Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 |OT| Anyone can save the galaxy once - SPOILERS!

In the comics as well?

EDIT: NVM thanks

The bolded is why Civil War might be the best in the MCU franchise to me. It feels like the popular thing is to say Cap 3 was basically an Avengers movie, but I never felt that way about it. It's a Captain America movie featuring a huge chunk of the in-universe characters. We don't call solo books with other characters and teams appearing in them "basically a *insert team* book", it feels disingenuous to do the same with Civil War, even if Tony was basically the co-star.

Still, I have complete confidence in Infinity War not being too big for its own good where the heroes are concerned. My worry is Thanos being a center of attention. He needs to be a main character like Loki was in Avengers, not just a means to get these heroes together.

Nah, the Russos pulled off Civil War. They'll do Infinity War right.

Here's to hoping. I'll try to believe.

Who's Starlord's actual father? And how did fans of the comic feel about MCU SL being half Celestial?

J'Son, king of Spartax. I'll admit I loved their take on Ego, but wasn't so excited about him being Peter's dad.

Was anyone else expecting an Avengers cameo when they switched over to those Earth scenes? Also, it was weird as shit seeing modern day Earth in a Guardians movie and it's gonna be even weirder seeing the Guardians on Earth for Infinity Wars.

I swore that seed thing Ego planted on Earth was gonna be what got the Guardians (especially Peter) to make their way there initially, honestly. Stupid idea in hindsight.

Need a "who's gonna tell him?" joke in Infinity War when Quill is showing off his Zune. Tony Stark better pass him a fucking iPod.

I think he means in the comics, in which case it's J'son, prince (and later emperor) of some empire whose name I have already forgotten.

Edit:
Emperor of the Spartoi Empire, with the main planet Spartax. Man, those names, jeez.

That was my second though when I read the post again :D

Yeah, his dad is/was the president of the galaxy.

This was so good. Every bit as good as the first, maybe better. And once again the soundtrack was perfect.
Seriously this. I went in with lowered expectations due to the reviews being a little down compared to the first but I may have liked it better, if not just as much.

Liked it a lot. Probably on par with the first one, which, while a breath of fresh air and a lot of fun, doesn't quite live up to its reputation as a mold-breaking masterpiece (I felt the same way about Deadpool and Logan, but all four are upper tier super hero movies). Vol. 2 doesn't carry that expectation/pretense, so I think I was more pleasantly surprised.

The way the film juggles its many characters is something of a master class; it does this much better than Avengers and Civil War -- and those films did it pretty well! It's just that in those cases, my overriding problem was: "yeah, if you're forced to include this many characters then this is a good way to handle things, but it still would have been better with less of them." That's not the case here: they all bring something to the table and even when characters kind of double on paper and could be redundant (Rocket and Yondu), he makes it work (and how, best scenes in the film).

Sure, some scenes drag and the overarching plot still doesn't gel in a completely satisfying way (and the universe felt a bit richer and more alive in the original; here we spend most of the movie on largely uninhabited worlds). But it has more heart, which is almost unexpected for a film this snarky. Good stuff.

I would say it's right on par with the original. So many memorable bits. Groot getting the wrong items over and over again, Mary Poppins, Groot puking, Chris Pratt and Kurt Russell tossing energy as if it were a baseball, antenna girl smiling as she calls herself disgusting, so many great jokes. If I didn't recognize Kurt Russell I may not have noticed the CGI at all in the beginning. It was that good.

Want to say so much, but rather than ramble, I'll just say the the reviews that were disappointed made me expect a movie that was worse than what we got. Not a perfect film by any means, and there is certainly some things that just not work as well as the first (the pacing, the way the music is brought in, the overall plot) but in general it's better in so many other ways. In that sense, it's definitely has the sorts of things that plague sequels and make people disappointed, but in general I think Gunn pulled it off better than I expected just due to the circumstances. It's hard to follow up a surprise hit with out trying to do too much. Focusing on a core story around the main characters and making a smaller film was the right call.

Reminds me of Kill Bill Vol. 2 compared to Kill Bill Vol. 1 in just how much it scales things down just to spend time with the characters, which can certainly make you feel disappointed if you expect something similar, but if you give the film a chance, it's very good in it's own right.

Forced jokes every 3 minutes –two out of ten being actually funny (Drax is insufferable)–, zero stakes/tension, meh story/villain and overuse of music, forced merchandising characters spotlight "HEY LOOK HOW CUTE THIS LITTLE GROOT IS, TOYS AVAILABLE NOW". About what I can expect from a Marvel movie.

6/10, "alright".

Better than the trash first movie though.

There were a few great tracks in this soundtrack, but vol 1 is easily better. In vol 1, every track was great and enhanced the scene. I hated how forced this movie felt with the music.. especially that scene where Rocket stops and asks someone to play some music.

I also hated how they kept teasing The Chain, and didn't even play the guitar solo section. It's gonna be interesting to see volume 3's soundtrack now they have 90's and 00's music to play with.

Glad someone else noticed it. How can you have that song and not have the instrumental breakdown? It would have elevated the soundtrack's usage that much more just by letting that song play out more than cutting it off after a few bars.

Thought this was kind of uneven, but still pretty fun.

A lot of the jokes fell flat, and some of them dragged on forever.

It was also missing much of the grimy space outlaw/pirate vibe of the first movie, despite hitting a lot of the same beats.

Yondu was great though.

And young Kurt Russell is probably the best de-aging I've seen. Although it is starting to seem a little funny that Disney is using that tech so much. In the last 2-3 years, we've had young Michael Douglas in Ant-Man, young RDJ in Civil War, young Kurt Russell in GotG Vol. 2, young Carrie Fisher in Rogue One, and young Johnny Depp in PotC: DMTNT. It's like they have a quota or something. But they keep getting better at it, so it doesn't bother me.
Don't forget Jeff Bridges in Tron: Legacy. Skinny Steve in CA: TFA also may have been the progenitor for how they de-age actors by using body doubles as well as the actor for an element of "practical" effects that makes the CG work. They also did CG aging on Peggy Carter in The Winter Soldier that is pretty convincing. If you didn't know what Haley Atwell looked like, you might believe she was really an old lady.

I thought it was great. Funny, heart warming, thoughtfull, emotional. The whole theater was laughing and cheering all the way through.

It's a beautiful looking movie overall, and Gunn has really developed the aesthetic into something that is now its own.

The plot is flimsy, sure, but I came in for the characters and they delivered. Despite the amount of money onscreen, it should be celebrated how the movie is always placing the characters personal challenges at the center of it all.

I admit, I had mild expectations. The reviews didn't sound so great, and they sold me on the idea that this was another "bigger doesnt mean better" movie. Even more damning were the hints and jabs about it all feeling corporate and typical Marvel. By the time it was over I couldn't come with an idea to what the hell they were all smoking, but I want none of it. I agree sometimes it had a joke too many though.

Cemented itself as the most interesting and fun big fantasy sci fi franchise around. Loved it.

I hope Quill didn't completely lose his celestial power. God damn it. They will so need it for the upcoming fight against Thanos.
From a narrative standpoint I like that Peter losing his Celestial powers also works as a renunciation of his connection to Ego.

From the IMDB page "Prop master Russell Bobbitt had difficulty finding the cassette decks used in the first film and all of the Sony Walkman headphones they found were broken. Bobbitt contacted Sony to see if they had any available for filming, which they did not, so he eventually created six from scratch."

So it seems they were rare already, so the film will only increase demand.

Was Nova Prime in this? I remember hearing Glen Close was returning in this film but she seemed to be completely cut. Also Nathan Fillion's cameo was cut since we saw the set photos of him playing Simon Williams in movie posters from a scene I don't know how it would fit but I guess Simon Williams was part of the GotG at one point in the comics?

I also expected Sharon Stone who had said she has a role with Marvel to be a Ravager/OG Guardian like Stallone, Ving Rhames, Michelle Yeoh, Michael Rosenbaum, and Miley Cyrus since her hints of her character was that she was a hero and had heat powers, leading many to speculate she was Nikki Gold. Makes me wonder if Simon Williams was also meant to be part of this Ravager team. Kind of a bummer that Yondu dies before rejoining the team, especially since they don't even get a final scene with him.

Simon Williams was never meant to be in the movie. Nathan and James are just good friends and they loved playing around on the set.

It was okay. As someone whose love for the first film diminished with subsequent viewings, this one didn't have the initial joy of it all. Baby Groot was in it way too much, but the crowd at my theater loved him so I know I'm the minority. I felt that Drax, Gamora, and Star Lord on Ego's planet had some weird pacing issues, plus I just found that story line a lot less fun than Rocket and Yondu together. The escape sequence was amazing though, loved when Yondu's arrow took out the lights and the scene was lit with the trail from the arrow, looked great.

Drax still feels kinda nerfed, most characters didn't do anything in the final battle, and while I did appreciate the Ego plot twist, it was lessened by the Sovereign showing up for whatever reason again. It's a 5/10 movie that I'm sure the movie going crowd will love cause it is by definition a crowd pleaser.

Bradley Cooper in this gives one of the better voice acting performances I've heard lately. Unlike Jungle Book where all the actors voices really jumped out of the animals, I don't really hear Bradley in Rocket. He did a good job of disappearing into the role. You'd think that would be easier to do with your face not ever on screen, but I guess it isn't.

Thought the 1st hour was really good, 2nd hour I was starting to really check out.

Too many characters, too many sub plots. I think a good 20 minutes could have been cut and it would have been a better movie.

The whole end battle was a drag. Didnt really understand what was going on, thought it was badly cut together and the pacing was very stop and start.

Was enjoyable overall. Would give it a 6/10.

Drax was great.

It was good. At least the villain is not weak but still typical MCU villain. Enjoyed more than recent Marvel movies

So far Civil War and Guardians are stand out for phase 2

Groot car window merch coming soon

Quoting myself from earlier in the thread.

She sticks with Ego initially because like his 'pet' she isn't exactly in a position to exert her own agency over a Celestial. She's also been raised by him alone since being orphaned in her larvae state so it's literally a case of innocently not really knowing any better until she comes into contact with the Guardians whereupon she has a new frame of reference to compare her situation with.

Ah not knowing much about her character I must have missed where it was stated she has been his pet since 'birth' so I guess it makes sense that she didn't know what he was doing was wrong until the G's turned up.

Do we have any idea what Thanos is doing right now? He picked up the Gauntlet a while ago and with only 2 movies left, and supposedly 4 years between GotG2 and Infinity War, he can't just be sitting around.

It's hard to walk when your legs are riddled with atrophy.

Sorry, I was slightly mistaken in my recollection regarding the exact exchange regarding pet thing conflating two similar exchanges together.
The first, Mantis is talking to Drax about how she came to be alongside Ego and says "Ego found me in my larvae state. Orphan on my homeworld. He raised me by hand and kept me as his own." and Drax remarks "So, you're a pet." which Mantis doesn't really refute.

The second, Gamora questions Mantis as to why there aren't any beings on Ego's planet and Mantis replies "A dog would not invite a flea to live on his back." to which Gamora responds "And you're not a flea?" and Mantis asserts "I'm a flea with a purpose."

But my original point still stands in that Mantis has a relatively low opinion of herself in relation to Ego and didn't know any better while under his care.

Had a few days to let this film sit with me and figure out how i feel about it.

I absolutely LOVE it.

Drax was awesome, Yondu had the best arc of the movie imho, I loved seeing Quinn go HAM on his father when he found out about the tumour.

The only disappointment for me was Rocket's. Felt like his being an asshole due to his past story was better done in the brief scene in the first movie. His interactions with Yondu were fantastic though.

And LOL at the Zune aha. I can't WAIT for Quinn to come to earth.

Also story wise I feel it'd be quite a bit more satisfying to see Gamora or her sister be the ones to defeat Thanos. However I feel it'll be Cap America using the reconstructed Hammer of Thor.

I don't understand why so many people have convinced themselves that this is a thing,

I liked it, but I can see why some don't.
Also it's such a shame there won't be a 4K release of this. It's a pretty film and deserves it. But, for whatever reason Disney/Marvel just won't make them. Booo!
