Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 |OT| Anyone can save the galaxy once - SPOILERS!

Nope..

Better than that..

Really? I enjoyed it plenty, but the first tops it..imo, of course.

Bad for me, I should say. I do appreciate the work made towards fleshing out the characters more, but Rocket, Drax, and Peter were exaggerated much more in this one than the previous. Drax is just an asshole (a funny one), Rocket is an asshole to be an asshole (moreso than the first film without it ever being explained), and Peter is suddenly defined by the lack of a father. Following up Nebula's story with NotYondu cracking jokes was awful. Comedy is fine, but the comedy here absolutely dominated the film to the point where it felt more like a saturday morning cartoon than a Marvel movie. It just didn't land with me. Here I thought the film would be able the Sovereign chasing the team through the galaxy, but instead it's just another escalation of events where the entire universe is going to be consumed. "he may be your father, but he isn't your daddy". The first Guardians did a good job at subverting a lot of expectations including the ending, yet this one falls into yet another big budget CGI battle finale. Not to mention that Baby Groot got old in the first 3 minutes. There was just nothing that impressed me. I wish I could articulate it better though.

If Nebula is not involved with the downfall of Thanos, I'll be pissed.

Also, Jeff Goldblum was dancing during the end credits, so I was expecting a Thor teaser at the end.

Yeah, that is definitely the worst misuse of humour in the MCU, displacing the moment in Ant-Man where they ruin a great Hope/Hank scene by having Scott make a joke at the end of it.

Hey! When I say Nope to anyone, it ain't the be all end all or anything. Your opinion is plenty valid. I certainly didn't see it the same way, though I'd say about 15% less Groot would help. The jokes were definitely flying, and I can think of two or three that could have gotten a pass.

Personally, I enjoyed it tons..no way as good as the first. Nice flick if you're one of those that likes these movies being independent of the surrounding universe. My kid had a blast and she couldn't shut up the whole ride home. That kinda makes things a little bias as well, I guess 😁

I was thinking about this as well, the only characters with any connection to Thanos are going to get shortchanged when he actually shows up. That is pretty terrible.

Nah, it'll be worth it in Vol. 3 when the Guardians get back to space and run into Nebula in some space bar like
"Oh, um, we killed him. Us and like forty other guys. Sorry."
"You're kidding."
And Rocket goes "Why'd you tell her about the forty other guys? We coulda just said it was us!"

I'd like that soooooo much better.

Just got back. The characters and their interactions were great (Drax is definitely the standout). This did feel a lot more cliché than the first one though, and the soundtrack was weaker. Despite that, I think this movie was more enjoyable overall.

I'm there with you. I found the comedy overbearing. Timing is so important with comedy and this just keeps hammering away to the point of desperation. And this is just a pet peeve of mine, but I think I would've liked it a little more if they had scaled back the stakes. Instead of it being about saving the universe from Ego, maybe just reel it back to saving Peter from being consumed. If you're going to have it try to be this personal story, why not play that up even more?

I liked the angle with Yondu being Peter's "daddy." But having them separated for so much of the movie took some wind out of the sails. The Rocket and Yondu dynamic was working really well because they actually got a decent amount of screentime together.

And my eyes just glazed over during the final battle. The Pacman gag was good because of the setup, but aside from that I liked the opening and Nebula vs Gamora stuff more.

I quite enjoyed it, but still feel like it was a step down from the first one.
The young Kurt Russell was damn impressive work though. Best de-aging CGI I have seen yet.

And Yondu...what a badass.

And yeah, people were quiet in the theater during the eulogy, but you could hear the sniffling start once Cat Stevens began to play.

The first Guardians is my favorite Marvel movie and yet I have no desire to rush out and see this. Judging by reactions, my excitement level is right on.

Chatting with the wife on that right now. Holy shit..it's like a was a kid again watching this dude. Amazing work.

I'm kinda bummed that Groot won't be a baby during Infinity Wars.

Marvel's deaging tech is dark magic.

And waiting for the "looks like a TV show" stuff to roll in and roll my eyes. You could see every penny on screen in this film. Fuck, it had to be expensive.

Eh..that shit has to end. Funny for a bit, but I look forward to him being big and great again.

I like him as a baby way more since he's more expressive.

But maybe they will bring that over when he's an adult since he showed a good bit of emotion during the post credit scene.

Hoping the teenage Groot is only for that one scene. It was funny, but I wouldn't be able to take a whole movie of it.

MAN, MAN, MAN, what a movie. Best fun I had this year. Drax and Baby Groot stole the show for me. To James Gunn, great job. Also, I don't want Baby Groot to grow up :( but anyway what a movie.

While the first film definitely felt like a James Gunn film through and through, Vol. 2 feels like it is Gunn unleashed and with no restrictions.

Makes me really happy that he's going to finish off the trilogy. This man was born to make Guardians.

I LOVED this movie, one of the greatest comic book movies ever made. Everything a sequel should do. Take they characters you met in the first one and flesh them all out and expand the relationships. This movie effortlessly movies from hilarious, to emotional, to exciting better than most.

I assume most people will get turned off by the craziness of it all but that's what I loved most. It's the most comic book like movie marvel ever made, completely embraced the craziness of the comics in life action form.

Brilliant movie.

  • Yondu's death hit me hard.
  • I honestly didn't expect them to kill off Ego so soon.
  • The Star-Lord vs. Ego fight was pretty damn hype.
  • Everyone's character development was pretty great to see.
  • As fun as Baby Groot was, I'm glad that he'll probably be fully-grown by the time Infinity War rolls by. They're gonna need all the muscle they can get to go against Thanos.
  • Starhawk assembling the OG Guardians (who are still alive ;_;) was quite the fanboy moment for me.
  • ADAM WARLOCK INCOMING!!!!!
I didn't have very many expectations since I've avoided anything besides the official trailers, & I'm glad I did. I ended up loving the movie a lot, more so than Vol. 1. The real test will be with rewatches, which I'll gladly go for once my finals are over.

This pretty much solidified Drax as my favorite MCU character. The shot of him gleefully knifing the shit out of the inside of that monster in the beginning was so goddamn funny. Also didn't expect Yondu to die. Or the Adam Warlock teaser. That got me hype as fuck.

Adam Warlock Hype Train cometh

What can I say. That was a solid awesome action movie. I have no major complaints, it came together well.

I really liked Mantis, the actress did a good job, and her character interacts perfectly with Drax.

Marvel is a current master of special effects. It's so fun to just look at. And they are completely unafraid to go as weird and interesting as possible. It's appreciated in the usual status quo of Hollywood that Marvel can go so weird.

We got watchers, even eternity! We got see ego actually be a fucking planet. They don't hold back, they are giving us the craziness of the cosmic marvel universe. I love it.

Agreed. The biggest surprise to me is since when did Dave Bautista become so funny all of sudden? He was funny in the first movie and he's even better in the second. James Gunn is doing wonders with his character. I single-handedly thought Baby Groot was going to steal the show and then Drax just comes out of no where.

Also came back bit too long ago and this sums up how I feel quite well

I'm curious about a group at the end if the movie though. Had no clue who they were since I'm not a big comic person

That Yondu scene, "come a little bit closer" amazing. Man that movie is so beautiful to look at. Action was so much better than the first.

I didn't see Eternity in his full Eternity mode, unless that happened when I went to the bathroom.

Nah he mentions it while you sort of see the reflection of him in Peter's eyes

Agreed on that. And wasn't expecting a Superman style battle, but we got it near the end with Peter and Ego.

And yes, heard him reference eternity, but not Eternity. Once I heard the name drop, was waiting for a visual cue, but it never came except for the cosmos reflecting in Peter's eyes.

I can't wait to see the look on The Universal Church of Truth's The Sovereign's faces when Adam Warlock eventually joins the Guardians.

Drax jokes got a bit heavy handed at the start but the backed off on it as soon as it became noticeable. After that my only real complaint is that they didnt seem comfortable with serious scenes and had to pop in a joke. Also prat's acting was a bit awkward sometimes.

Still, great movie and the theater loved it. Yondu stole the show.

I hate how they doubled down on baby groot humor. Movie would have been so much better without some dumb ass one liners and less 25% shit humor.

Also, movie is quite brutal and i fucking love it.

I really enjoyed it tonight. I think I lean to this over the first movie since this let the characters breath more. The Drax/Mantis scenes were fantastic, what a great way to show his pain juxtaposed with his calm demeanor and to make him more than a source for jokes. Plus I love that this and GOTG 1 show more of the cosmic weirdness, such that you get a quick Duck scene in this and don't even bat an eye.

Also, nice to see Ben Browder in a role, not enough of him around these days.

The young Kurt Russell was damn impressive work though. Best de-aging CGI I have seen yet.

Yeah, that was super impressive de-aging they did with him. Marvel/Disney is getting really fucking good with that tech.
