here's hoping Vegeta reacts to 17 being SSB level

Vegeta: Kakarot, why did you bring this doll? he is a weakling who couldn't even stand up to Cell!!!

Goku: um actually he is on our level and I am not sure if he is stronger

Vegeta: *kkkkkkKKkk sounds forever*

*animation quality dips, voices sound like they were recorded in a train station restroom*

Android 17: actually demons who are stronger than buu regularly appear on that island and i have to fight them and that's how i got stronger

*jump cuts to the rest of the conversation, as if the last few moments didn't happen*

Actually, speaking of Dr. Slump. I feel like Gohan in high school hit a similar note wherein Gohan is a superpowered freak trying to fit into regular human society while having little context to what regular society is.

I think that's why I've had little interest in most of the between-arc stuff in Super. The ordinarily life heartwarming stuff seems at odds with a cast of unusual people who live unusual lives.

You literally just explained why it can be so good. There's a reason why people like the driving episode so much.

lol

Ah, the question that keep the DB fanbase going! hehehe :P

apparently Torishima egged Toriyama to add romance on his stories, and thus we got all the kids getting paired up with new characters in Dr Slump, and he seemingly wanted Goku and Bulma to get together

so I assume the whole Lunch / Tenshinhan thing must have come from Torishima too once Goku / Bulma was ignored

Uhh, didn't I basically cover that in the very next sentence?

On the other hand, that's why I loved the baseball episode, because it's this thing that becomes a silly event because of who is involved.

The only reason I didn't mention the driving episode is because I think it fits in with the baseball stuff.

EDIT: Unless I'm misreading what you mean. :S

Kind of lame to think that it took surpassing Beerus to even knock down Blamasu. I don't like that. Keep the power levels unknown like in Super, at least.

To be fair, it looked like he was absolutely dominating the fight until they split. Of course, it will make Trunks' power up look even more of a stretch.

Btw, I am in favor of having all characters more or less balanced and with an equal chance to shine, like in the latest arc, no no argument here.

maybe Toyotaro will come up with a decent explanation for the Genki Sword, or a different way of dealing with Merged Zamasu

Except it's not a plothole since the pages from the manga I showed above were made after the androids saga. And this line was specifically added to address why Trunks thought they were weaker and why Gohan never could beat them.

Also I'm not sure what the retcon changed. 17 and 18 were already one shotting them all. Cell just exacerbated the power scaling but I'm not sure what you think changed because of him ?
Future Gohan and his role fighting the Androids changed from fighting the big bad to the guys who jobbed to him. Of course power scaling would have gotten in the way eventually but it's not hard to figure out what he meant

Supreme Kai didn't know about SSJ2, or how strong everyone got / Gohan degressed. He's a chump, Gohan shouldn't have saved him from Buu, BoG would have never happened then.

You spend most of the post saying it's a bad thing. And then you just say thats why you liked one episode as an exception.

That's because I think most of those episodes haven't utilized that aspect, and as such, have been boring instead of funny. I do think think the baseball episode is an exception. I don't disagree with the fact that they can be good, like you said, but I don't think that "can be good" is the same as "are good".

No I mean th androids were originally the big bads of the cell saga, so they were probably initially planned to be as strong as Perfect Cell. Gohan trying and failing to beat enemies that would have been decimated by ascended saiyan his whole life is probably just a plothole caused by the retcon.
Im guessing anyway.

Whether he exacerbated power scale or not is irrelevant. Either the next level was way more unattainable at some point, or it wasn't good enough.

There's also 16 though. In a scenario without Cell, they could have made Trunks and Vegeta after the RoSaT surpass 17 and 18, but still fall behind 16. As things stand, 16 being stronger than them was basically irrelevant, since he only gets a brief battle with 1st form Cell where that had any role.

I always assumed that if Toriyama wasn't told to ditch 16, 17 and 18 that 16 would have ended up being the final fight of the arc.
I'll always wonder how the arc would have turned out if 16, 17 and 18 stayed the main villains, same goes for if 19 and 20 remained the villains.

I doubt it. 16 seemed poised to turn on them for most of that arc. Likely his role was always what it was.
17 and 18 were probably initially supposed to be stronger than 16.

Because holy crap that is awful. Pure trash.

17 is jobber for allowing Cell to absorb him.

Now that I think about it, he pretty much only jobbed in the main timeline.

You mean too good.

Super pretty much destroyed the closure we got for trunks after the cell games. It was cool to see him again, but just going back to his timeline destroying it was just like...what. And then trunks is like "ok whatever I'll go to another one". Lame ending to an arc with good potential, and for me really tarnished much of the "history" of trunks.

There were things setting up 16 being stronger from the moment he was introduced.

Also that he was a genuine good guy...
Besides, the 2nd set of androids were passed on because they didnt look intimidating enough. If the evil giant was the real big bad, that wouldnt have been as big a problem.
And finally, I dont believe it because I cant believe 16, being modeled on Gero's son, wasnt in the script when Gero was originally planned as big bad. And if 16 had been the secret final boss then, then that would just confirm he was replaced by 17 and 18 when the editor passed on that script
