Not even the tiniest hint of waiting to see how it might work out for them, no it's instantly the worst thing that's ever happened to them in all of these very specific scenarios.

Be just like all the other times where people made a huge deal of things to find out their lives were not impacted for the worse. Not surprising at all.
 
Some people dont always want to pick up their phone to unlock it. It's more conveniant for some people to have the finger print scanner on the front. It is not rocket science.

Arguing about lazyness when discussing a method for unlocking your phone that saves you two seconds is kind of silly.

FYI, that comment is actually on our discussion, that people are different and some actually have a use for a fingerprint sensor on the front as I was trying to say.

That's all there is to say really. People's mileage will obviously vary with how much this change would matter to them, but we all know it will move back to where it's meant to be at some point.

And for me, I really don't like compromised designs.

We all have differing opinions on this. It's not a big deal, and definitely nothing to fight about.

At least we can all agree on one thing: Thank god Apple removed the headphone jack.
 
The other thing is this is the design Apple really needs to nail. The iPhone hasn't made waves since the 4. Always solid, never spectacular.

This design is the template for years to come. Throw in the 10th anniversary as well, and it will be a disappointment if we get a very shiny bodge-job instead.

I don't care if it's good, I want it to be great.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I feel like the Apple that regularly wowed people with hardware designs died with Jobs.

It's not about elimination, it's about change. How you use the phone is always going to evolve based on the design of the phone. And it's funny you mention options when I've been the one suggesting them for people who hate the potential change. Not my problem if these are no-gos for people.

The trend is for hardware buttons to not be on the front of phones at all. Like someone else said, if you aren't on board exactly what phone are you going to move to? The SE? That'll eventually get it too.

I don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon. You need at least one or two buttons as a fail safe for customers in regards to restoring or hard resetting their phone etc. Also blindly controlling volume or similar while the phone is in your pocket. Nah.

But that change brings the elimination of an option many people find appealing, including me. The option of being able to check your phone without picking it up. It's something a lot of people do.

Is it critical to a phone's success? Of course not. But it's still a thing people are going to argue they appreciate about having a button in front of the phone. How you can say those people are just lazy or misguided is beyond me.

I think the major problem people have with the idea of a rear fingerprint scanner/button on an iPhone is the idea that Apple was supposed to be introducing the scanner being embedded into the display this year. If they can't do it this year for whatever reason, odds are very good it'll be introduced next year--making this rear-button design a half assed stopgap design that only makes sense because they want to eliminate bezels now rather than waiting until their manufacturing capabilities catch up to their designs.

So in all likelihood, a button on the back isn't where design is going. At least not for iPhones. It would be a one year aberration before the buttonless future comes.

Not going to argue there, nothing to really point to otherwise. This is where they can prove they still have it, there isn't a more important product for them.

Although with the way the rumours are at the moment I'd be happier for this to be MIA at the event.

At least then it would show they want it to be right.

I don't think this would be a problem if 3D Touch were required. The less moving parts the better. I hope one day we get a full digital experience on these devices—mechanical buttons are less versatile than totally digital interfaces, and I don't see what hardware limitations could not be overcome with clever engineering. The concept is at least five years old. Technology has matured. I'm ready to see a modern take.

Accidental pocket inputs are already a nonissue. I mean, do you often accidentally dial emergency numbers with your iPhone right now?

See, this is reasonable discussion. This is good.

The laziness was a bit of trolling on my part, I thought it was obvious. I think once people were to use a back scanner for a length of time, say a month or so, it would really grow on them. Are there use cases where it is less convenient? Sure. I think for day to day usage the back is a better solution though. Would be an obvious use to continue the Apple logo on the back, and give case makers a reason to keep cutting a hole for it besides vanity.

Part of why they would stop gap for this year is that it's the tenth anniversary. They are expected to wow, and if they don't they will be roundly criticized. They'd rather be for that than extending what is becoming a rather sleepy design for the nth consecutive year. Plus, the pressure to match what Samsung has now done, and hot damn if that doesn't look like an appealing phone. My previous statement of swearing off TouchWiz included.

The delay the phone for 2018 and people will scorn them because everyone else is going bezel free. Might even allow Samsung to implement it into the S9.

Put it on the back and it's the worst thing ever and the media will scorn them.

Put it under the display this year and face shortages or even reading issues the media will scorn them.

They've done the shortage thing before again and again and it's pissed off people who want to own the phone day one but everybody else has been fine. And it's never pissed off that former crowd enough to turn them off iPhones, lol.

There was an article I read that said that when the 4S came out Corning was still on the first generation of Gorilla glass, and now they're on the 5th. So I think it would be far less of an issue

I agree with most of this, particularly about how appealing Samsung's latest offerings have been.

Apple definitely needs to come out of the gates strong in the hardware department this year, or risk losing some major mindshare--particularly if they trot out something that closely resembles the design they've used for the last three years running.
 
Regarding Samsung fingerprint sensor on the back, I think the reasoning is Samsung expect it will no longer be the main way for people to unlock their phones due to the face recognition. It will be mainly used for authorising payment.

The face stuff seems so quick and snappy that I can't see people not using that. Although if that relies on being tilted or moved vs a button press then I guess the desk argument still stands.

Such a weird expectation people have to be constantly wow'd or to see crazy new never before thought things. That isn't how design or technology works. We have reached a plateau, saturation, maturity stage. Iteration over huge changes.

You will have to wait for the next technology or jump to be actually wow'd.

My phone has the fingerprint sensor in the back.

I can unlock it from the front.

What wizardry is this? It's LG allowing a unique touch code to be entered, while the screen is off no less. I use the fingerprint sensor for PayPal and other ID sensitive apps as well as for unlocking if my phone is in hand.

Oh wait, we can't have simple compromise in this thread. My phone is useless because the fingerprint sensor is on the back, rawr.
 
Galaxy S8's fingerprint scanner position was completely overblown, it works flawlessly for me. I doubt Iphones variant will be much different.

I might've agreed with this if the Galaxy S8 wasn't a thing. Hell, even the S7 Edge was a stunning piece of hardware.

You don't need to be revolutionary to be gorgeous and wow people. Apple hardware hasn't been gorgeous in a new way for a while now, IMO.

It's sleek for sure, but just an iteration of what Samsung has been doing for what 2 years? It is a nice piece of tech, but isn't anything super crazy or revolutionary.

Of course not, but what we were talking about was beautiful hardware that wows people. New tech isn't really a part of that (obviously it can be, but isn't required).

Yep. The last Apple design that wowed me was the iPhone 4, but even that was because of the materials they used, not the overall look. Before that all we had were plastic phones.
 
From what i read the reason why Samsung put the fingerprint scanner on the back on the s8 is because they didn't have enough time to implement the scanner under the screen. The note 8 will probably have it underneath the screen.
 
Rear sensor is far superior for me. I take my phone out of my pocket far more often than using it on a flat surface.

Plus, the swipe down gesture on the rear sensor is perfect for pulling down the notification tray when using the phone one handed.

Yep. Mine hasn't arrived yet (THANKS SKY) however I have been messing around with one and I have to agree, I'm also left handed and there doesn't seem to be any issue with the fingerprint scanner position on the S8+.

This is why more areas of the phone body should be functional. I hope, if the curved screen rumors are true, there is some touch functionality baked into the sides of the display. Double tap for reachability, swipe down for notifications, etc. That's a small change, but it would make one handed use that much easier. Less repositioning of fingers. If they get rid of the home button, they got to put those functions somewhere anyway.
 
Galaxy S8 sensor placement is dumb. little bezel screen is gorgeous though.

I prefer the sensor on the front, but if it's placed sensibly on the back I could probably manage.

Rear is much faster when your hand is already holding the phone. Having to move your thumb to the bottom of the phone for a front sensor not only takes longer but also increases the chance of it slipping out of your hand (since you're only holding the phone at the bottom and not the middle).

And yes, I store my phone in my pocket, so taking it out of my pocket is a perfectly normal thing to do.
