Wonder Woman (DCCU) Review Thread (RT 93%)

I saw the press preview yesterday and 96% on Rt is absurd.
The movie is just average, with a kitsch and stupid ending, a weak villain and very bad special effects.
I think the positive reviews, as happened with Ghostbusters last year, are more dependent on "gender" (female movie star + female director) than by its actual quality.

Fam, don't do this.

Oh no.

The thread was going so well, without any unintelligent sexist nonsense, I'm going to believe that your post was meant to be a parody.

Its the truth. Where do you live again?

This discussion has been done to death, but it's not true. I mean, hell, think about the logic, even if the character was totally unknown, she had a key role in BvS, a movie that grossed over 800 million worldwide, so by pure osmosis, she's known for that. I mean, the character was 'known' worldwide before that, but being known =/= knowing full origin, supporting cast, powers, etc.

Yikes...

Man can't wait to see it this weekend.

No, cause most of the Italian moviesites reviews claim that the movie is enjoyable but absolutely not a masterpiece. RT does not aggregate my country reviews but only Americans or in english/spanish language.

Nobody is saying its a masterpiece. I mean...

Guess we can't really have a Wonder Woman thread without the whole, 'Totally unknown character outside US' nonsense lol. It's the circle of life, I suppose.

people don't understand it literally makes no difference

nobody knew who the FUCK Iron Man was in 2008

96% is better than Dark Knight, LOL.
You'll see.

Do you know what the RT score represents?

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of RottenTomatoes

It has far less reviews than The Dark Knight as of now. It will likely fall below it.

And not a single review has called it a masterpiece. That isn't how RottenTomatoes works. It is simply a percentage of people who liked it.

Also, the fact that you think the reason other people have a different opinion than you is due to the director and star being women, makes you a sexist ass.

Just throwing that out there.

Nope. But we wont ever agree on this anyway.
Still, you are wrong.

No one is saying this movie is a masterpiece, far as I can see. Also, Rottentomato percentages are not an average score (though they have that elsewhere) it's merely a percentage of the critics that liked the movie versus those that didn't. The degree to which they liked something isn't reflected in the percentage. 96% doesn't mean the majority of these critics liked it more than TDK, but that a slightly higher amount of critics liked it at all, than TDK.

but the critics listed on rt aren't necessarily saying it's a masterpiece either. the 96% rating is based on the percentage of critics that like the film, not an aggregate of their scores. the average rating is currently sitting at 7.9/10.

oops, beaten to the punch by a bunch of other posters 😅

Not to add to the dogpile but it should also be pointed out that this isn't Wonder Woman's final score - it still has a lot of reviews to go.

Edit:

Your attempt to dismiss these reviews as being barely positive isn't actually based in fact.

I wasn't trying to piss on anyone's parade, just pointing out how Empire normally marks generously - to the point that I use it as a rule of thumb - and many of the reviews are couched in "not perfect, has flaws, but..." territory.

No, I'm not, and the fact that you can't even defend your point about this outside 'you are wrong' and 'I disagree' says a lot about that. I mean, hell, do you think everyone just closed their eyes when the WW was on screen in BvS lol?

The problem here is what praise Ghostbusters got was still fairly faint and more along the lines of 'it's not as bad as it could have been'. I enjoyed it for what it was, but it wasn't a good movie. It also wasn't a bad one. It was average and forgettable.

As for the rest of your complaints, sounds like you watched a comic movie to me bruh.

I'm calling it: $1B.

I'm predicting a Hunger Games sized performance ($400m or thereabouts) in North America for Wonder Woman and even I think a billion WW is ambitious.

If true this just means that the DCU will now get the critical kid gloves that are usually reserved for Marvel and Star Wars films. The soft pass that the likes of Rogue One got in film reviews did no one any favours.

I'm blaming that entirely on the direction given in BvS.

The Star Wars prequels showed that even amazing, Oscar-winning actors, when given crummy dialogue and direction, can't do much with it. WW in BvS really doesn't have much to do other than be a very forced cameo and blunt tease for the rest of the Justice League. She pops up, gets a few action scenes, but isn't integral to the narrative. She never had a chance to do anything more meaningful in that film.

Good point. Glad to see she can kill it with a good director. I did always like her in the F&F movies too even if she didn't have much to do.

Quoting this silly opinion because it's silly.

I actually agree more with you than him but I believe GAMEPROFF is part of the international market. Are you as well? You didn't answer when he asked what country you live in.

If true? Lmao, come on dude.

Just because you disagree with a consensus, doesn't mean that critics are softballing films. A shitload of people loved Rogue One, myself included.

Wait, I thought the positive reviews happened because Sony faked reviews and/or paid for them? /s

So wait, Marvel/Disney is paying reviewers to praise Wonder Woman? Interesting tactic...

It's a smart move. You call the reviewer pretending to be WB, you pay them, then they reveal it and WB gets all the dirt. We're witnessing 8d chess here. I guess Ike brought home some lessons from Trump.

If movies with female leads means they're going to get better reviews because of their gender according to that Fulge1973 conspiracy theory, then maybe we should just get more female leads for movies! :D

Win win!

So what? What does that have to do anything? Just because you love something doesn't make it good.

...What? It means that I think it's good, which is all there is. There's no objective good or bad in art, there's just consensus. I can turn that around and say: "Just because you don't like something doesn't make it bad."

Lol, yeah, I mean 1B is pretty out there. I do think the movie will end up doing better than a lot of people predicted, especially initially when people were low-balling it. I think it has a chance to hit Suicide Squad numbers.

I am from the US, but I don't really think that matters. Anecdotal evidence from one's home country doesn't trump all.
