The Surge vs Dark Souls: A Detailed Comparison of Structure, Setting & Mechanics

From wouldn't make a game with this bland art/level design.
Thats like asking if CDProjekt made Dragon Age, lol.
Its my only complaints besides the number of bosses.

Anyway, hope theres a demo as thats what really sold me on Nioh.

Actually from the couple of streams I watched the level design looks pretty inspired. There is some pretty clever and extensive looping back on the original medbay and tons of short cuts to unlock. If you mean the art style and location then that's more up to opinion but the actual level design looks suitable mazelike and complex.

That part is mostly alright. The problem is the atmosphere and calling it scifi without actual science fiction. The environment, lightning, textures etc are bland. The character design seems alright, considering the setting.

Dude's are wearing exoskeleton power suits while fighting robots. Let's not get pedantic on what is and isn't scifi.

It might be aesthetically sci-fi, but one could argue and some do that it doesn't make a thing sci-fi. My work buddies for an instance don't count either star wars or Wh40k as sci-fi because of the rampant fantasy elements, which i think is fair.

The Surge is still very obviously science fiction. I'd even argue that both WH 40K and Star Wars are still very much science fiction even if they're not hard scifi by any means.

I havent seen footage showing larger areas like that yet. If theres an equivalent to Boletaria Palace here, I'd be impressed. And yeah, I find it very lacking in the atmosphere department. It was the same with Nioh, which is worth bringing up if we're trying to suggest this looks like it could have been made by From...

Yeah let's not get pedantic, let's call mount & blade scifi too.
If it is accomplishable with todays techonology, it isn't scifi.

Because massive mechanical killbots are such commonplace these days right? I passed a dozen on my way to work on Friday.

People are just finding anything to criticize the game for. It looks great and that seems so hard for people to swallow. If certain posters honestly hated the game, why would they return to the thread to tell others who are excited for it that a game they haven't played is shit? Spend your time elsewhere, conversing about games that do interest you.

I've watched Cohh's streams the last two days for about 6 hours. I went from I'll probably get it to buying it. It genuinely looks fun. Sucks to have so many people being shitty about the game.

Cohh really seemed to like it also. Atleast thats what he said many times in the stream.

Everyone playing this game say its good, people in gaf who never play it say its bad, you just cant change a mindset.

Watched the video and I'm still not sold. I wasn't really buying his POV that Souls is basically a boss run with pointless trash mobs in between because that's totally down to how you play it. I certainly don't play it that way, which should've been good news that this game is all about exploration and regular mobs, but the asthetic is a huge turn off for me.

The clunky, slow and considered movement seems at odds with the futuristic sci-fi design for some reason and it's got a very generic military robots look to it. Souls is fantasy medieval but it certainly is not run of the mill to me, it has humour, panache and pathos. I got none of that from this - all I got was a Soul-less (pun intended) copy-cat in Western asthetic clothes. Much like Lords of the Fallen in fact.

I don't get how people are saying the motion is slow. The dodge in this game is really fast and long, and with most weapons attacks seem quite fast. Way faster than any souls game except maybe bloodborne.

It's definitely growing on me as well. The more I see of this game the more I like its more understated sci-fi horror aesthetic derived from the clash between the sterile environments and robot enemies, and the elements of body horror integrated in its gameplay mechanics. It almost reminds me of System Shock in that regard.

Yeah, the industrial design grows on you, it's a very cohesive world they've crafted too, nothing feels or looks out of place

I guess Gravity wasn't a Sci find film then, same for The Martian.

You can argue that while it's using tech that's seen today, the Martian has ships we don't have today and as such it's sci fi. But if you make that argument then might I point it out to you that we don't have exo suits like you see in this game nor do we have lasers and shit that work like that.

I will certainly pick this game up later in the year a sci fi souls game sounds interesting they yave my attention. Just because they made Lords of the Fallen i am not gonna dismiss them seems silly imo.

The swings and general movement animation (except the dodges) just look really slow to me. Basically the same as Lords of the Fallen from what I saw that.
