He is in a lot of scenes just to be there and be to cute. I think the criticpoint is valid to some degree

With a character as bad as Baby Groot, any amount of screen time above none is excessive.
This, which is ultimately fine I guess, he's adorable after all, but namely during the opening, I looked at my friend and said "This is still going on, huh..."
Basically that. It's just an opinion. I didn't particularly like Baby Groot so any extended scene with him felt excessive if you know what I mean. I don't mean to say he actually had a large amount of screentime, just more than he warranted. Although the bomb scene was pretty good.
It's not like it brought the movie down or anything.
Baby Groot is great. He's an adorable little pet, very expressive. What was wrong with his character?

I don't see it. Every larger Baby Groot appearance makes sense. He has no interaction with the Sovereign, he is never on the surface of Ego and hell, he basically disappears until the Ravager thing. Sure, he has pointed appearances here and there but duh, he's part of the team.

Baby Groot merch is going to fund James Gunn's retirement.
I thought the intro went on a little too long, but they wanted to use the whole of Mr Blue Sky (which is fairly long). Also the initial timing of the music with the logo is worth it (still not reaching the highs of "Come and Get Your Love" from the first.)

Movie is a lot of fun and had great pacing. Also has the best Stan Lee cameo.

Well yeah of course I do understand that if you don't like him every scene about him will suck, I just found his appearances were paced very well, compared to other funny kids in movies, atleast IMO.
But they're like 2 second scenes or him waving or puking. It's just reaction scenes like every other character has. After all, he's part of the team. It would be more stranger if he just doesn't appear other than his 2 scenes.
Yeah that's what I felt, they wanted to play almost all the whole track, instead of cutting it or do a shorter edit.

Because besides the Taserface joke the worst and most overlong scenes were anything that focused on Baby Groot.
Groot in GOTG1 was somehow more cute despite being 8ft tall and killing a bunch of people. How is any of the dumb shit that Baby Groot does any more adorable than stuff like Actual Groot's smile when he kills like 30 soldiers.
The cold open to Marvel logo + opening scene and title card is probably my favorite sequence of the entire MCU. It was already my favorite Marvel movie at that point and only got better. I was hoping for another cold open for this movie, but I loved what we got as well.
Love reading all the positive impressions, will probably go for a second watch this weekend.

The movie is on the verge of being almost just grown up enough to like unashamedly. Baby Groot fucks that up. LOL
Same. IIRC there were even the Tony Start Documentary thing poster things staring him. Maybe that Missouri present day scene had more to it originally?
I thought the gags in the middle went on for far too long. I def agree with that. But I loved the opening credits sequence and the scene with the bomb batteries

Btw, was their any point to having Vin Diesel voice Groot here? I forgot it was him till the end credits.
So he can go out and do press for the movie. That's his primary function.

So what is the argument for the first being better. I feel this movie has the better story, the better villain, better action, far better emotional moments, I think it's funnier, the ending is way better.
The first had better music and since it was the first it was more original. Maybe it flowed better, even then I think I rather watch 2 way more than 1.

He literally told him so long as he had the light, he'd be immortal. He's not without it. He's just a guy now. He's got Celestial in his genes, but without the light, it's basically just a useless mutation.
Baby Groot might be the most adorable thing I've ever seen. Anytime something bad was happening to him (especially when the ravagers were kicking him and pouring beer on him, I immediately went to "YOU STOP IT RIGHT NOW" and got sad
When Ego overpowers them all for a moment and starts engulfing Groot and he starts crying 😭
Only thing better about the first one is the song selection and it's usage.

Pretty much all of this. Don't get knocking a sequel for not "feeling as fresh". It's a sequel. So long as it doesn't feel tired and is good, who cares?
Yup. Nicely edited/framed too - you see giant kurt Russell and then just a couple of seconds of massive pacman instantly on the screen so it's sudden and unexpected (and a callback to earlier in the movie). Nice throwaway visual that really worked in my viewing.
That and 'my nipples...!' were the biggest laughs IMO
I liked the more adventure tone of the first, where the team goes to various planets. Also I felt like Peter team doesn't do much other than the first and final act, basically everyone at Ego is just there chilling while all the action goes to Rocket and Yondu.
On the other side I understand why it's like that considering the story.
At the end I do liked 1 more but I'm more than pleased with the sequel. Both movies are top MCU for me.

This movie felt way more fun than the last one. And I liked the last one a lot. The tone was perfect to me. Even with all those characters they felt like they all had their moments. I think I will try to see it again in the theaters.

The thing that blew me away the most is that in the middle of all this insanity, with characters faces turning into cartoons, turd and penis jokes; there could be a moment as emotional and simple as when Drax was talking about his family and mantis touched him and the emotion that hit her was brutal. I don't think there is a better emotional scene in all of marvel, except maybe the one that came at the end of the same movie.

Definitely more fun and funnier than the first, although overall maybe not the better movie. Regardless, I don't really care about Marvel and really enjoyed this.
For me personally:
-Better music
-Better pacing
-The humor wasn't as forced (same with the soundtrack)
This was just more of the same. Some of the highs were higher than the first, while some of the lows were pretty damn low. Pratt's take at dramatic acting was awful. The main plot was less interesting than some of the side stuff going on (Yandu/Rocket/Groot, Gema and Nebula, Drax and The Alien Lady). I really like Ego, probably top 3 Marvel villain, but it still felt somewhat undercooked. Right before he becomes the big planet monster thing and the low stake galaxy wide thing takes place.
I was really mixed because overall I did like the movie. But for a while, it felt like it was going no where. Then remembered it midway that it's a superhero movie and things suddenly pick up and get somewhere. Visually though, holy hell was this a pretty movie. MCU's most impressive display of visuals to date. I'm going to see it again tonight with friends. I saw it with my gf and her friend yesterday, and they absolutely loved it.

Gamora also gets hit with a bad case of Chickification in the first movie, where she's the only girl and the love interest so of course she has to act feminine and delicate so the white male hero can come to her aid and set the stage for them to bang.
The prison sequence is the worst example of that. You'd think that a killer with her reputation would have no problem going all Rorschach "I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me!" on all of the low level thugs, but instead she acts threatened and intimidated so Peter feels the need to step in.
She's a lot better presented in 2.

Yondu's death is the first time in a long time I actually remember being shocked or affected by a character death in fiction. I think Harry Potter was probably the last time, and none of that was as effective as Yondu telling Peter who his "Daddy" was as Peter desperately tries to stop him.
I need to see this film again this weekend I think. Usually a good sign. More I mull it over, more I think it surpasses the first in some pretty big ways.
