves forgot about the Xbox S after the holiday period, I'd be extremely surprised if the same were to happen with Scorpio.

I mean, where are these surprises going to come from? Having a hard time thinking of who could be working on them besides obvious ones like Sucker Punch

People have been talking about DMC5 for years

FromSoft might reveal what they have on their own time

I honestly think they could have a 'quiet year' just concentrating on gameplay demos for games that are already announced - God of War, Spider-Man, Days Gone, Wild, GT Sport, Everybody's Golf, Uncharted: TLL, as well as a bunch of VR/digital/indie games - and still have a great show. Heck, if it's anywhere near ready they could chuck in a gameplay demo for Death Stranding and I'm sure the crowd would go crazy.

It wasn't that interesting when Pro was released. Seriously are people expecting the Scorpio to take the world by storm and Sony should be worried? lol

Well to be honest, Pro reveal didn't exactly make a good impression and Sony barely pushed the thing during the holidays. I'm sure MS is going to give Scorpio the new gen console treatment even if it's only a mid gen console. So yeah I don't think Sony should be worried with all the games they have in their pockets but they definitely should keep an eye out.

Regardless of the Scorpio and Switch, with all those marketing deals with all the biggest blockbuster games in the holiday season, PS4 will probably easily come out on top, especially if they bundle them all.

And the uk. Besides 360 dominated with strong sales in na alone. It's the only territory that truly shapes the perception of a console.

They only won two months in the UK.

This comes off like spin.

When did they say that they were tackling multiple projects at once? I thought that they reverted to their original approach of dedicating the bulk of their workforce to a single endeavour, while allowing a small group to start pre-production stuff on a new, yet to be fully invested in project.

Yeah, I remember them explicitly stating in the gameinformer footage that "multiple projects" was a mistake, and that they're much more comfortable with doing one production and one pre-production. The "multiple projects" PLASTICA-MAN was referring to is probably them being at the point where they're already thinking up what to do next.

Here. They definitely aren't working on multiple projects beyond a production and pre-production team, which is currently Lost Legacy and TLOU:II. The next project will almost definitely be bootstrapped by Bruce Straley once he comes back, maybe after a period on the TLOU:II team or whatever. I just don't see Bruce Straley, one of the most talented people in the industry who potentially just passed over the hump of basically being in the last decade of his career, come back from a sabbatical to waste his time on reviving an antiquated fan-service mascot platformer. And similarly, I don't see the team after that (which will probably be the new Lost Legacy duo, or perhaps even a new duo) wanting to choose doing that same thing over making their own stamp on the company's legacy. Like, again, hear Even Wells speak about how important their ambitions are to them. Retreading where you've been before is the antithesis to ambition. I remember the same being said about Crash. It's just not happening guys. I will eat a proverbial hat if Naughty Dog ever touches Jak again. That's not to say another studio won't though.

Sucker Punch is up next fam, they gon deliver that sweet gameplay reveal
At this point I'd consider it a bigger surprise if Sucker Punch isn't there. I guess the genre of their new game could surprise. But I was thinking more 'I wasn't expecting that!' announcements which I'm not anticipating any of Sony's studios coming out with due to their largely full plates. Although..

Games published by Sony would still count, wouldn't they? While almost all of heir owned studios' upcoming projects have been accounted for - except for Sucker Punch's new production and a possible Japan Studio work in the making-, nothing should have prevented them from making deals, ala Spiderman. I was told that they have quite the second Party network, and owing to their dramatic lead over their direct competitor, they would hardly need to court partners...

...This could certainly happen. Like Sanzaru on Sly and Sumo Digital on LBP. Sanzaru deserve so much better than what they're currently doing. :(

This. It could be huge if it stayed a PlayStation exclusive.

To be fair; it's a Rockstar game so it would be huge either way. Being exclusive would have very little bearing on that.

I think Sanzaru wanted to create a Batman Arkham-like Sly game (which would've been freaking fantastic) but couldn't due to budget constraints.

A darker (not Jak II edgy darker) Sly game would be fantastic with gameplay like Batman's slow one-by-one takedown stealth system thing.

Ah man, that would be great. Set it in a mid-sized open Metroidvania environment, more focus on stealth or surprise attacks, a slightly more mature tone, a layered environment with lots of verticality and that could be amazing.

What do you think we'll see from God of War this time around? A gameplay demo again or just a 3 minute story trailer of sorts showcasing bosses, level variety and story info?

Gameplay demo that looks more like traditional GOW. Lots of enemies and craziness, huge setpiece/boss fight. Quell some of the "walking sim" concerns

I agree with Heisey on this - they'll probably show more gameplay, and it will probably focus on scale and combat.

Yeah, TLOU2... That's a HUGE card to play imo. I mean, there are never any guarantees, but it sure seems to point to the notion that they have even bigger cards than that.

I think TLoU2 has the potential to be the biggest-selling exclusive this gen. The first game must have done near 10 million sales, and I can see this doing a good 20% more than that. It'll probably also be cross-gen as well, so it'll have a long sales tail on PS5.

I honestly think there's a good opening for slower tactical shooters at the moment. Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon have totally given that idea up and although Socom has always had a strong multiplayer element I think the demand for a high-quality campaign would be high as well.

So for the remainder of the year sony still has:

Wipeout omega
Patapon
Loco roco ps4
Uncharted LL
Gran Turismo

And potentially:
Hot shots golf
Knack 2 (holiday kids bundle)
Matterfall
Ni no kuni 2

On top of several 3rd party deals... seem pretty impressive and 2018 kicks off in similar fashion for them too

I really don't see Matterfall happening this year. They haven't even released Ex Machina yet, and we know pretty much nothing about Matterfall beside the original CGI trailer. I can't see it coming out in the next 8 months.

It does beg the question what their HW strategy will look like this fall.

In years past it was all but assumed that doing a CoD bundle in the holidays was a sure-thing, but last year Sony prioritized profits during the peak sales period and went with only a UC4 bundle.

Battlefront and Destiny were both bundles that have done very well for Sony. CoD remains an industry titan. RDR2 is long time coming, and has huge franchise growth potential.

It'll be curious to see what gets what; in terms of mainstream bundles, premium bundles or different approaches altogether.

First-party I can see them pushing Horizon and Uncharted 4 in bundles this Christmas. Third party I reckon it'll be Destiny 2 and Battlefront 2.

Ah that's a better way of putting it

Huh didn't know bethesda is planning to release something this year

I think it's fairly likely one or both of The Evil Within 2 and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus will get revealed at E3 and come out this year.

Regardless of the Scorpio and Switch, with all those marketing deals with all the biggest blockbuster games in the holiday season, PS4 will probably easily come out on top, especially if they bundle them all.

Yup it's all about th games and that's what consumers care most about.

this is forum perception mate. There's a host of issues you aren't acknowledging that affects sales

- Price
-Real world graphics difference with Pro/XBox isn't huge
- PS4 library is bigger and more varied and not slowing
- PS4 user base is bigger, more "play with my friends" buyers
- Scorpio is a tech jump, not a new way to play gaming
- Switch might outsell everything lol

This graphical difference isn't the big gap like original Xbox and PS2, and still not many cared about that one. Add in to take advantage of these boxes to the fullest most people need to replace their TV's, and it's even more niche.

MS is doing well with Scorpio and marketing it better, it has great specs, more powerful than Pro and great software features. But remember, the underdog often has to do all these things to stay relevant. The big fundamental difference is that Sony did this last gen with games (PS+ first party output) and MS seems to be trying to do this with power and features. I'm not too sure it will light the world on fire when a huge talking point is about older games looking/running better. Games aren't like movies where the standards were established long ago. Many games are genuinely hard to go back to after playing a more modern version of similar gameplay. Outside of forums, B/C is not that big a deal, the fact that MS has to use usage stats and features in its big push to why you even want the console is kinda shaky to me. New fresh gaming experiences sell hardware, that simply will never change.

It wasn't that interesting when Pro was released. Seriously are people expecting the Scorpio to take the world by storm and Sony should be worried? lol

Pro wasn't a big deal because Sony didn't make it a big deal.

The whole message was very subdued. Hell, has Sony even had a single pro bundle since release?

Scorpio on the other hand is all Ms can talk about. They are going to push it very heavily.

Makes more sense to promote Horizon for PS4 PRO since that game is a show piece for PS4PRO.

Eh, I don't know. Game is super well optimized and looks extremely good on base PS4. The Pro version is better, sure, but it's not astoundingly so.

Anyways, my idea is more that everyone that would've bought a Pro for Horizon has probably done so, already. Bundling it with the base PS4 will have a much, much larger reach, especially if Sony drops the base model to $199, and that will prep the franchise for DLC/sequel.

Battlefront 2 bundled with the Pro is all about using the movie/series hype to sell Pros. Doubly so if it's a special edition. Added apparent value to push the higher margin product.

even MS are aware it's not going to be the primary means of income from their xbox division. MS just don't seem to be able to catch a break. it's like scorpio needed to launch alongside some awesome new xbox games in a month/year when sony were offering very little (last year for instance). but it seems this year sony is just throwing games out one after the other with no letting up and MS's offerings seem to have dried up. i mean, it's one thing to release a new console with few games to play on it. but to release a new console with few games to play on and then ask $499 for the privilege (if it goes for a "premium" price tag) then it's going to be a a big ask, no matter what sort of marketing push it has.

i mean, by christmas we might be in a situation where sony are offering the slim for $199 in a year where they released a ton of games you can't actually find anywhere else. as well as a bunch of third party stuff that will be immediately associated with playstation due to their advertising deals. that's a hard thing to compete with, 6tf or not.

yup, this my line of thinking. It's a very nice box, and honestly, I really wish Pro came out this year with the same specs. But, this is year 4 for us launch owners, and man, game wise, PS just seems to be hitting it's stride. Unless MS is about to have the next "Gears of War" moment with such a huge graphical leap over anything I've seen, it's hard to care about power right now when the games are finally coming out. Just seems bad timing all around, and if they do market it as the next Xbox, what happens just a year and a half later when Sony teases PS5 for 2019 or early 2020? MS gonna ask customers to buy a console every 2 years now?

Interesting times ahead, and we really can't forget about the Switch.

MS made a big deal with Xbox S and it was outselling PS4 for 3 months after launch, Scorpio is likely going to have an even bigger marketing campaign.

Key difference there is One S had price parity with PS4 and some very appealing bundles (BF1, Gears 4, Forza Horizon 3) in a period where Sony wasn't launching too many games. Scorpio is going to be the most expensive console on the market competing against PS4 in its best year ever, a Switch that looks pretty strong right now and another cheaper Xbox that plays all of the same games.

Only in the us right?

Only in the US. Given Xbox 1 S sales and how they dropped off, the likely scenario is that it was largely OG Xbox 1 buyers purchasing the system and that initial rush quickly tapered off.

I think Scorpio will be the same. It's aimed squarely at the core, so 1-2 month of boosted sales before falling off. And even then, depends largely on when it launches. Even then, I'm expecting Scorpio to do what the Pro did but worse given the marketing push a lot of big games are recieving this year.

Ppl keep saying Japan studio won't announce anything this year when shu keeps saying they will

Do you have a link to where Shu said that? I really don't see Japan Studio being in the position to announce anything else this year. We've already had two releases from them in the last 5 months and they'll probably be releasing Knack 2 later this year.

It was some interview for 2017 at work can't find right now, Masaaki stated he was hoping to announce whatever is cooking this yr too. I don't expect any game releases but collabs and announcements are totally possible

Japan Studio producers

“While I can’t say any details yet, we’re also moving forward with the creation of ambitious new titles and new title concepts at the same time, so please continue to support Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Studio in 2017.”

“Since behind the scenes activities have been ongoing since Bloodborne, I hope this will be a year that bears the fruit of the things we’ve built upon so far.”

Japan Studio are also ex-dev partners, so not necessarily their games will be internal studio projects like TLG/GR2.

Right now, under Japan Studio, there are the following projects...

Internal:
- Knack 2
- No Heroes Allowed! DASH!
- Unannounced Keiichiro Toyama project ( just shipped GR2 )
- Other ( if any ) (assumption of available resources after shipping TLG )

External:
- V! No Heroes Allowed! R!
- New Everybody's Golf
- Other(s) (unannounced collabration/production w/external developer )

Meh i dont care any upcoming games anymore....

Al i want is...... WARHAWK! Not a new one ala Starhawk....just uprez warhawk ps3 version plz Sony :( and make it f2p with costumes and other silly cosmetics.

Man, that would be amazing!! Loved what they did with Sly 4, so many new elements, but at the same time kept the soul of the franchise intact.....but not sure in this day and age, they will get enuf budget to create something like this :( Loved Puppeteer too...but i guess thats not going to return anytime soon(if at all) either.

They have to right, or at some time? How can they give up on something so epic as Bloodborne?

I can't think of how they gonna improve the game tho without becoming bloodborne 1.5

I really want a sequel but also stay the Bloodborne as a single very special game.

Yeahhhhh, X1 S sales didn't taper off because MS 'forgot' about that piece of hardware. They are just most likely reaching the market cap their current demand & price levels are actually at for the region. Consider that a game like Gears 4, when in years past a Gears release would carry a hardware boost for 6-9 months, tapered off in the same time frame, and they had a Halo game launch in February and they still couldn't get up to normal sales levels.

The software strategy for the Scorpio is the same as for the X1 - it's the same platform in regards to software portfolio. Hardware power & a higher price tag are not going to move the needle at all with casual consumers if a) the 4 biggest 3rd party titles of Q4 all have marketing deals & bundles with your lower priced competitor & b) your software strategy for the next year is the same as it has continued to be up to this point. On top of that, MS is going into Scorpio with no major franchises from their marquee stable (with the exception of Forza) and instead are relying on lesser known series, even by their standards.

And your idea that NA/UK shape the market perception of a console isn't exactly true, as these consoles are marketed very different in other regions. Heck, MS & EA spend millions & millions of dollars every year trying to market Xbox as the FIFA console in all of EU, while the PS4 sku destroys the Xbox sku in terms of sales. If you don't think a GT Sport bundle launching in the EU this year (and probably region exclusive too at that) is not going to basically overtake that entire region including the UK for this holiday season, then you just don't know the market realities of foreign markets as well as you think you do.

Yakuza Kiwami and uncharted LL in August. I thought summer would be chill...my wallet

July looking like the only safe month...for now

No FFXII HD? You should be ashamed of your words and deeds.

The first quote is talking about Worldwide Studios as a whole, not just Japan Studio. The second sounds like it's talking about external projects. I don't think anyone's denying Sony will announce at least one or two games Japan Studio's helping produce, it's the internal projects that we think are at least a year off from announcing.

They have to right, or at some time? How can they give up on something so epic as Bloodborne?

The same way they gave up on Demon's Souls, by giving us something new and awesome instead.

I'm with you on a f2p warhawk on ps4 with plane skins and clothing as the way to make money the game is already skilled based and the rank system is good to go for players that what to make it to general in like 2-3 years.Makes me sad the sony hasn't done it. :(

so is it pretty much a lock that Spidey is going to be one of the games showcased in a big way during E3?

being a big fan, I want that game to be great so badly.
