Republican Candidate in Montana Special Election Attacks Reporter

So what? Are they feeding the surrogates lines to say so Lemon can act tough? CNN sets the table. Whether these guys come to diner and say stupid shit is in them

I just long ago lost the stomach for cheerleading this lowest common denominator Bumfights style of manipulatively packaged point-scoring 'discourse,' and don't wish to credit Lemon with anything other than slam dunking on a plant. It wasn't that long ago that he was this dude

I think if Montana Dems want to get the word out and convince Trump supporting Republicans, they shouldn't emphasize the politician attacking a reporter and that violence is wrong, it's that this guy is unstable and would rather attack a reporter than provide an opinion on the healthcare CBO score.

Even Trump supporters have to question a candidate when they choose donors over their constituents and support a bill that may take away their insurance.

There's no time to get any messaging out about this.

Parts of CNN are certainly news, but most of what it (and all cable news) does is punditry. It's talking about the news in an entertaining way. CNN has its team of Trump surrogates on because they create entertaining moments. CNN loves it when clips of Trump surrogates saying dumb shit go viral on Twitter. They will keep doing whatever they can to generate those moments.

As much as I hate this shit on CNN, and despite people being payed to come on and say this shit, they're spouting real talking points and narratives generated by millions of Americans. Even if some legitimately don't believe it, they still represent a huge chunk of Americans who do. As dumb as the conversation might be, they're real conversations spoken every single day by real voters.

Not saying having those people come on and get paid is the best way to converse about the news.. but it's sadly real.. and those talking points don't just go away because they're not on CNN. I find the whole situation pretty fucked up. They get paid to say the most blatantly, factually incorrect shit imaginable, and that's pretty disgusting, but they're saying shit that Trump voters, supporters, and republicans in general truly believe. I enjoy seeing them get roasted/put in their place from time to time because of who/what they represent.

There's a lot wrong with CNN and there should be a LOT changed about some aspects of their news programs, but I'd say the majority of the time there are some pretty well spoken, informative people who have airtime. I watch it a lot and learn new things every single day from professionals in particular fields on a wide range of subject matter.

There's a lot they get right as well.. and I think that's often overlooked because of particular soundbytes and video clips that dominate social media.

Come on y'all, he did what all of us have fantasized about doing to someone from the lamestream media at one point or another.

Unfortunately, he's stupid of enough to actually do it, which he didn't learn as a child.

I really hope you're joking

The sheriff said it's not unusual for them to not arrest someone for assault. Why do I get the feeling if I choke slammed someone in a waffle house in Montana my ass would be sitting in a jail cell that night?
Depends on State law, but in many states, cops have to witness a misdemeanor crime to arrest. Sometimes a witness or victim can file a citizens arrest, but that too depends on State law.

The 10:00 local news is on right now in the Billings area. This is the top story on both newscasts. One news station played the tape at the point of the bodyslam for about 10 seconds or so, and the other played the whole tape.

There is no doubt that this will be on the news tomorrow as well.

Don't get me wrong, I realize the intention is clear. Just becaus I give you some rope doesn't mean you gotta hang yourself though.

I'd like to believe this would have an impact but this country keeps proving me wrong.

Has Quist said anything about this yet? I can't find anything.

Only an on-camera quote of him stating that it is up to law enforcement to handle. That was right after the incident occurred, not sure if anything further in the hours since.

There's no time and honestly I don't think this matters to those voters. The CBO report is more important and likely moves more minds but there just isn't enough time for that either. Bodyslamming a ("lying liberal") reporter doesn't strike me as a deathblow to a campaign in Montana lol.

Talking point come from these idiots, then "millions of Americans" start repeating them, and then these idiots then say it's what millions of Americans are saying.

They aren't a crosssection of America as much as they are influencers, shaping discourse.

MELTDOWN IN MONTANA
Fox News team witnesses GOP House candidate slam, punch reporter

Fox news headline is surprising but i suppose it would be bad optics if they were the only other reporters in the room and they didn't report on it. lol

These are the apparent laws on the books in Montana regarding assault

http://leg.mt.gov/bills/mca/title_0450/chapter_0050/part_0020/sections_index.html

The relevant ones appear to be 45-5-201 Assault, and 45-5-202 Aggravated Assault.

45-5-201. Assault. (1) A person commits the offense of assault if the person:
(a) purposely or knowingly causes bodily injury to another;
(b) negligently causes bodily injury to another with a weapon;
(c) purposely or knowingly makes physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with any individual; or
(d) purposely or knowingly causes reasonable apprehension of bodily injury in another.
(2) A person convicted of assault shall be fined not to exceed $500 or be imprisoned in the county jail for any term not to exceed 6 months, or both.

45-5-202. Aggravated assault. (1) A person commits the offense of aggravated assault if the person purposely or knowingly causes serious bodily injury to another or purposely or knowingly, with the use of physical force or contact, causes reasonable apprehension of serious bodily injury or death in another.
(2) A person convicted of aggravated assault shall be imprisoned in the state prison for a term not to exceed 20 years and may be fined not more than $50,000, except as provided in 46-18-219 and 46-18-222.

I think the lesser charge is probably appropriate, all things considered.

I wouldn't say a maximum of six months of jail is not getting away with it.I don't think he will go to jail but he will probably have to deal with a civil suit over this. He should be knee deep in legal fees if he gets sued for what he did today.

He'll never see the inside of a cell, and he probably won't even see a fine. Couple months probation, a few hours of community service, and a seat in Congress.

Well their views are being pretty meticulously picked apart nightly. It's not like CNN has them on to shed light on their perspective. It's to tear it down. Again I'm not saying the way they do it is right, but they're not promoting their viewpoints. Those perspectives existed widely long before the talking heads appeared on CNN. And when they do appear, they look like fools.
