Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 |OT| Anyone can save the galaxy once - SPOILERS!

Just watched the movie. Loved it.

I think it's better than GotG 1. It feels better in most ways and by god, did the movie look beautiful.

Really enjoyable. Probably my favorite branch of the MCU movies. By far the best MCU villain, felt like there was actually something to him and thats a first. Well besides Ultron, who had something to him - being a bad Ultron. And its not just because its Kurt Russel, who I love deeply. That helps though.

Might lean a bit too hard on references to stuff like Cheers and old 80s music but its counterbalanced with other actually good pop culture jokes like the Mary Poppins one.

Drax MVP though. He was hysterical in this.

Thinking back I think my favorites scenes are the 5 second of happy flashback Peter had before he unleashed his power
Especially the one he's flying with Rocket

I hope you all agree that my Bro Yondu and my Sis Nebula were the best part of this movie.

Yondu was. Nebula was alright, but I wouldn't say she was the best. I did like that her drama probably helped to minimize the dumb Peter and Gamora romance.

That CG work they did on Kurt Russell's face at the beginning was fucking crazy.

Just give us Big Trouble in Little China 2 if you can manage that

I really liked it, much better than the standard Marvel fare.
only bit that fell flat was the PacMan bit, and I was the only one in my theater that laughed at the Zune.

My theater had a huge laugh with the Pac-man bit.

A ton of jokes had huge laughs but I think the biggest one was the whole bit where Drax tricks Mantis into petting Rocket. As soon as he got that sly look on his face and told her to pet him, the theater erupted with laughter and it didn't stop until the scene was over.

[edit]

If you google Yondu the very first suggestion is "dies". Google don't fuck around with spoilers.

How did Nebula manage to track down Gammorah?

The ship the Ravagers gave her had Ego's planet programmed into it. It's a really quick line before she gives that speech about her childhood. I remember thinking "That's convenient." Haha. Didn't bother me though, logically it makes sense that they would have the location of Ego's planet since Yondu was delivering Ego's children there for years.

I mostly wanted Yondu to live so that Michael Rooker would get a nice fat paycheck for Volume 3. He and JK Simmons are really deserve a nice payout from the work they've done in comic book movies.

Nebula probably had the coordinates of Ego's planet, but it doesn't make sense that she was able to pinpoint exactly where Gammorah was on the planet's surface. It doesn't bother me that much, I'm just curious if there was an in-film explanation of how she did it.

Need to see it again before I can pass judgement. My one complaint is that they overdid it with the music. It seemed like there was constantly a song and not enough score.

Dave Bautista is the unsung hero of the GotG films. Drax is literally the best comic relief in the whole MCU, because he's not being stupid for Stupid's sake(see Darcy). He's learned excellent Comedic timing and I really hope that he gets used more.

The Zune joke killed me hard, considering I actually liked the Zune I owned. I'm really hoping Microsoft releases some limited time ones in conjunction with Volume 3.

Ego was probably the best villain in the MCU not named Fisk or Loki. When you consider everything that he it's no wonder that he did what he did. It would be like being the only man on an earth of insects, and while he is 100% wrong he's relatable. 100% an improvement over Ronan, who was such a shame of a villain.

Am I wrong to hope that come Phase 4 we'll get Annihilation Conquest to pay off the teases made by Gunn? Getting Stallone/The OGs/Guardians/Anyone else fighting a full on Galactic menace will be aces.

I was a big fan of the film. It was so much more of a personal story than the first. It felt great to really dig into a lot of these characters. Yondu was a highlight for sure.

I was pretty surprised to not even get a hint of them going to Earth in the post-credits stuff though.

Surpassed my expectations. And its atleast as good as 1, though it feels like a different kind of movie. Really really liked it.

I let out an audible YES when Fleetwood Mac kicked in on that fight towards the end. So fucking good.

Yeah, I've heard the song a million times, and never imagined the opening as a "getting ready to fuck shit up" kind of opening, but that's all changed now.

While the first film definitely felt like a James Gunn film through and through, Vol. 2 feels like it is Gunn unleashed and with no restrictions.

Hopefully this puts an end to the old "Marvel just makes their directors do whatever they say." This movie was Marvel telling Gunn he could do whatever the hell he wanted, as long as he mentioned Thanos a couple times.

Gammorah all

Russel was an ok villain but come on you're a god planet and that's your plan?

I guess I'm in the minority here, but Ego came off as another bland MCU villain to me. This time in the form of a god with a god complex. I didn't feel there was enough time spent with him to appreciate why he decided that all life essentially needed to be a version of himself. It was just delivered to us as exposition.

My favorite MCU villains are Loki, Fisk & Zemo. I felt like I could understand their perspective a little more than other MCU villains.

As for the rest of GOTG 2 - good movie, really enjoyed the end credits. I loved all of the little Marvel Galactic references. The plot was fairly zippy. The characters were tolerable and relatable other than a few parts here and there with Peter's moping around vis a vis Gamora.

This movie, guys. Holy crap.

I need to put my thoughts together when I'm not tired but this is another top tier MCU film.

Yeah that pacman scene...yeeesh. No one had the guts to say that's a bad idea?

Probably because it was hilarious. My theater was dying.

Ego was actually comically evil and it was telegraphed so hard it's comical. The Sovereign were robbed, but I guess they have next movie to job.

eh, I assume all spaceship have something like "scanning all life form feature", seems like a common trope in scifi. and the planet Ego is not that big, not even bigger than Earth's moon I think.

God these movies have something beautiful going. Something about these feel genuine and put a smile on a face whereas other comic book based stuff, it doesn't seem like it's heart is really in the right place. Best thing of the MCU, these two films

Just saw this at a screening tonight. Quick thoughts-

Thought it was not as good as the first as the beats are similar. Still a very strong showing. Did a great job balancing the good jokes with the bad jokes and it never felt like overkill in regards to the amount of gags.

Liked Kurt Russell but disliked the third act cgi monster that every movie has.

Drax was amazingly funny. Batista has some good timing.

Chris Pratt not as good. Maybe it's the overexposure of him but I'm tired of his face.

Nebula great,

Jondu with really great performance by Rooker. The real emotional core of this movie.

Groot is the shit. I've tried being like yo he's not that cute. But he's a cute fucking twig.

Agreed.

I went into this movie really blind, so as soon as he said the name Ego, I got a huge grin on my face.

I can't believe they went with Ego for the second movie and Quills origin. And the watchers? And Adam?

Fuck. Movie was filled with tons of awesome moments.

Also, the Gurren Lagann line. Amazing.

Yeah, thinking on it some more, I think Vol 2 is easily the better of the two. Getting over Yondu is gonna suck. He was the best. Stupid steaks.

What? Where?

Gunn said that three of the post-credits bits were for fun and two were MCU worldbuilding, so my bet is that Stallone and the OGs are
going to be the ones who find/steal the last Infinity Stone in the beginning of Infinity War, kicking off the whole thing.

Drax act as comic relief and the dumb muscle, but he is probably the wisest of the group. every other characters have issues they have to deal with, but not Drax.

Gonna copy paste my thoughts from another channel:

I gotta say almost none of the emotion hit me on this one. Most of the relationships felt forced and most of the big dramatic moments fell flat. Maybe it was the writing or the score, but all the character development felt so schlocky and melodramatic. It's all very much "tell, don't show" here. That said...I enjoyed the movie. I came in looking to laugh, see cool action, and ogle the design, and that's what I got.

The soundtrack was also a downgrade, as well as the effect it has on the story telling. In the first movie, the Walkman and tape are all he has of his mother, and the threat of losing it is the crux of his character. Here, he has two tapes that they've made digital copies that rocket and, somehow, yondu's ship play, which undercuts the moment ego destroys his tape in rage (sidenote: id like to read a medium post about guardians 2 being an analogy for the commodification of music.) Eventually he gets the Zune, which has no meaning other than now we get music that has no connection to his mother?

In the first movie, the moment he plays that second tape was such a high point, and nothing in this movie came even close to that. They tried so hard with Yondu's death, but I just didn't believe it. It felt like the movie ended 5 times, and that was BEFORE the credits scenes.

What? Where?

I don't recall the exact line but Drax tells Mantis not to believe in herself but believe in Drax since he believes in her. Then there's a joke after that where Drax is surprised she actually did it cus he didn't believe she'd be able to.

No way. Much sadder but this was such a non consequential movie.
Nonconsequential is the first movie. It ends in sound and fury but there's no emotion in the conflict. That's not to say that it wasn't fun as hell, but as far as character and impact go this is the stronger movie.
