Nintendo Direct on April 12 (3PM PT, Switch/3DS, mainly Splarms)

What at all was confusing about that? It's Left 4 Dead survival mode, basically. Co-Op, try to collect as many eggs as possible, etc.

Payday is huge.

What's confusing about Horde mode?

horde modes have been a thing in shooters for years and years. what's confusing about it?

I have never played Left 4 Dead survival mode so yeah when I was watching the new mode on Spla2n I was kinda confused of what to do there lol. I was expecting more info about single player campaign mode and stuff like that, y'know? :c

wow 3ds releases feel so off-putting now. I spent the whole 3ds portion of the direct wishing they'd become cross-gen. i would take the most bare-minimum port job possible just to be able to play on the more-comfortable hardware.

yeah the bizarre corporate propoganda video had me expecting campaign setup too. but it's just a pve co-op mode. I guess the thing about octolings at the end was the teaser for the eventual real campaign reveal

The 3DS has had some crazy legs but I'm definitely feeling it's in it's decline. After Fire Emblem, Pikmin, the two Monster Hunter games and maybe Ever Oasis I think I am pretty much ready to say goodbye. Time to let the Switch step in and take it's place as the lead handheld platform.

Its really weird that they are making Soooooooo much exclusive 3DS software

it really bothers me

I'm sorry, that was a craptacular Direct. I expected one or two smaller third party announcements. Show us you are getting something other than Indies. You could have talked about DQ, or funded any of these ports like Trails of Cold Steel, Portal 1 &2 (already on Nvidia Shield btw), Bayonetta 1 & 2, Madden, Pro Evo, Digimon, I mean common now.

WTF are they doing?

Uhhhh, did you not watch it? Payday 2 was right there for third party. So was Rayman. And Monopoly. We even got a new Nintendo IP.
I was underwhelmed but that's because I got my hopes up for VC news.

Fire Emblem is probably the only game shown in the Direct I'll get. But that only got a DLC announcement, and after Awakening I don't think I'm touching FE DLC again.

Still not convinced on either ARMS nor Splatoon. Everything else was good, presentation wise. Felt like both ARMS and Splatoon should have been flash announcement stuff as well.

Was it expected for them to address the Virtual Console?

Sorry if I'm out of my element but good goddddddd man, when the hell is it going to launch!?

I was very surprised to see this much content in the Direct.

Too bad most of the games didn't interest me at all. The only ones that did something for me were Namco Museum, Monopoly and the Bomberman Othello thing.

Still, surprisingly meaty Direct!

No, me neither. But Payday 2 for whatever reason was a huge part of the multiplayer zeitgeist for a while. This is a great game to test out the theory that people want to buy those old games again because of Switch mobility.

Yeah I was thinking more in terms of the retail space, but yeah PD2 doing well could see other mid level games coming to the switch in the form of late ports.

Lower budget indie games are pretty much a lock, it's just mid budget and AAA third party games that are the undecided factors here.

Depends on pricing though, they're going to be old ports because they're not going to risk putting in a lot of effort for a current game in an untested market, but people aren't going to want to pay full price for a game that's years old.

I'm fine with it for games like MK8, because very few people had Wii Us, but if it's a game that a lot of people have played already you can't charge full price for it.

If PD2 costs more than it does on steam (the non-sale price), then it deserves to fail.

I thought the direct was pretty entertaining. I did not go into it with set expectations, however. I do believe that one epic direct years ago (I believe it was a January one) has pushed people into expecting every direct to be some mini-E3 showing. I thought these were just Nintendo's way of communicating with their fans/ones interested (kind of like a pseudo game magazine...and those are a far cry from being mini-E3's). I believe they accomplished just that.

I suppose playing devils advocate, these reactions would be like myself being disappointed in pretty much every game informer that comes in the mail (when I did subscribe to them) because the content didn't interest me. Shouldn't mean it sucks, though, because the guy next door could have the complete opposite opinion of said material.

If you expected anything other than Splatoon and Arms then thats on you

Please Understand. Seriously though, didn't Nintendo once say that there would be Virtual Console news before launch of the system?

Pretty alright, given that they straight-up said that it was mainly gonna be about Splatoon 2 and Arms. Arms is eh, but Splatoon 2 horde mode looks cool. And I may pick up some more of those Neo Geo games. Pretty good given how close to E3 it is
Mark of the Wolves was my megaton
Was thinking the same

E3 is literally just around the corner and most of the things you are talking about would make more an impact there than they would here.

You are being very unrealistic.

About the format: I'm quite fond of the news scroll, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one who kept peeking ahead for seconds at a time to puzzle out the announcements cryptically concealed behind vague clues and question marks.

You know GAF hot takes are terrible when they show a match of ARMS with commentary that breaks down the nuances of combat in an entertaining way and most people are complaining about the presentation being aimed at 8 year olds.

Even Salmon Run had me excited as they explain their own twist to a horde mode and I'm over here getting excited about the gameplay while others was complaining about the presentation or complaining that they don't even know what you do.

Do people even play games anymore or are you just on GAF to bitch about everything?

They did announce new smaller third party stuff though that aren't Indies, like Fate/Extella and Nights of Azure 2 (jpn stream)

Nothing shown convinced or enticed me on a Switch purchase yet. Mario and Xenoblade 2 at E3 is the next attempt I suppose.

3DS still going, but its a wasteland outside of FE. Box Boy sequel is nice, but I had my fill with the first game. Shame the MH announcement was Stories. Bleh.

I suppose Amiibo fans have some hefty pre-orders to jump on though.

I would play games but Nintendo hardly ever releases any for their new platform.

seem good, arms look like a fun game to release some energy, and splatoon 2 look amazing (duh), was certainly not expecting an horde mode, but it look fun, however I hope there will be more than 1 map for horde or it might get stale pretty soon, that pikmin platformer also look very fun

A bit surprised that whe didn't had new on Yooka Laylee for switch, a release date would have been nice.

As I said earlier, I expect that this will be mostly the appetizer for the meal that would be the E3, I would wait for after the E3 to be dissapointed.

I respectfully disagree. Nintendo should and need to get some third party announcements or of the way that may not play well at E3. Rayman, Monopoly, are not what I call even medium sized third party titles. It was disappointing.

Video games...serious business. Honestly, I do not get it myself, but I know that I'm pumped to play those two games (the presentation kept me interested).

God damn reading through the thread when they were showing 3DS stuff was embarrassing. Come on guys it's ok for them to support a great system with more games, especially with a 70mill user base. I think my Switch and 3DS are both fine.

Miitopia was exciting to see announced for me. I love Tomodachi Life.

Didn't expect much and I didn't get much which is fine by me.

It's a bit disappointing that there was no VC news, but if you were actually expecting any major announcements for Fall/Winter titles when E3 is but two months away you were just plain wrong. Frankly, a lot of the time that's just the desire for "OMG MEGATON" hype moments overriding common sense. It harbors the thought process that if it ain't a new, big game for the "worthy" system (i.e. Switch), it might as well not exist and is somehow taking away from those elusive Megatons.

E3 is pretty much exactly 2 months away now, no marketing department in their right mind would announce major games coming out 2+ months after it in a lowly Direct. Wait until then and, if E3 is disappointing as well, you're free to join me in the Panic Room.

No way man, any 3rd parties working on switch games should have announced them at this direct instead of E3, don't they know that the switch is flopping because there are no third party games?!
