Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 |OT| Anyone can save the galaxy once - SPOILERS!

The beginning Groot dance number was a harmless, unique and damn funny title sequence. Nothing more. It kept a cliche battle in the background while giving us something both similar and more zany than the original's tone shift dance number.

Relax.

Nah, if anything cute is in the movie it must be eradicated

I maintain that there was WAY less Groot here than the last movie. I get that folks are locked thinking otherwise, but seriously. Intro, Fin, and bomb. Intro for sure was all about him. Fin? Not as long as folks are imagining. Bomb part was more Rocket and Quill than anything else..

Nah, if anything cute is in the movie it must be eradicated

Cute=Fun=RAGE

Is that worse?

No.

I think baby Groot was a little overdone (weird because I loved him in the first movie, and there was even more stuff with him in that one), but when it hit well it was REALLY good.
The beginning dance was only OK to me, mainly because I didn't think the animation on Groot was all that great (not bad, exactly, but just kinda off, like instead of him acting and feeling like a tiny object in the world, he just felt like a full sized mo-caped person dancing around), but it was pretty funny overall.
But him failing to get the horn for Yondu over and over was hilarious.

I also thought Drax was overdone too. His main joke of thinking that Mantis was ugly was a little too mean to be as funny as I'd have liked, even if the payoff at the end was cute. But again, as with Groot, when they did nail it with him, he was pretty hilarious (I hate that the trailer gave away him laughing at Starlord about his secret, that was one of the best moments).

I didn't think the music was as memorable as the first movie, which was probably my biggest disappointment. That was one of the biggest things I loved about the first GOTG and I own the full soundtrack (and I never care about soundtracks that much). I don't even remember the songs this movie had except for the river lily one and only because they directly talk about it.

Overall I definitely liked the movie. It had a lot more jokes misfire for me, but overall I laughed quite a bit. The movie felt a little too long too, but not too bad. And it was more emotional than I thought it would be, especially with Yondu.

Oh, and one small thing, I LOVED seeing Crichton from Farscape (and whoever he was in the last few seasons of Stargate SG1) as one of the Gold dudes.

The more I think about this movie, the more I end up liking it. It's crazy given that I found the first movie to be nothing more than "decent" (mid-tier among MCU movies IMO). My only lingering gripe about it is that some of the comic-relief moments were excessively long (Rocket and Taserface) or completely unnecessary (a couple of the Drax punchlines to serious scenes and Mantis randomly getting hit).

I gotta say, I love that Gunn didn't hold back with all the comic book-y stuff. This right here is something that was "made for the fans".

The Taserface gag pays off big when he finally calls the Sovereign at the end. That was hilarious.

Opinions. The Groot retrieval scene was the best part of the movie, easily. The tape scene was great too, but it was spoiled by the trailers. The opening was the only obnoxious Groot part imo.

Shit, Yondus ranger massacre was more obnoxious than Groot. The dark part of it was cool, but, in general, it went on for way too long.

I think the payoff could've still been there with 50-75% of the initial scene with Rocket being cut. I also found it to be one of the least funny scenes in the movie, making the length of it even worse.

Oh I had zero issues with Yondu's massacre as I'll never hear "Come a Little Bit Closer" the same way again. Was cracking up the entire time during that sequence.

I'm surprised the baby Groot dance scene bothered yall so much. It was totally in character with a baby being oblivious to it's surroundings. Now if say Rocket was dancing while in the middle of the fight, then I'd have issue.

Yondu's arc in this was great.

His final moments with Peter...

Plus, Ego was a great villain, especially compared to the flat and boring Ronan in the first film. The deranged monologuing at the end was pretty chilling when you realize just how fucked up he is.

Villain ranking:

1) Loki
2) Zemo
3) Ego

They're getting better!

Loved all the humor, and while the plot arc was pretty by-the-numbers, it was really well executed.

Upon reflection I've begun to appreciate just how far a deep dive Gunn takes audiences into this literal representation of the mind, forcing characters down the rabbit hole to overcome their own egos by embracing empathy while chastising its villains for failing to keep their own egos in check.

Just watched it yesterday, some general thoughts:

- Im glad they did not shy away from the concept of Ego the LIVING PLANET.
- The cliched father-issue plot was a hit or miss.
- The Quill and Ego dynamic in the beginning was boring.
- The revelation regarding what Ego did to Quill's mom illicited very strong emotions for me.
- Quill repeatedly questioning Ego, 'Why did you leave, mom?' reminds of D'Angelo questioning Stringer.
- The Quill and Yondu dynamic did nothing for me. It needed a flashback to a young Quill in his Ravager days in order for it to work.
- Those scenes between Yondu and Rocket got me. Stop fronting Rocket!
- The dynamic between Nebula and Gamora is an improvement from the previous movie but still very average.
- Drax and Baby Groot wasn't as overbearing as i feared but they also seem to be not as fleshed-out as the other members in the group.
- Yondu was fuckin' amazing in this movie.
- Mantis is just average.
- I enjoy watching those crazy trailer scenes within the context of the movie.
- You could never have enough 'The Chain' in the movie.
- Those Ravager cameos !!!
- I hollered when the Sovereign queen mentioned her latest machine to create the perfect being. Fuckin' Adam Warlock, baby! My date and the people around gave me weird looks.

Honestly I think Ego was the best so far.

It was great. Good subversion of a cliched action scene. Groot was adorable. They used him just the right amount for me. If they'd used him any less, the trailers would have spoiled all of his good bits.

Indeed, that's why it's so good.

Like, who really cares about them fighting some generic monster? Baby Groot dancing while not giving a fuck about the thing we also don't give a fuck about is super funny.

Yeah, its called toying with expectations. I had loved to see that fight, I wont lie, but having suddenly Groot dancing around was a funny surprise.
Everyone could shown that fight. What the beginning made standing out that we havent seen it.

I still enjoyed the movie even though it was pretty much like Age of Ultron story wise (kinda filler ish with no consequences to the overall MCU)

Although I do wonder if the Avengers are going to investigate what happened in Missouri

They did show a flashback of Yondu teaching a young Quill learning to shoot before he died although if you blinked you would have missed it

I love how Avengers 2 starts with this huge fully shown action sequence because people liked the one shot Fromm Avengers... and GOTG 2 starts with a dance sequence to troll people who whined about dancing saving the universe in GOTG.

For fuck sake, this was not filler.

Also it was set in 2014. And Avengers couldn't even be bothered to help fugitive Steve or Thor vs the elf.

I really enjoyed that opening dance scene with groot but i still think the scene you're referring to in the original is awful.

It pushes the story of the Guardians of the Galaxy forward and had consequences for them.

It is not "filler ish."

Not every single MCU movie has to impact the entire MCU.

Why is it awful?

Because people keep saying it's awful, but can't articulate why.

They just dont understand the scene. Its about distracting Ronin, to give Rocket a few moments to build his gun together. So what does Peter do? Something stupid that distracts Ronin.

Peter even spells it out :D

I also needed quiet some time to get it, tbh.

There's also something amazing about a grimdark stoic accuser having no frame of reference for a dudebro dancing at him.

'WHAT. ARE. YOU. DOING!?'

THIS, and while people complain about Ronan not being a compelling villain, the fact that he's such a typical arch-villain with zero subtlety or nuance is there to really sell that moment Peter goes goofball on him, that's what made that moment work for me. If Ronan was less arch and more nuanced, that moment wouldn't have worked at all.

Ronan is one of my favourite MCU villains. Pace nails the scene where he punks out that lil bitch Thanos.

I think all the comedic scenes with Nebula are hilarious because her design and personality are so severe.

She's in a perpetual state of burning a hole through the galaxy with those eyes. I loved the ravager guy patting her on the shoulder.

Going to see this today. Is the 3D version any good? Normally I'd just do it since I enjoy 3D but the showtimes are kind of odd for me. If it's good, I'll plan towards it. Otherwise I'll just go regular.
