Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 |OT| Anyone can save the galaxy once - SPOILERS!

Part one surprised the hell out of me and became an instant favorite. I didn't think this one would live up to it but it was amazing in every way. I can't believe they did it.

Saw this earlier today. Loved it. And wow, what a brilliant way to explain Stan Lee making a cameo in every Marvel movie.

Also, holy shit at the special effects making Kurt Russell look young. Incredible.

Just came back from seeing it. Really cool movie. Only thing that threw me off was young Kurt Russell. Seeing Kurt Russell in 80's movies made it seem a bit weird.

Really? it looked awesome to me!

Excited to see this movie again in a few hours with my comic book buddies!

Yeah it was really cool to see Kurt Russell at his peak again circa Escape From New York. Kurt's been saying it was mostly him shaving and his makeup guy that did the work and ILM did a few CG touch-ups and that was it, which is totally what they should have done with other "de-aging" characters in the past, because this didn't have an uncanny valley effect at all for me.

CG Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy looks so bad now comparatively, even Michael Douglas in Ant Man and Robert Downey Jr. in Civil War look worse in hindsight.

When she was starting to have her breakdown and she was sitting there leaning forward and her hair was hanging down I discovered a new fetish. Gold paint and all.

I laughed harder than I should have at Tazerface.

"IT'S METAPHORICAL!!!!"

Gamora was floating in space too.

A friend of mine said, "cause she is an alien." and I said, "and Yondu isn't?"

Gamora had modifications done to her like Nebula. It's questioned in guardians vol.1

She was going to die until peter put his helmet on her. Rocket said she would only last a few minutes with her body modifications.

I'm starting to come around on the 2nd one being better than the 1st now too

Also goddamnit how come Quill lasted way longer out in space than Yondu did

This is some bullshit

Bring him back q.q

Dude
Issue 1. Peter Quill? Peter CHILL more like.

Also I had to leave right after yondu's henchman practiced his arrows badly. What else happened?

Oh god so much

Peter walks in on teenage Groot playing games in his room having not cleaned up at all and having no interest in doing so. Peter remarks he knows how Yondu felt now

Sovereign chick, badly disheveled, is revealed to be watching over a new type of birthing chamber, awaiting "Adam"'s birth

Some aliens leave Stan Lee stranded on that rock

More that I can't fully articulate at midnight, but the internet likely has "post credit scenes explained" articles

That was incredibly..... MEH.

Pros:
+ Extremely pretty visuals.
+ Rocket Raccoon had a good arc.
+ Starlord is more grounded and less of a doofus.
+ Gamora and Nebula have nice if super brief moments.
+ Drax and Mantis have an effortless humorous rapport.

Cons:
- The script thinking it's part comedy and not knowing when to let a joke stop. Taserface, duct tape, Baby Groot dancing for 2 minutes, etc.
- Very unmemorable action set pieces which is extremely weird for a Marvel movie now. Especially the climax where almost everyone besides Starlord is seemingly standing and wandering around a green screen waiting to react to something.
- Feels like a lot of scenes involving Yondu and Nebula were cut for time especially when they reach their pivotal moments with Starlord and Gamora, respectively.
- Kraglin, who's played by Sean Gunn--Rocket's MoCap actor along with being James Gunn's brother--is just weird nepotism for an original character that becomes major throughout the movie.

Adam is Warlock and the aliems who stranded Stan are Watchers

Quill was half celestial at the time

I'm also waiting on a gif of Nebula fixing all her joints when after her ship explodes when she chases after Gamora with it.

Very cool scene.

I watched this earlier tonight (or technically last night when I'm posting this) but I've sort've collected my thoughts on it after a few hours.

To begin, I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was definitely fun and entertaining and worth seeing.

That said, I have some definite gripes. First off, I thought that the movie felt small. Besides the intro, the movie really just takes place on Ego, with the side action happening in a couple of other small locations. I was really hoping to see more of the Marvel cosmic universe than what we got. I think this is one of the main reasons why I felt like this film was more like a side-story than anything else. Like knowing that this is an ongoing franchise and that this also ties into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe...I don't feel like much happened that was really important? Luckily it's an entertaining movie because I could see myself explaining to friends a couple things that happen in this movie and then telling them to skip to Guardians 3 if it hadn't been.

Also, the story was pretty eh. Like, that 'twist' you could see coming from a mile of way, that kind of plot is playeeeeeed out. I didn't really like Star-lord being part Celestial...it felt like they were trying too hard to make the main character unnecessarily special, like they always do in other stories and mediums as well. He wasn't quite 'the chosen one' but I think I would've preferred it if his father was more of a regular alien than something close to a god.

Besides all that, the movie felt largely like more of the same, and as fun as it is, it's also disappointing. Like I said, I was hoping to see more of the Marvel cosmic universe, and for them to do some new things, but ultimately this felt like Guardians of the Galaxy Gaiden to me. I'd still recommend it to my friends to see in theatres though.

Do the Watchers showing up mean Marvel has the film rights back to the Fantasic Four, or at the very least the rights back to some of the cosmic elements introduced in FF comics?

No. They can use the race Watcher but not with the FF associated Watcher like Uatu.
Same with the Skrull - The race is ok, the FF-Super-Skrull not.

I had thought the male admiral of the Sovereign sounded familiar.

By Gawd, Ben Browder made it into a marvel movie.
IKR!?

I've been kinda in love with Elizabeth Debicki since The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Incidentally, I'm in love with Pom Klementieff because of this movie. She's effing adorable in her interviews.
WHoa! I didn't notice!

My Seattle audience literally applauded.
Xbox exclusive GOTG game, when? :p

Shit was wild..
I was wondering if they were going to do the whole "dude is really a planet"...and they did!

And shit, where you all at, GAFers with Star Lord avatars: WE ARE HERE AGAIN!

Yeah I'm fully on board the 2 > 1 train now. Great sequel. Great series.

Yup. The things I'll give the first is that it has a slightly snappier pace, and the music choices are arguably a little stronger/more fun. Arguably.

However, the villain alone makes Vol. 2 a much stronger film for me. Ego shits on Ronan from a great height. Plus, there's so much wonderful, wonderful character work in the sequel. It's a deeper, more character-driven film.

Exactly how I felt.

This was the direct opposite of Avengers 2. This was really the original GotG just more. More rocket, more drax, more quill / gamora embarrassing moments, more 80s, more goofy moments, more sarcasm, more trolling (Drax/Mantis was probably the best stuff). I expected MCU stuff but the movie made me forgot about those and it was a great stand alone experience.

See, what threw me was beardless Kurt. Flawless effect, but early 80s Kurt without a beard or stubble looked weird to me.

I love both but I'd probably give the edge to the first movie. Second movie had more jokes that missed or at the wrong moment.

I guess that's maybe fair, but I'd argue that the big hits hit harder than anything in the first film. "I'm Mary Poppins Y'all" was, for me, the funniest line in any MCU film. I also was dying through the opening credits.

How many times has GAMEPROFF explained the Fantastic Four rights?

We should just have a forum bot set to auto post that info when someone puts "Fantastic Four" and "MCU" together in one post lol

I know some people are complaining about it but I like how character driven it was. We really got to do a deep dive on these characters that you couldn't do in the first one and really get a sense for what drives them.

The scene where Mantis touches Drax while he is thinking about his kid is amazing. Drax sitting there with no outward show of emotion while Mantis emotes for him. It was really powerful.
